............................................................................................................................. 112 2 JOE TORRE CHIEF BASEBALL OFFICER Hall of Famer Joe Torre is Major League Baseball’s Chief Baseball Officer, overseeing all baseball operations and reporting directly to Commissioner Robert D. Manfred, Jr. Since 2011, Torre has been the Office of the Commissioner’s primary liaison to the general managers and field managers of the 30 Major League Clubs and the Major League Umpires. Torre, a manager for 29 seasons, ranks fifth all-time with 2,326 managerial wins. He led the New York Yankees to four World Series Championships, six American League pennants and 12 Postseason appearances in his 12 years (1996-2007) as manager. The two-time A.L. Manager of the Year also led the New York Mets (1977-1981), the Atlanta Braves (1982-1984), the St. Louis Cardinals (1990-1995) and the Los Angeles Dodgers (2008-2010). Torre made his managerial debut with the Mets on May 31, 1977, becoming the first player-manager in the Majors since 1959. In 2013, he led Team USA in the World Baseball Classic. During his 18-year playing career with the Milwaukee/Atlanta Braves (1960-1968), the Cardinals (1969-1974) and the Mets (1975-1977), the nine-time All-Star compiled a .297 batting average, 2,342 hits and 252 home runs. He was the National League’s 1971 Most Valuable Player, batting .363 with 24 home runs and a league-leading 137 RBI. On December 9, 2013, the National Baseball Hall of Fame announced that its Expansion Era Committee had unanimously elected Torre to its Class of 2014. Torre was inducted into the Hall of Fame on July 27, 2014 in Cooperstown. Torre is the Chairman of the Joe Torre Safe At Home Foundation, which he and his wife, Ali, launched in 2002. The Safe At Home Foundation’s mission is to develop educational programs that will end the cycle of domestic violence and save lives. Since its inception, the Foundation has educated thousands of students, parents, teachers and school faculty about the devastating effects of domestic violence. Torre is the co-author of three books: The Yankee Years (Doubleday 2009); Joe Torre’s Ground Rules for Winners (Hyperion 1999); and Chasing the Dream (Bantam, 1997, 1998). Torre was born on July 18, 1940 in Brooklyn, New York. He, Ali and their daughter, Andrea, currently live in New York. His three adult children are Michael, Cristina and Lauren. In this capacity, one of Peter’s primary responsibilities is oversight of umpiring and the implemention of expanded instant replay. Prior to joining MLB, Woodfork spent five years as the Assistant General Manager of the Arizona Diamondbacks, where he also served as a Vice President in 2010. While in Arizona, Peter primarily focused on the D-backs’ 40-man roster management as well as contract negotiations, scouting and Minor League player development. He came to Arizona by way of the Boston Red Sox, where he served for three seasons (2003-05) as Director of Baseball Operations and Assistant Director

    Ticket stubs alone have little value Jeff Figler can be reached at [email protected]. He would be glad to give you his opinion on values of sports collectibles. BY JEFF FIGLER SPECIAL TO THE POST-DISPATCH 02/17/2010 Every so often I am asked if there is value to ticket stubs, or even unused full tickets. In short, the answer is no. The only instances in which ticket stubs or unused tickets are of value is if they are related to significant events, and only if they are auctioned with other related items. A ticket stub to, let's say a game in July 1962 has no value, except to the owner of the stub. (Maybe going to the game was a birthday gift.) However, a ticket stub to a game of historical significance, for example, Game 7 of the 1960 World Series between the New York Yankees and the Pittsburgh Pirates, would have some value. If you combine the ticket stub from that game, with a program from that game, newspaper clippings, and a team-signed ball of the 1960 Pirates, then you have a nice package, worth a minimum of $500. Of course, the value will depend on the condition of the items, especially of the baseball, and if there happened to be a bidding war on that lot. In case you might have forgotten, Game 7 of the 1960 World Series was the one in which statistically the Yankees dominated, but the Bucs won the Series on a walk-off homer by Bill Mazeroski. If someone has the entire unused ticket of a particular event, not merely the ticket stub, the value goes up a bit, but not dramatically.

Talking Cubs heads all top CSN Chicago producers need in riveting ‘Reign Men’ By George Castle, CBM Historian Posted Thursday, March 23, 2017 Some of the most riveting TV can be a bunch of talking heads. The best example is enjoying multiple airings on CSN Chicago, the first at 9:30 p.m. Monday, March 27. When a one-hour documentary combines Theo Epstein and his Merry Men of Wrigley Field, who can talk as good a game as they play, with the video skills of world-class producers Sarah Lauch and Ryan McGuffey, you have a must-watch production. We all know “what” happened in the Game 7 Cubs victory of the 2016 World Series that turned from potentially the most catastrophic loss in franchise history into its most memorable triumph in just a few minutes in Cleveland. Now, thanks to the sublime re- porting and editing skills of Lauch and McGuffey, we now have the “how” and “why” through the oral history contained in “Reign Men: The Story Behind Game 7 of the 2016 World Series.” Anyone with sense is tired of the endless shots of the 35-and-under bar crowd whooping it up for top sports events. The word here is gratuitous. “Reign Men” largely eschews those images and other “color” shots in favor of telling the story. And what a tale to tell. Lauch and McGuffey, who have a combined 20 sports Emmy Awards in hand for their labors, could have simply done a rehash of what many term the greatest Game 7 in World Series history.

Random baseball moments—not just epic coups like Bobby Thomson’s 1951 “miracle” home run—persist in memory long after they should have evanesced. Kevin Cook’s heartfelt and entertaining “Electric October” is ostensibly about the 1947 World Series between Joe DiMaggio’s Yankees and the Dodgers of Jackie Robinson, Pee Wee Reese and Dixie Walker. The book is really about the lost drama and culture of mid- 20th-century baseball still embedded in the minds of old-timers. Miles NBER Working Paper No. 17023 May 2011 JEL No. K23,K42 ABSTRACT In determining the legality of online poker – a multibillion dollar industry – courts have relied heavily on the issue of whether or not poker is a game of skill. Using newly available data, we analyze that question by examining the performance in the 2010 World Series of Poker of a group of poker players identified as being highly skilled prior to the start of the events. Those players identified a priori as being highly skilled achieved an average return on investment of over 30 percent, compared to a -15 percent for all other players.
