  • ADA Day Draft
Americans With Disabilities Act ADA DAY 7.26.21 What is ADA Day? History The ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) is a civil rights law for people with disabilities that was passed on July 26, 1990. The law prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities, assuring them of equality and equity of opportunity, full community participation, independent living, and economic self-sufficiency. In enacting the ADA, Congress recognized that physical and mental disabilities do not reduce a person’s right or ability to fully participate in all aspects of society, but that people with physical or mental disabilities are frequently excluded from doing so as a result of prejudice and inaccessibility. With the help of the ADA, 1 in 4 Americans with disabilities is able to participate in their communities and workplaces today. Every July 26th we celebrate the ADA, our fellow individuals with disabilities, and look ahead to the work that is still being done to make a more inclusive, accessible life for those with disabilities. Areas of assistance under the ADA Employment Transportation Public Accommodations President George Bush signing the ADA act on July 26, 1990 Communications and access to state and local government programs and services 01 Overview of Americans with Disabilities Act Title I of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA): Prohibits private and government employers, employment agencies, and worker’s unions from discriminating against qualified individuals with disabilities. This covered all termsof employment, including applications, hiring, firing, promotion, and job training. It is enforced by the U.S Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Those who believe they have been discriminated against on the basis of their disability can file a charge to the department citing disability discrimination.

  • Spy Wednesday Be Still Day 43
Be Still Day 43 Spy Wednesday BE STILL Take a moment to still yourself before Jesus. Take a few minutes to tell Him who He is. "Jesus you are ______________." Take another few moments to reflect on any good that has happened in the last 24 hours. Scripture tells us that every good and perfect gift comes from God (James 1:17). Thank Him for those things. What concerns are on your mind? How has the last 24 hours gone? Do you see ANY movement or change in the things you have prayed over the last week? If so, make note of it. Prayer Dear Lord, I know if Judas could have heard better, he may never have betrayed You. Give me ears to hear your voice so that I may always remain in the center of your will. Quiet the noise in my heart and mind so I can hear from you today. Guide me today as one who loves You and seeks to love like you. Amen. READ Matthew 26:14-16, John 13:18-30 FOCUS Focus Verse of the Day: John 13:26-27 – Jesus answered, “It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish.” Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. 27 As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him. APPLICATION & REFLECTION Wednesday of Holy Week has long been called “Spy Wednesday”. As the conspiracy against Jesus progresses, a traitor from within takes action.

Records and History Old Dominion University Baseball 2009 Old Dominion University Baseball 2009 27 BUD METHENY n Jan 2, 2003 Old Dominion University and the athletic program lost a legend with the passing of Bud MethenyO and his wife Fran on the same day. Bud spent 32 years at the University from 1948 to 1980 as an instructor, basketball coach, athletic director and coach of the baseball program. Baseball was his passion, and where he made his mark. As a member of the New York Yankees from 1937 to 1946, Bud played on the 1943 World Series championship squad that stopped St. Louis. Bud started for the Yankees in the second and last game of the series. As a coach of the Monarchs, he rolled up a 423‑363‑6 record and was honored by the NCAA as the Eastern Regional coach of the year in 1963 and ‘64 and National Coach Of the Year in 1964. His Monarchs won the NCAA College Division Eastern Regional championship in 1963 and 1964 and took second in 1965. Bud not only coached baseball, but he was the men’s basketball head coach from 1948‑1965, compiling a 198‑163 record and posting 16 winning seasons. He served as the University’s athletic director from 1963‑1970. Following his retirement it was only fitting to honor Bud with the naming of the new baseball stadium in 1983 and with the adoption of the blue and white pin stripes of the Yankees on uniforms the following year, which coincides with the University’s new school colors, adopted in 1986.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL WEEKLY NOTES FRIDAY, JULY 28, 2017 BLACKMON WORKING TOWARD HISTORIC SEASON On Sunday afternoon against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Coors Field, Colorado Rockies All-Star outfi elder Charlie Blackmon went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and his 24th home run of the season. With the round-tripper, Blackmon recorded his 57th extra-base hit on the season, which include 20 doubles, 13 triples and his aforementioned 24 home runs. Pacing the Majors in triples, Blackmon trails only his teammate, All-Star Nolan Arenado for the most extra-base hits (60) in the Majors. Blackmon is looking to become the fi rst Major League player to log at least 20 doubles, 20 triples and 20 home runs in a single season since Curtis Granderson (38-23-23) and Jimmy Rollins (38-20-30) both accomplished the feat during the 2007 season. Since 1901, there have only been seven 20-20-20 players, including Granderson, Rollins, Hall of Famers George Brett (1979) and Willie Mays (1957), Jeff Heath (1941), Hall of Famer Jim Bottomley (1928) and Frank Schulte, who did so during his MVP-winning 1911 season. Charlie would become the fi rst Rockies player in franchise history to post such a season. If the season were to end today, Blackmon’s extra-base hit line (20-13-24) has only been replicated by 34 diff erent players in MLB history with Rollins’ 2007 season being the most recent. It is the fi rst stat line of its kind in Rockies franchise history. Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig is the only player in history to post such a line in four seasons (1927-28, 30-31).

  • Oral History Interview with ARTHUR B. METHENY Norfolk, Virginia May 29, 1975 by James R
Oral History Interview with ARTHUR B. METHENY Norfolk, Virginia May 29, 1975 by James R. Sweeney, Old Dominion University Sweeney: Today we’re continuing the interview with Mr. Arthur B. "Bud" Metheny, for many years the baseball coach and former chairman of the department of health and physical education at Old Dominion University. Starting with question 111 here, by 1964 you seemed in public statements to see a change for the better coming in the college’s athletic policy as plans were being formulated for a new physical education building with a 10,000 seat gymnasium. You also indicated a possible change in the school’s "no athletic scholarships" policy. I wonder why such changes came about in the administration’s attitude? Metheny: Well, in 1960 I wrote the first letter investigating the possibility of having our new building. And it took us 10 years to get it. We got in it in 1970. And we were doing well in baseball, and the students wanted to move up in the grading of the entire program. That was their request, and in the editorials in the newspaper and things of that type. And so we started investigating the possibility of moving up in athletics, which we did in getting into the Mason— Dixon. And with the demand of the newspapers and the public we thought that we were about ready to move up in the field of athletics. So we started making our preparations for that. And we knew that if we did move up and to be able to compete on an equal basis that we’d have to give athletic scholarships.
