MAKING MEANING OUT OF MOUNTAINS: SKIING, THE ENVIRONMENT AND ECO-POLITICS by MARK CHRISTOPHER JOHN STODDART M.A., University of Victoria, 2004 B.A., Athabasca University, 2002 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY in THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES (Sociology) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) June 2008 © Mark Christopher John Stoddart 2008 ii Abstract This research provides a sociological analysis of skiing as a form of outdoor recreation and nature tourism in British Columbia, Canada. A qualitative multi-method approach is used, combining discourse analysis, interviews with skiers, and unobtrusive field observation at Whistler Blackcomb and Whitewater ski resorts. Through a focus on discourse, embodied interactions among humans and non-humans, and flows of power, this research describes an environmental ambiguity at the centre of skiing. There is a tension between interpretations of skiing as an environmentally-sustainable practice and notions of skiing as an environmental and social problem. Skiing is based on the symbolic consumption of nature and is understood by many participants as a way of entering into a meaningful relationship with the non-human environment. However, interpretations of skiing as a non-consumptive use of non-human nature are too simple. Social movement groups disrupt pro-environmental discourses of skiing by challenging the sport’s ecological and social legitimacy. Many skiers also articulate a self- reflexive environmental critique of their sport. In these instances, skiing is brought into the realm of politics. Recreational forms of interaction with the non-human environment tend to be at the periphery of environmental sociology.

Select location Search Sign In | Register News A&E Biz Tech Money Cars Style Health Travel Nightlife Pride Calendar Entertainment » Celebrities Cruising Toward An End to HIV/AIDS by Winnie McCroy EDGE Editor Monday Aug 22, 2016 PRINT EMAIL COMMENTS (0) From September 15 to September 18, more than 250 cyclists and 50 crew members will trek 275 miles from Boston to New York in the 22nd Annual Cycle for the Cause. The ride raises money for the HIV and AIDS programs at New York City's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center. Last year's event raised more than $800,000. "This year, we have an ambitious goal to break the million- dollar mark," said Center Executive Director Glennda Testone. "That will allow us to do even more for our community." Riders are asked to raise $2,750 ($2,000 for those under 30), and crew members are asked to raise $500. All hotels, meals, massages, bike tech and medical attention are covered. Funds raised will be used to fund 96,000 rapid HIV tests to prevent more than 78,400 HIV transmissions as well as thousands of safer sex kits, train youth as leaders in the fight against HIV and AIDS, and care for more than 104,000 people living with HIV. When people are in treatment for HIV, they are less likely to spread new infections. The Center also provides 1,800 counseling and group sessions for people living with HIV and AIDS.

LAURIE MERCIER, Ph.D., Chair ROBERT BAUMAN, Ph.D. JEFFREY SANDERS, Ph.D. LUZ MARIA GORDILLO, Ph.D. ii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This dissertation has been many years in the making. It all began in 2004 at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Washington. Chandra Manning, Gina Hames, Carlton Benson, and Beth Kraig instilled in me a desire to pursue history as a profession. I completed a second major in history during the course of one academic year, and I do not believe I could have done it that quickly without the encouragement of Chuck Nelson and David Gerry at the Office of International Student Services. Important during my time at PLU was also the support of Helen Rogers, a close friend and an experienced history major. While my interest in Norwegian Americans’ relationship with Norway and Norwegian culture began during my time at PLU, it was during my years pursuing a Master’s degree at Montana State University in Bozeman that this project began to take shape.

CULTURE, LANDSCAPE, AND THE MAKING OF THE COLORADO SKI INDUSTRY by ANNE GILBERT COLEMAN B.A., Williams College, 1987 M.A., University of Colorado, 1992 A thesis submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of the University of Colorado in partial fulfillment of the requirement for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of History 1996 This thesis for the Doctor of Philosophy degree by Anne Gilbert Coleman has been approved for the Department of History by Patricia Nelson Limerick Philip J. Deloria Date ACKNOWLEDGMENTS When people hear the topic of my dissertation, they often give me a knowing smile and ask if I am a skier. I say "I was a skier in my life before graduate school, when I had more time and a paycheck." This project has allowed me to explore Colorado's ski areas from the inside out, through their history, design, and marketing as well as their lifts, lodges, and trails. In the process I have met dozens of interesting people and incurred a number of debts. This project received financial support from the American Historical Association's Albert J. Beveridge Research Grant, the University of Colorado History Department's Douglas A. Bean Memorial Faculty Research Stipend and Pile Fellowship, the Roaring Fork Research Scholarship funded by Ruth Whyte, and from Dr. Giles D. Toll. I would like to thank all the people who helped me research this project, including Charlie Langdon at the Durango Herald, Mary Walker and Ingrid Schierllng Burnett at the Tread of Pioneers Museum, Sue Spearing at the Grand County Historical Society, all of the people at the University of Colorado Archives and the Colorado Historical Society, and Lisa Hancock, Jody Phillips McCabe, and my other friends at the Aspen Historical Society.

Page 1 of 41 An Annotated Bibliography of Books, DVDs, and Internet Resources on Gays, Lesbians, Bisexuals, and Transgender People in Sports Compiled by Walt “Cat” Walker. Approved by the GLBTRT Resources Committee. Last revised February 15, 2016. TABLE OF CONTENTS Introduction 2 I. General Nonfiction 3 II. Memoirs & Biographies 7 III. Romance Fiction 11 IV. General Fiction 18 V. Drama 23 VI. Graphic Novel 23 VII. Children & Teens 24 VIII. DVDs 27 IX. Internet Resources 31 Index 39 Page 2 of 41 Introduction Sports has not been a traditional subject area associated with gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgender people (although there has been some recognition of the presence of lesbians in women’s sports). Homophobia can often be found there, and sometimes GLBT people do not feel comfortable participating in sports openly. In recent years, the visibility of GLBT people in the sports world has greatly increased, and several prominent athletes have come out as gay, lesbian, or transgender. There has been an accompanying increase in books and films that illustrate these changes, both in fiction and nonfiction. This bibliography includes resources about gay men, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgender persons involved in many different sports. The books have all been published in print, and many of them may also be found as e-books. Separate sections contain memoirs, novels, plays, a graphic novel, and children’s and teen books. Lots of sports-themed gay and lesbian romance novels have been published, so they also have a separate section. Several LGBT sports-related DVDs and websites are also listed, including a large number of transgender-related resources.

Mr. Mid-Atlantic Leather Weekend 2018 Mr. MAL 2018 Contest Judges Martel Brown Mr. Mid-Atlantic Leather 2017 Continuing the Pittsburgh legacy, Martel became the 5th Mr. Pittsburgh Leather Fetish to win the title of Mr. Mid-Atlantic Leather. As a proud member of The Three Rivers Leather Club he has made it his mission to bridge the gap between the sometimes-distant subcultures within the gay community. In this way, he embraces his individuality in such a way that others are encouraged to find their own truth in their kinkster identities. Leading by example, your reigning Mr. Mid-Atlantic Leather has called out to the leather community to recognize how their umbrella extends to all marginalized kinksters that we all belong under an umbrella of leather and fetish as a community of sex-positive persons that embrace diversity while building a mosaic of micro communities within it that honor our differences, yet recognize our best traditions. Once you see his smile, you'll feel the weight of his sincerity and his promise to break down stereotypes, breakthrough barriers of prejudice, and to support the mentoring and creation of tomorrow's kinkster leaders that follow in all our courageous past leader's footsteps. Ralph Bruneau International Mr. Leather 2017 Ralph Bruneau competed at IML as Mr. GNI Leather 2016 representing Gay Naturists International, the largest naturist organization in the world. He began his leather journey in 1974 at the legendary Mineshaft in NYC.
