REACH CHARITY DINNER 2019 Blooms for Hope 25 OCTOBER 2019, FRIDAY 6.30pm - 10.00pm THE FULLERTON HOTEL SINGAPORE GUEST OF HONOUR - MISS SIM ANN Senior Minister Of State, Ministry Of Communications And Information & Ministry Of Culture, Community And Youth Sponsorship package starts from $3,500 For reservations, please contact Mr Alvin Teo at [email protected] More Details HERE Organised by Dear Friends of REACH Community Services, Last year, REACH Community Services Society celebrated our significant milestone; that of 20 years of serving the Community. The official opening of the 5th and 6th community touchpoints this year; Senior Centre @ Bukit Gombak Vista and Family Service Centre @ Sin Ming further stretched our footprint and impact in the Community. Journeying with more vulnerable individuals, youths, families and seniors to better their lives requires more funding and resources to sustain operations. With prevailing increase in global trade tensions and economic uncertainties, increasing numbers of Professionals, Managers, Executives and Technicians (PMETs) in Singapore are affected and their vulnerabilities rising. According to the latest statistics released by the Ministry of Manpower (MOM), close to 70% of retrenched residents in the first quarter of 2019 were PMETs.* As they occupy a higher share of the workforce, this group is bearing the brunt of such job losses as the employment outlook worsens. Unfortunately statistics also showed that it takes an average of 6-month for a PMET aged 30 and above to be re-employed. With young families to support, the prolong unemployment takes its toll on such families as a whole, not only financially but mentally and emotionally as well, snowballing into many other potential issues such as marital discord, absenteeism from schools and parent-child tensions. In a recent debate, it was mentioned that to maintain a basic standard of living, a single person aged 65 and above would need at least S$1,379 a month to get by.** This covers expenses for simple social activities like meals with friends and perhaps modest short vacation trips to nearby countries like Malaysia. However, the report also shown that only 60 per cent of active CPF members who turned 55 in 2017, have met the CPF basic retirement sum of about S$700 monthly payout, which barely sustains. This suggests that many of our retirees are having difficulties maintaining a very basic standard of living after they retire. As a result, a large number of seniors become prone to social isolation due to financial lack. This also means the number of seniors at risk of depression and suicidal will only increase. Keeping track of the vulnerable population on the ground through such uncertain times has become ever more important, henceforth, we need to do more on the ground; may it be Family Service, Counselling Service, Youth Service or Senior Service. As many of our programmes are not funded, we need to raise funds annually to make these possible. We therefore hope to raise $300,000 through our REACH Charity Dinner 2019 to sustain and expand our services through our 6 community touchpoints. The theme for our REACH Charity Dinner 2019 is “Blooms for Hope” which symbolizes sustainment and life through adversity, and emergence with victory into better outcomes; like a sturdy tree sprouting fresh flowers in the new season. It will be held on Friday 25 October 2019 at The Fullerton Hotel Singapore. We are honoured to have Ms Sim Ann, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Communications and Information & Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth as the Guest-of-Honour. Proceeds from sales of dinner tables, sponsorships and direct donations are eligible to 250% taxable income offset against the donated sum. Your support will help us to continue providing and building resilience amongst the Least, the Lost and the Lonely in our community. We look forward to partnering with you in this meaningful journey. Yours Sincerely, Ho Siew Cheong Chief Executive REACH Community Services Society *Bulk of retrenched residents in Q1 are PMETs https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/manpower/bulk-of-retrenched-residents- in-q1-are-pmets **$1,379 a month for retirement in S'pore: Too much or too little? https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/able-to-survive-or- thrive *About Lee Kow Fong aka Ah Guo www.leekowfong.com Lee Kow Fong, or Ah Guo, graduated with a BA(Hons) in Chinese Studies from National University of Singapore and holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Translation and Interpretation from Nanyang Technological University.
