Terrestrial snail fauna in the Some§/Szamos' River Valley from the spring region to the inflow into the river Tisza Károly Bába and Andrei Sárkány-Kiss Abstract The sampling sites included montane and lowland riparian plant communities of early or advanced successional stages as well as forests of hilly region, which often extend.to riverbanks. The plant communities differ from each other by the composition of their snail assemblages, as it is proved by the results of cluster and principal component analyses. It was concluded, that ubiquitous and continental species {Bradybaena, Deroceras rodnae, Succinea putris, Helix lutescens) dominate among snails transported by the Somej/Szanios over long distances. Species of narrow ecological tolerance range can be found in the riparian vegetation of the Somej/Szamos Valley and also of minor watercourses arriving from neighbouring hills and mountains. The fauna dispersal from the spring region is hampered by water reservoirs, shrinkage of forest habitats to single row of trees along the river and the lack of riparian gallery forests in the flood area. The biotopes are subjected to the strongest human impact resulted from the forest management, or logging the flood plain into agricultural fields. The garbage disposal in/or near the riparian vegetation also cause major disturbances for the snail assemblages. Keywords: Gastropoda, human impact, Some$/Szamos River Valley Introduction A scientific expedition was organised in the valley of river Some$/Szamos between 1-18. 06. 1992 with the aim of assessing the current biotic status of the river. During the field investigations special attention was paid to the influence of human activities on the microflora and invertebrate fauna of the river, and on its natural self-purification. -

LES NOMS SCIENTIFIQUES FRANÇAIS DES MOLLUSQUES CONTINENTAUX DE FRANCE : processus d’ÉtABLISSEMENT d’une LISTE DE RÉFÉRENCE Benoît FONTAINE 1, Jean-Michel BICHAIN 2, Xavier CUCHERAT 3, Olivier GAR G OMINY 4 & Vincent PRIÉ 5 SUMMARY. — French scientific names of continental molluscs of France: process for establishing a list of reference. — In the biodiversity crisis context and with the increasing general awareness on this issue, conservation of small and poorly-known species is hampered by the fact they only have latine names. In order to communicate for biodiversity conservation, having French names is an advantage which is lacking in terrestrial and freshwater molluscs from France. To remedy this problem, we propose a list of French scientific names for this group, i.e. all species and subspecies known from France. We have listed existing names in legal documents, in usage and in the 18th and 19th centuries scientific literature. The resulting list being incomplete, we had to create new French names, following a series of recommendations adapted from similar works dealing with other taxonomic groups. We conclude by dealing with the issue of the legitimacy and validity of such names. The list of French scientific names is given as an appendix and is downloadable from internet. RÉSUMÉ. — Dans le contexte de la crise de la biodiversité et de la prise de conscience par le grand public des enjeux environnementaux, la conservation des espèces petites et méconnues est handicapée par le fait que ces espèces ne peuvent être désignées que par leur nom latin. Dans une optique de communication pour la préservation de la biodiversité, disposer de nom français est un atout qui fait défaut pour les mol- lusques terrestres et d’eau douce de France. -

ABSTRACT The metacommunity framework integrates species-specific responses to environmental gradients to detect emergent patterns of mesoscale organization. Abiotic char- acteristics (temperature, precipitation) and associated vegetation types change with elevation in a predictable fashion, providing opportunities to decouple effects of environmental gradients per se from those of biogeographical or historical origin. Moreover, expected structure is different if a metacommunity along an elevational gradient is molded by idiosyncratic responses to abiotic variables (expectation = Gleasonian structure) than if such a metacommunity is molded by strong habitat preferences or specializations (expectation = Clementsian structure). We evaluated metacommunity structure for 13 species of gastropod from 15 sites along an ele- vational transect in the Luquillo Experimental Forest of Puerto Rico. Analyses were conducted separately for the primary axis and for the secondary axis of corre- spondence extracted via reciprocal averaging. The metacommunity exhibited quasi-Clementsian structure along the primary axis, which represented a gradient of gastropod species specialization that was unassociated with elevation. -
