chapter 3 National Lineage Reinvented In the early 1940s, Nishikawa shifted his attention to Taiwanese history. From “The Red Fort” (Sekikanki 赤嵌記), which focused on the shifting fortunes of the family of Zheng Chenggong (郑成功 1624–1662), to Tale of the Dragon’s Pulse (Ryūmyaku ki 竜脈記) in which Nishikawa describes the difficulties that Liu Mingchuan (刘铭传 1836–1896), the first governor of the province of Taiwan, encountered during the Qing dynasty when he undertook the build- ing of a railway, to his Railway across Taiwan (Taiwan jūkan tetsudō 台湾縦貫 鉄道), which describes Japan’s railway construction after the colonists occu- pied Taiwan, Nishikawa’s works mainly took the form of novels about historical events in Taiwan.1 According to his biography, in 1941, entrusted by the colonial government, Nishikawa even started writing a new story exclusively on Zheng Chenggong.2 Why did history become important to him at this juncture, and to what extent was his identity further revealed in this shift in literary emphasis? Answers to these questions can be gained through a reading of “The Red Fort”, which is Nishikawa’s first attempt to explore Taiwanese history and colonial realities, and at the same time, his foray into historical fiction created to serve the real political propaganda of Japanese imperialism in the 1940s. “The Red Fort” was the author’s attempt to justify Japan’s colonisation of Taiwan and its further incursion into Southeast Asia. It demonstrated how local history was re-imagined as a part of Japanese history and how local history helped Nishikawa identify with the Japanese empire. -

By the time the British crushed the Chinese navy in the so-called Opium Wars, the country and its government were in a state of shock and incapable of quickly catching-up with Western Europe. In contrast with such a narrative, this dissertation shows that the Great Qing was in fact far more aware of global trends than has been commonly assumed. Against the backdrop of the long eighteenth century, the author explores the fundamental historical notions of the Chinese maritime world as a conceptual divide between an inner and an outer sea, whereby administrators, merchants, and intellectuals paid close and intense attention to coastal seawaters. Drawing on archival sources from China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, and the West, the author argues that the connection between the Great Qing and the maritime world was complex and sophisticated. -

The First Episode of Formosa Church: Robertus Junius (1629-1643) The First Episode of Formosa Church: Robertus Junius (1629-1643) Lin Changhua(林昌華) 荷蘭阿姆斯特丹自由大學 神學研究所哲學博士 本院歷史學教授 摘要 尤羅伯牧師(1629-1643)為荷蘭改革宗教會派駐台灣宣教師當中,成果最為豐碩 的一位。他在 1606 年誕生於充滿自由和寬容思想的鹿特丹市,在 19 歲時進入萊登大 學當中,專門為培養服事於東印度地區的「印度學院」(Seminarium Indicum)就讀畢 業之後經由鹿特丹中會派遣,前往東印度地區服事,他在 1629 年來到福爾摩沙。在 1643 年時約滿回歸祖國。歸國後在台夫特(Delft)教會服事一段時間,後來前往阿姆 斯特丹教會,他在該城設立一間專門訓練前往東印度神職人員的訓練學校。在台灣 14 年的服事期間,建立教會,為 5400 人洗禮,並且設立學校教導原住民孩童,也設立 一間「師資訓練班」栽培 50 名原住民作為小學校的師資。荷蘭人來到台灣以前,西 拉雅原住民有強制墮胎的習俗,這樣的風俗可能是千百年來流傳下來的風俗,原住民 本身不以為意。但是,對宣教師來講,殺害無辜嬰孩的行為是干犯《十誡》的嚴重罪 行,不是歸咎於風俗習慣就可以視而不見。於是尤羅伯牧師認為要解決這個問題,必 須雙管齊下,首先是透過行政的力量阻止西拉雅的女祭司繼續進行殺嬰的行為,再來 透過教育的方法,編撰相關的教理問答,讓原住民改掉這個風俗習慣,而他所編撰的 教理問答也可以算是荷蘭教會「脈絡化神學」(contextual theology)在台灣的實現。由 131 玉山神學院學報第二十四期 Yu-Shan Theological Journal No.24 於在台灣的宣教成果極為卓著,因此在 1650 年代的英國有人撰寫一本小書讚揚他為 5900 人洗禮的偉大成果,而台灣的宣教也成為荷蘭改革宗教會在東印度地區宣教的模 範。 Keywords: Dutch East India Company, catechisms, contextualization, Zeelandia 132 The First Episode of Formosa Church: Robertus Junius (1629-1643) In 1624, Dutch East India Company1 established a colony in Formosa, at the same time Christian clergymen start their service in the island thus mark the genesis of Formosan church. During East India Company’s administration in the island from 1624 till 1662, more than 30 ministers came to served there. Amongst them, the greatest missionary of Dutch Reformed Church was Rev. Robertus Junius. He was not the first minister served in Formosa, however due to missionary zeal as well as linguistic talent, he was able to baptized 5400 native inhabitants, established schools for Formosan children and youth during his 14 years of service in Formosa. Beside these establishments, Junius also compiled several contextualized versions of Formosan catechisms to teach native Christian, and his method can be defined as the first contextualization endeavor in Taiwan church history, a significant step for Taiwan theological reflection. -

A general at the end of the Chinese Ming Dynasty, he was a prominent leader of the movement opposing the Manchu Qing Dynasty, and in recovering Taiwan from Dutch colonial occupation in 1661. Honored as a hero in Japan, China, and Taiwan, he has been dramatized in many plays in various theatre forms in Japan (since about 1700), China (since 1906), and Taiwan (since the 1920s). -

Church and State in Dutch Formosa Joel S. Fetzer J. Chrisopher Soper Social Science Division Pepperdine University Malibu, CA 90263-4372 [email protected] [email protected] ABSTRACT: This paper examines the politics of church-state interactions in Dutch Formosa. How did Dutch Christians and local indigenous converts relate to the colonial government in Taiwan during the Dutch era (1624–1662)? Did Protestant missionaries and their followers play a mainly priestly or prophetic role when dealing with the Dutch East India Company and its representatives in Taiwan? Did Dutch authorities adopt a laissez-faire attitude to native and foreign Christians' religious practices, or did they actively support the missionary effort in Formosa? This essay tests Anthony Gill’s political-economic model of church-state interaction by analyzing published collections of primary Dutch-language and translated documents on this topic and by examining related secondary works. The study concludes that although a few missionaries tried to soften the edges of colonial dominance of Taiwanese aborigines, most clerics enthusiastically participated in the Netherlands' brutal suppression of indigenous culture and even some aboriginal groups. The government, meanwhile, appears to have endorsed missionary activities on the assumption that conversion would "civilize the natives," who would in turn embrace Dutch colonization. In its relatively brief period of colonial control over Formosa (1624-1662), the Dutch state established a remarkably vigorous administrative apparatus that attempted to gain profit from the island’s abundant natural resources and to convert and Christianize the natives. Under the auspices of the Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie (VOC), or Dutch East India Company, a highly complex administrative structure developed that included Calvinist missionaries and political leaders on the island, colonial authorities in the company’s Asian headquarters in Batavia, and a board of directors in the Netherlands. -

CAST COINAGE OF THE MING REBELS John E. Sandrock Collecting China's ancient coins can be a very worthwhile and rewarding experience. While at first glance this endeavor may appear overwhelming to the average Westerner, it is in reality not difficult once you master a few guidelines and get the hang of it. Essential to a good foundation of knowledge is a clear understanding of the chronology of dynasties, the evolution of the cash coin from ancient to modern times, the Chinese system of dating, the Nien Hao which identifies the coin to emperor and thus to dynasty, and the various forms of writing (calligraphy) used to form the standard characters. Once this basic framework is mastered, almost all Chinese coins fall into one dynastic category or another, facilitating identification and collection. Some do not, however, which brings us to the subject at hand. The coins of the Ming Rebels defy this pattern, as they fall between two dynasties, overlapping both. Thus they do not fit nicely into one category or another and consequently must be treated separately. To put this into historical perspective it is necessary to know that the Ming dynasty lasted from 1368 to the year 1644 and that its successor, the Ch'ing dynasty, existed from 1644 to its overthrow in 1911. Therefore our focus is on the final days of the Ming and beginning of the Ch'ing dynasties. The Ming era was a period of remarkable accomplishment. This was a period when the arts and craftsmanship flourished. Administration and learning soared to new heights. -

Part 6: The Manchus and the Qing 23: The Qing Vision of Empire Professor Mark Elliot taught most of this section, allowing us to benefit from his personal focus on the Qing and the Manchus. Professor Bol stepped in for one week to teach The Scholars and Prosperous Suzhou, which must have been his special interest. It was one of the most fascinating weeks of the course129 and by far the toughest. Historical Overview The origins of the Qing dynasty date back to the 1630s with a peasant rebellion led by Li Zicheng, a former postal official. Indeed, this may be the first recorded instance of an individual 'going postal.' 130 Li's rebellion spread through central China, drawing upon the anger of farmers, clerks, and soldiers who were devastated by, among other things, the inflation of copper currency against the silver required for tax payments.131 By the 1640s, the rebel army was moving toward Beijing. Meanwhile, the Manchus, descendents of the Jurchens of the Jin dynasty, were uniting tribal groups northeast of China, forging alliances with the eastern Mongols and raiding the Ming, all under the leadership of Nurhaci. By the late 1620s, the Ming had lost control of the northeast. Hong Taiji, Nurhaci's son and successor, re-organized and strengthened the Jin state, and in the 1630s conquered Korea, bolstering Manchu security and prestige. In 1636, Hong renamed his dynasty the Great Qing (da qing). In 1644, Li's rebels captured Beijing, leading the Ming emperor to hang himself. Shortly after that, the Ming general Wu Sangui, who was guarding the Great Wall at the Shanhai Pass, allied with the Manchus against Li Zicheng, deciding that he preferred the organized armies of the Manchus to the pillaging forces of the rebellion.
