MEETING NOTICE The General Meeting will be held PREZ SAYS ! Wed., Feb. 8, 2017 at 7:00 PM As this is my first “Prez Says”, I thought I’d tell you a little about myself and how I, a self proclaimed "not a fish at the Somersworth High School guy", ended up here, President of the New Hampshire in Somersworth, N.H. Aquarium Society! Next BOD Meeting Up until I met my wonderful wife, I had never kept fish. Had a few cats will be held on growing up and that was about it. Then I met Jennifer. She didn’t have Monday, Feb. 20, 2017 any tanks, but she had spent portions of her childhood traveling with her at 7pm parents to the Caribbean, where she fell in love with snorkeling and all at Jennifer & Keith Richardson’s home the beautiful marine fish! Well, once we moved in to our first apartment together, one of the very first things that we did was buy a 55 gal. hex tank. We started with freshwater, something simple and basic, and it was FEBRUARY MEETING good. I enjoyed looking at the fish and she did a wonderful job keeping Wednesday, everything alive. February 8, 2017 Then we bought a house. This, of course, opened up all sorts of possibilities. We started with the same 55, but very soon, we decided to try salt water. So we did a lot of research and invested in a 90 gal. tank VIDEO & PIZZA with built-in overflows. (At this point in time, I should mention while I enjoy looking at the fish and corals and plants, I’m not “a fish guy”). I do NIGHT! enjoy creating things… so when we decided to go salt, I was very excited. bowl show • photo show Jennifer told me what she wanted to do and I got to get creative! We decided to put all the pumps, sump, calcium reactor, skimmer, etc. down auction in the basement and gravity feed everything... From there, it just kind of... refreshments and raffle prizes expanded. We went from a 90 gal. to a 180 gal. to a 270 gal... in the Everyone is looking forward kitchen. A 92 and a 30 in the office... and a third of the basement a devoted to seeing you there! fish room, with whole room air system and a whole house water change set-up. Jennifer is in her fish and plant glory and I've been able to use my "creative juices" to engineer what she wants! Everyone's happy! TELEPHONE DIRECTORY Along the way, we joined the NHAS and after serving a few terms Denise Brown...... (603) 436-0788 on the board, I ran for Vice President. After a few terms as VP, and just a small amount of nudging, I am now here, proudly serving as Faxline to Editor.....(603) 431-5714 your President! I look forward to chatting with you at upcoming meetings! Bring a picture for the photo show! Bring an entry for the bowl show! Bring a friend! — Keith Richardson, NHAS President BRING IN YOUR AQUARIUM VIDEOS!

The January board of directors meeting was held at the home of Jennifer and Keith Richardson on January 16th, 2017. After admiring Jennifer’s beautiful tanks and savoring a very good apple crisp president Keith Richardson called the meeting to order around 7:10 PM. In attendance were Martha Bonney, Larry Feltz, New Hampshire Jennifer Richardson, Keith Richardson, Chuck Smith, Bob Tyrrell, Don Van Pelt, Aquarium Society Ed Wasiewski and Anita Weidnecht. The only bill was for the club PO box. A motion was made and seconded to reimburse Jennifer $58 for the PO box. The motion passed. There was a discussion about paying some bills without having the approval of the board. There was a concern that the wait time between a member paying a bill and receiving reimbursement might create a hardship. It was felt that further discussion was needed and no action was taken. There was a brief follow up discussion concerning the annual banquet and the general feeling was that it was one of the better banquets in recent years. Don reported that he sent a thank you letter to the owner, Dante D’Antillo, which included praise for the servers who did such a nice job. h Most committee reports had nothing to report since there had been no activity since the last board meeting. Keith reported that the photo contest is ready Welcome to go digital in March. To submit a photo go to the NHAS web page, click on New Members ‘contacts’ and send the photo using the presidents contact email. To be eligible all photos must be sent by noon on the Sunday immediately preceding the monthly Wednesday meeting. It was decided that a group would go to Central Mass Aquatics on January Lynne and 28th to purchase a variety of fish to be held in quarantine until the annual auction Stephen in March. Also there will be a trip to Taunton, Massachusetts in late February to Ken’s fish to purchase supplies and possibly pick up donations from Ken. Spofford The February meeting is going to be a member video night and the club is going to provide pizza so bring your videos and your appetite. Don offered to complete and submit the paper work, provided by Larry Feltz, to reinstate the New Hampshire nonprofit status of the club, which lapsed a few years ago. The next BOD meeting will be on Monday February 20, 2017 at the home of Jennifer and Keith Richardson in Somersworth, NH. Congrats to The meeting adjourned around 8:45. PM. Raffle — Respectfully submitted by Don Van Pelt, Sec. NHAS Winners! 5/29/16 11:04 PM Page 1

A. E. The Confusing family - In particular the Ancistrus by Martha Bonney s c i t

e of LDA, and scientific name. For an example, k i Baryancistrus sp. L142 or LDA33. M

m Right! Perfectly clear. o r f

e r What started me on this is the L-144. L144 , originally u t c

i was one male fish that came from Paraguay. He was P bred with females imported at the same time, and then Kingdom: Animalia crossed back to their own siblings to lock the genetic Phylum: Chordata defect that causes the yellow color. Actually they were Class: a bit dusty looking. h s

Order: Siluriformes i F Family: Loricariidae t a C

Subfamily: t e

Genus: Ancistrus n a l P

The name Ancistrus is derived from the Greek m o r f word agkistron, meaning hook, in reference to the e r interopercular odontodes that are hooked. u t c i P Mature males and sometimes females have soft tentacles (bushy fleshy growths) on the snout, unique to the genus Ancistrus. All true L144 specimens are offspring from this single male. If the L-144 came from a single imported L144 , The Loricariidae family uses a L-number system to then aren’t all offspring not true L144s? Won’t they all help new identify species. The first L-number was be hybrids? Anyway, supposedly these fish died out in published in 1988. The L-Numbers where never the late 1990s. The current option of people that follow intended to be a permanent form of identification this sort of thing is the fish that is now sold as L144 is but to keep genetic lines "clean", to prevent hybrids probably from the Ancistrus cf. cirrhosus. {I forgot to of what may be a rare species. When the fish is add that "cf" (looking like) is also used.} given a scientific name the L-classification is dropped. Now to make things confusing... The “L144" currently isn't being lumped with Ancistrus cf_cirrhosus as it cannot be proven that Loricariidae were sometimes described as being they are the same. in more than one species and given another L-Number, resulting in species such as L004 be Well, whatever they are, they’re beautiful. I can’t also known as L005, L028 and L073. Then just to imagine a tank without a Bristlenose in it. muddy the waters more, some L-Numbers were reused on a new unidentified species. An added, touch to the L-Number system are suffixes a, b, c added for regional variations in species. Talk about confusing.

The German magazine “Das Aquarium” (stopped in 2005) used another identification system, "LDA" standing for Loricariidae Das Aquarium, this was This is one of my males R e f r e s h m L i e b n r t a s r . . i . a . P . n . . r . . . o . a . . . g . . . . n r . . . . a . . . . m d . . . . A . .
