Earlham College Baccalaureate Address May 9, 2009 Chuck’s Top Ten Secrets to a Long, Happy, Useful, Productive and Meaningful Life Chuck Yates Professor of History Thank you Phoebe. Thank you Sarah. Thanks to all of you. And now for something completely different.1 I’m not Malcolm Reynolds, but I do aim to misbehave.2 ‘Scuse me while I whip this out.3 Look at you guys. You made it. Omedeto, felicidades, gongxi, mazeltov, and mabrouk. Give yourselves a big Earlham College yee ha. This is the real deal. That’s right — it’s count to four and out the door for you guys. It’s been a bit more than that for me, but these have been four of the best years of my life, because of the time I got to spend in classrooms with you. I’ve seen thousands of others pass through here, but there’s never been a class quite like you before. Check it out: you’ve never graduated from Earlham before. Right? And I’ve never spoken at baccalaureate before. But today, 22 years after teaching my first courses at Earlham, I get to be your baccalaureate speaker. I think that makes this my commencement too, so I want you to know how proud I am that you chose me to do this for you. And I also want to say thanks to all of you for what I’ve learned from you while you were here. You can’t beat a deal like that. Two hundred and fifty of you and just one of me. -

ENGLISH 2810: Television as Literature (v. 1.0) 9:00 – 10:15 T/Th | EH 229 Dr. Scott Rogers | [email protected] | EH 448 http://faculty.weber.edu/srogers The Course The average American watches about 5 hours of television a day. We are told that this is bad. We are told that television is bad for us, that it is bad for our families, and that it is wasting our time. But not all television is that way. Some television shows have what we might call “literary pretensions.” Shows such as Twin Peaks, Homicide: Life on the Street, The Wire, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly, Veronica Mars, Battlestar Galactica, and LOST have been both critically acclaimed and the subject of much academic study. In this course, we shall examine a select few of these shows, watching complete seasons as if they were self-contained literary texts. In other words, in this course, you will watch TV and get credit for it. You will also learn to view television in an active and critical fashion, paying attention to the standard literary techniques (e.g. character, theme, symbol, plot) as well as televisual issues such as lighting, music, and camerawork. Texts Students will be expected to own, or have access to, the following: Firefly ($18 on amazon.com; free on hulu.com) and Serenity ($4 used on amazon.com) LOST season one ($25 on amazon.com; free on hulu.com or abc.com) Battlestar Galactica season one ($30 on amazon.com) It is in your best interest to buy or borrow these, if only to make it easier for you to go back and re-watch episodes for your assignments. -
A Collection of Texts Celebrating Joss Whedon and His Works Krista Silva University of Puget Sound, [email protected]
Student Research and Creative Works Book Collecting Contest Essays University of Puget Sound Year 2015 The Wonderful World of Whedon: A Collection of Texts Celebrating Joss Whedon and His Works Krista Silva University of Puget Sound, [email protected] This paper is posted at Sound Ideas. http://soundideas.pugetsound.edu/book collecting essays/6 Krista Silva The Wonderful World of Whedon: A Collection of Texts Celebrating Joss Whedon and His Works I am an inhabitant of the Whedonverse. When I say this, I don’t just mean that I am a fan of Joss Whedon. I am sincere. I live and breathe his works, the ever-expanding universe— sometimes funny, sometimes scary, and often heartbreaking—that he has created. A multi- talented writer, director and creator, Joss is responsible for television series such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer , Firefly , Angel , and Dollhouse . In 2012 he collaborated with Drew Goddard, writer for Buffy and Angel , to bring us the satirical horror film The Cabin in the Woods . Most recently he has been integrated into the Marvel cinematic universe as the director of The Avengers franchise, as well as earning a creative credit for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. My love for Joss Whedon began in 1998. I was only eleven years old, and through an incredible moment of happenstance, and a bit of boredom, I turned the television channel to the WB and encountered my first episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer . I was instantly smitten with Buffy Summers. She defied the rules and regulations of my conservative southern upbringing. -

Why No Wonder Woman?
Why No Wonder Woman? A REPORT ON THE HISTORY OF WONDER WOMAN AND A CALL TO ACTION!! Created for Wonder Woman Fans Everywhere Introduction by Jacki Zehner with Report Written by Laura Moore April 15th, 2013 Wonder Woman - p. 2 April 15th, 2013 AN INTRODUCTION AND FRAMING “The destiny of the world is determined less by battles that are lost and won than by the stories it loves and believes in” – Harold Goddard. I believe in the story of Wonder Woman. I always have. Not the literal baby being made from clay story, but the metaphorical one. I believe in a story where a woman is the hero and not the victim. I believe in a story where a woman is strong and not weak. Where a woman can fall in love with a man, but she doesnʼt need a man. Where a woman can stand on her own two feet. And above all else, I believe in a story where a woman has superpowers that she uses to help others, and yes, I believe that a woman can help save the world. “Wonder Woman was created as a distinctly feminist role model whose mission was to bring the Amazon ideals of love, peace, and sexual equality to ʻa world torn by the hatred of men.ʼ”1 While the story of Wonder Woman began back in 1941, I did not discover her until much later, and my introduction didnʼt come at the hands of comic books. Instead, when I was a little girl I used to watch the television show starring Lynda Carter, and the animated television series, Super Friends. -

But that trouble is strong kin to the freedom that keeps us flying. To weather the good along with the bad, a few critical ingredients should always be rightly considered and well met: a sturdy boat, an honest crew, a reliable firearm and a stiff drink. This little ebook deals with the latter. Whether it’s another depressing Unification Day, an upscale shindig or a just an evening with the crew, continue reading for the best mixed drinks the ‘verse has to offer. For starters, check out a few recipes for mudder’s milk. From there on out I’ll highlight the cocktail and shooter I’ve found best suited to each of Serenity’s crew. 4 David Mark Brown No browncoat gathering or Firefly marathon is complete without a good stiff drink. So get out your firefly shaped tumbler (What? You don’t have one?), put on your brown coat and make sure to have plenty of ice, because it’s time to mix me a drink, gorramit. -
Women in Film Time: Forty Years of the Alien Series (1979–2019)
IAFOR Journal of Arts & Humanities Volume 6 – Issue 2 – Autumn 2019 Women in Film Time: Forty Years of the Alien Series (1979–2019) Susan George, University of Delhi, India. Abstract Cultural theorists have had much to read into the Alien science fiction film series, with assessments that commonly focus on a central female ‘heroine,’ cast in narratives that hinge on themes of motherhood, female monstrosity, birth/death metaphors, empire, colony, capitalism, and so on. The films’ overarching concerns with the paradoxes of nature, culture, body and external materiality, lead us to concur with Stephen Mulhall’s conclusion that these concerns revolve around the issue of “the relation of human identity to embodiment”. This paper uses these cultural readings as an entry point for a tangential study of the Alien films centring on the subject of time. Spanning the entire series of four original films and two recent prequels, this essay questions whether the Alien series makes that cerebral effort to investigate the operations of “the feminine” through the space of horror/adventure/science fiction, and whether the films also produce any deliberate comment on either the lived experience of women’s time in these genres, or of film time in these genres as perceived by the female viewer. Keywords: Alien, SF, time, feminine, film 59 IAFOR Journal of Arts & Humanities Volume 6 – Issue 2 – Autumn 2019 Alien Films that Philosophise Ridley Scott’s 1979 S/F-horror film Alien spawned not only a remarkable forty-year cinema obsession that has resulted in six specific franchise sequels and prequels till date, but also a considerable amount of scholarly interest around the series. -
Firefly Season 2” Is the Only Work of Fan Fiction I’Ve Ever Written, and I Wouldn’T Be Surprised If It’S the Only One I Ever Write
Firefly 201 + script bible 30th January 2016 revision Mike Le Page Author’s notes: The act of creating art is something I hold sacred, and I have no interest in shitting on someone else’s work, especially someone I respect as much as Joss Whedon. The following spec script for “Firefly season 2” is the only work of fan fiction I’ve ever written, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s the only one I ever write. I only wrote it because I had a waking dream that provided a neat way to tie up several loose ends from the series/movie as well as a way to bring Wash back that performs a critical plot function and isn’t just fan-service. This was written with longer-format episodes in mind. The crazy idea I had was that Firefly would be the ideal property with which to trial a kind of in-cinema, once-a-month mini-movie format which would promote the community of fans gathering at cinemas and allow studios to recoup the costs of shooting more expensive “TV” shows – much the same way that iMAX cinemas sold out for showings of Game of Thrones episodes. The idea was a second season of 8x 80-90 minute minimovies of Firefly, shot in a LOTR style shoot and released once a month over a single calendar year. This idea is in no way necessary for this script to work, but it perhaps goes some way to explain the length of this script. What you’ll notice is that I’ve erred on the side of changing things considerably from the first season/movie, separating the crew and mothballing Serenity for reasons to be explained: I don’t think it’s plausible that we could come back to the crew 10+ years later and have it be exactly the same. -

An Examination of Jerry Goldsmith's
THE FORBIDDEN ZONE, ESCAPING EARTH AND TONALITY: AN EXAMINATION OF JERRY GOLDSMITH’S TWELVE-TONE SCORE FOR PLANET OF THE APES VINCENT GASSI A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN MUSIC YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO MAY 2019 © VINCENT GASSI, 2019 ii ABSTRACT Jerry GoldsMith’s twelve-tone score for Planet of the Apes (1968) stands apart in Hollywood’s long history of tonal scores. His extensive use of tone rows and permutations throughout the entire score helped to create the diegetic world so integral to the success of the filM. GoldsMith’s formative years prior to 1967–his training and day to day experience of writing Music for draMatic situations—were critical factors in preparing hiM to meet this challenge. A review of the research on music and eMotion, together with an analysis of GoldsMith’s methods, shows how, in 1967, he was able to create an expressive twelve-tone score which supported the narrative of the filM. The score for Planet of the Apes Marks a pivotal moment in an industry with a long-standing bias toward modernist music. iii For Mary and Bruno Gassi. The gift of music you passed on was a game-changer. iv ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Heartfelt thanks and much love go to my aMazing wife Alison and our awesome children, Daniela, Vince Jr., and Shira, without whose unending patience and encourageMent I could do nothing. I aM ever grateful to my brother Carmen Gassi, not only for introducing me to the music of Jerry GoldsMith, but also for our ongoing conversations over the years about filM music, composers, and composition in general; I’ve learned so much.
