  • The Dream of Morpheus: a Character Study of Narrative Power in Neil Gaiman’S the Sandman
    – Centre for Languages and Literatur e English Studies The Dream of Morpheus: A Character Study of Narrative Power in Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman Astrid Dock ENGK01 Degree project in English Literature Autumn Term 2018 Centre for Languages and Literature Lund University Supervisor: Kiki Lindell Abstract This essay is primarily focused on the ambiguity surrounding Morpheus’ death in Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman. There is a divide in the character that is not reconciled within the comic: whether or not Morpheus is in control of the events that shape his death. Shakespeare scholars who have examined the series will have Morpheus in complete control of the narrative because of the similarities he shares with the character of Prospero. Yet the opposite argument, that Morpheus is a prisoner of Gaiman’s narrative, is enabled when he is compared to Milton’s Satan. There is sufficient evidence to support both readings. However, there is far too little material reconciling these two opposite interpretations of Morpheus’ character. The aim of this essay is therefore to discuss these narrative themes concerning Morpheus. Rather than Shakespeare’s Prospero and Milton’s Satan serving metonymic relationships with Morpheus, they should be respectively viewed as foils to further the ambiguous characterisation of the protagonist. With this reading, Morpheus becomes a character simultaneously devoid of, and personified by, narrative power. ii Table of Contents Introduction ...........................................................................................................................

We launched WWE Network and announced the renewal of key television agreements in the U.K. and Thailand. These business developments represent historic milestones in our effort to realize greater value from our content and to transform our business. As we prepare for the 30th anniversary of our premiere event, WrestleMania, we look forward to celebrating our enduring legacy and ushering in a new era as we blaze new trails in the media industry. During the past year, as we prepared to transform our business, we invested in content production and talent, produced new programming and entered partnerships that enhanced our brand strength. Our 2013 OIBDA results were consistent with management expectations and guidance. We continue to believe that the creation of WWE Network and the renegotiation of key global content agreements will enable us to double or triple our 2012 OIBDA of $63 million by 2015. In 2013, our potential was echoed in the equity markets, where our stock price more than doubled. WWE’s total shareholder return of WrestleMania 29 broke the record for MetLife 116% (including a $36 million dividend payout) Stadium’s highest-grossing entertainment event. exceeded the majority of our entertainment peers and key market benchmarks, such as the S&P 500 and the Russell 2000. BLAZING NEW TRAILS: WWE NETWORK Creating new programs and distributing all of our content in ways that optimize value is our most important strategic imperative. ISSN: 1070-8286 How to Die in a Slasher Film: The Impact of Sexualization, Strength, and Flaws on Characters’ Mortality Ashley Wellman Texas Christian University & Michele Bisaccia Meitl Texas Christian University & Patrick Kinkade Texas Christian University 128 Journal of Criminal Justice and Popular Culture How to Die in a Slasher Film: The Impact of Sexualization July, 2021, Vol. 21 (Issue 1): pp. 128 – 146 Wellman, Meitl, & Kinkade Abstract Popular culture has often referenced formulaic ways to predict a character’s fate in slasher films. The cliché rules have noted only virgins live, black characters die first, and drinking and drugs nearly guarantee your death, but to what extent do characters’ basic demographics and portrayal determine whether a character lives or dies? A content analysis of forty-eight of the most influential slasher films from the 1960s – 2010s was conducted to measure factors related to character mortality. From these films, gender, race, sexualization (measured via specific acts and total sexualization), strength, and flaws were coded for 504 non killer characters. Results indicate that the factors predicting death vary by gender. For male characters, those appearing weak in terms of physical strength or courage and those males who appeared morally flawed were more likely to die than males that were strong and morally sound. Predictors of death for female characters included strength and the presence of sexual behavior (including dress, flirtatious attitude, foreplay/sex, nudity, and total sexualization).

  • ON HUMAN PRESENCE INSIDE the REPRESENTATION SPACE of the PAINT BRUSH Aurora Corominas
ON HUMAN PRESENCE INSIDE THE REPRESENTATION SPACE OF THE PAINT BRUSH Aurora Corominas [email protected] SUMMARY First the museum video and then the cinema have explored human presence immersed in pictorial material. In this article we appraise the narrative ideas of two films based on the new readabilities which have emerged from the synthetic image: episode number 5, The Crows from the film Dreams by Akira Kurosawa (1990), and What Dreams May Come by Vincent Ward (1998). Both films use the language of fables to structure their transgression against nature and both substantially broaden the viewer’s horizons of expectation, so that he sees the particular gaze the artist expressed in the pictorial originals surpassed. KEY WORDS Film aesthetics, Comparative film, Language of fables, Artist’s gesture, Film and painting ARTICLE In the second half of the 1980s, the Musée d’Orsay in Paris conceived a series of audiovisual productions to attract different kinds of audience and to publicise its collection beyond the context of the museum. That meant that they set out to show the audiovisuals not only far from the presence of the works, but also from the official discourse of the museum, which brought greater freedom when it came to finding new approaches to those same works. Sociological and statistical surveys indicated that in those years only 30% of French people went to museums, although it was a golden age in terms of the number of visits to cultural centres. Moreover, the same surveys revealed that regular visits to museums and watching television were two socially opposed practices.

  • Assignment 3 1/21/2015
Assignment 3 1/21/2015 The University of Wollongong School of Computer Science and Software Engineering CSCI124/MCS9124 Applied Programming Spring 2010 Assignment 3 (worth 6 marks) • Due at 11.59pm Thursday, September 9 (Week 7). Aim: Developing programs with dynamic memory and hashing. Requirements: This assignment involves the development of a database for a cinema. The program is designed to look up past movie releases, determining when the film was released, the rating it received from the Classification Board and its running time. To accelerate the lookup, a hash table will be used, with two possible hash functions. The program will report how efficiently the table is operating. Storage will be dynamic, enabling the space used by the program to be adjusted to suit the datafile size. The program must clean up after memory usage. During development, the program may ignore the dynamic nature until the program is working. As an addendum, the assignment also involves the use of compiler directives and makefiles. Those students who use a platform other than Linux/Unix will be required to ensure that their programs comply with the specifications below. The program is to be implemented in three files: ass3.cpp contains the simplest form of main function, hash.h contains the function prototypes of the publicly accessible functions, where the implementations of these functions will be placed in the file hash.cpp. The first two files should not be altered, although you may write your own driver programs to test your functions during development. The third file contains the stubs of the four public functions, plus a sample struct for holding the records, usable until they are changed for dynamic memory.

  • Representation of Identities in Neil Gaiman's the Sandman
SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAINBOW: REPRESENTATION OF IDENTITIES IN NEIL GAIMAN’S THE SANDMAN Andrés Romero Jódar Universidad de Zaragoza ABSTRACT Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman is a graphic novel that explores the complexities of reality and identity. The main asset of this work is its presentation of a plurality of narratives that, together, create not only a completely new world vision according to comic-book stand- ards, but also a novel conception of cultural identity. This essay aims to analyze how The Sandman deals with identity construction as fashioned by two different but related no- tions: on the one hand, identity as the outcome of the confrontation between old concep- tions of the world and new roles, duties and values; on the other hand, identity as a change of situation, as the individual wilfully escaping from old masks that imprison the self inside predetermined patterns of behaviour. KEY WORDS: Comic-book, graphic novel, Neil Gaiman, The Sandman, identity.

  • When Kerry Met Sally: Politics and Perceptions in the Demand for Movies
When Kerry Met Sally: Politics and Perceptions in the Demand for Movies∗ Jason M.T. Roos† Ron Shachar‡ September 4, 2013 Abstract Movie producers and exhibitors make various decisions requiring an understanding of moviegoer’s preferences at the local level. Two examples of such decisions are exhibitors’ allocation of screens to movies, and producers’ allocation of advertising across different regions of the country. This study presents a predictive model of local demand for movies with two unique features. First, arguing that consumers’ political tendencies have unutilized predictive power for marketing models, we allow consumers’ heterogeneity to depend on their voting tendencies. Second, instead of using the commonly used genre classifications to characterize movies, we estimate latent movie attributes. These attributes are not determined a priori by industry professionals, but rather reflect consumers’ perceptions, as revealed by their movie-going behavior. Box-office data over five years from 25 counties in the U.S. Midwest provide support for the model. First, consumers’ preferences are related to their political tendencies. For example, we find that counties that voted for congressional Republicans prefer movies starring young, white, female actors over those starring African-American, male actors. Second, perceived attributes provide new insights into con- sumers’ preferences. For example, one of these attributes is the movie’s degree of seriousness. Finally and most importantly, the two improvements proposed here have a meaningful impact on forecasting error, decreasing it by 12.6 percent. ∗Our thanks go to Preyas Desai, Ron Goettler, Joel Huber, Wagner Kamakura, Carl Mela, Rick Staelin, and Andrew Sweeting who were kind enough to share some of their expertise.
