amfAR Hong Kong 2016 3 amfAR Annual Events amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research, is recognized around the world as one of the leading nonprofit organizations dedicated to the fight against HIV/AIDS. Its fundraising events receive global media coverage and are attended by the most prominent and influential members of the entertainment, , business, and art communities. amfAR’s ability to fund groundbreaking, cure-focused research is due in large part to the money it raises through its many benefit events. Be it small cocktail receptions, art auctions, or international galas, amfAR events play a critically important role in raising funds to support innovative research programs and build HIV/AIDS awareness in the U.S. and around the world.

The gala attracts leaders from the worlds of fashion, business, entertainment, and the arts. To date, the amfAR Gala New York has raised more than $17 million for amfAR’s life-saving research.

 At the 2016 event and explorer Johan Ernst Nilson introduced a Mongolian expedition trip, which sold twice ( to Leonardo DiCaprio) for a total of $190,000.

 At the 2015 event, longtime amfAR supporter Leonardo DiCaprio donated a surprise auction lot—two seats at his personal table at the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation Gala in St. Tropez in July, plus an invitation to relax on his yacht the following day. After a lively round of bidding, four different guests offered $250,000 each, for a total of $1 million.

In the fall of 2011, a small group of young professionals from the elds of nance, art, media, fashion, and entertainment came together to form generationCURE. generationCURE founder and amfAR Trustee T. Ryan Greenawalt recruited the committee of young people dedicated to helping amfAR accelerate its search for a cure for AIDS.

“We don’t want to just be the next generation of champions for a cure for HIV/AIDS—we want to be the last one, because we believe a cure is coming in our lifetime,” says generationCURE National Chair John Cafarelli.

Targeting socially aware individuals between the ages of 25 and 40, generationCURE set three speci c goals: raise money for cure-focused research, expand amfAR’s social networks and harness the power of social media, and increase HIV awareness by ghting complacency and ignorance among young people.

To that end, generationCURE has hosted a number of events in , Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C. For the past ve years, generationCURE has Tyson Beckford celebrated the coming of summer with rooftop Solstice parties and kicked off the holiday season with festive fundraisers. generationCURE has raised over $600,000 for amfAR and remains dedicated to its mission: to cultivate the next, and last, generation of amfAR champions for a cure.

48 49 amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research, is dedicated to ending the global AIDS epidemic through innovative research. Since its founding in 1985, amfAR has accelerated the pace of HIV/AIDS research and contributed to numerous breakthroughs that are extending and saving lives around the world. Through its Research program, amfAR is advancing efforts to prevent HIV infection in those who are vulnerable and to improve treatment for people living with HIV/AIDS, with the ultimate goal of eradicating the virus. Launched in 2014, amfAR’s Countdown to a Cure for AIDS initiative is aimed at developing the scienti c basis of a cure by 2020. amfAR’s TREAT Asia program is a network of clinics, hospitals, and research institutions working with civil society to ensure the safe and effective delivery of HIV/AIDS treatments throughout Asia and the Paci c. TREAT Asia has become a model for regional collaboration on treatment preparedness, education, training, and clinical research.

Through its GMT Initiative, amfAR provides nancial and technical support to research teams and community-based advocates to investigate interventions that reduce the spread and impact of HIV among men, other men who have with men, and individuals (collectively, GMT) in developing countries. Informed by thorough research and analysis, amfAR is a highly respected advocate of rational and compassionate AIDS-related public policy. The Foundation’s Public Policy program is engaged in efforts to increase investments in HIV/AIDS research; ensure a robust response to the global epidemic; expand access to prevention, treatment, and care; and protect the civil rights of all people affected by HIV/AIDS.
