It took the critics one week to write these reviews: "Colin was the lead singer of the Zombies and in that capacity helped to create some of the most memorable music of the sixties. His first solo LP is an audio delight, a beautifully crafted work that weaves an enchanting aura of restfulness. KYGO X TINA TURNER “WHAT’S LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT” OUT NOW Global superstar, producer and DJ, Kyrre Gørvell-Dahll – a.k.a Kygo, teams up with the incomparable, brilliant, and legendary Grammy Award winning superstar Tina Turner to unveil a remake of “What’s Love Got To Do With It” – Turner’s iconic #1 song that was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame and is included in Rolling Stone Magazine’s list of “The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.” “What’s Love Got To Do With It” comes alongside a brand new video directed by Sarah Bahbah and stars Laura Harrier (Hollywood, Blackkklansman) and Charles Michael Davis (The Originals, The Vampire Diaries). Listen / Watch here HERE – out now via Sony Music International/Ultra Records/RCA Records. Says Kygo, “I couldn’t be more excited to collaborate with Tina Turner, who is an icon that I grew up listening to. ‘What’s Love Got To Do With It’ is one of my all-time favorite songs so to have a chance to rework it has been a very special moment in my career. I love working around timeless vocals and although it’s challenging to preserve elements of the original track and adding my own touch, I’m extremely happy with how it turned out!” It’s been a big summer for Kygo who back in May released his critically acclaimed third full-length album Golden Hour which features his hit single “Lose Somebody” with OneRepublic as well as “Higher Love” with Whitney Houston, the latter of which has more than 651 million audio and video streams combined and charted at Top 40 radio.

Through an exploration of voice, lyricism, kinesthetic performance, instrumentality and visual aesthetics, this course examines the “world wide underground” of black women’s sonic cultures, and it re-interrogates pop music subculture theories through the intersecting prisms of race, gender, class and sexuality. It considers the ways that black women musicians operate as socio- political and cultural intellectuals, and it reads their work as historically-situated cultural texts that resonate in multiple contexts. Throughout the semester, we will explore the ways in which black women culture workers have stylized and innovated disruptive and iconic performance practices within the context of American popular music culture, from the postbellum era through the present day. Part of the aim of this course is to trace the tensions between the enormous influence and ubiquity of the black female singing voice in globalized popular cultures and the ways in which a range of entertainers have nonetheless negotiated eccentric and “obscure” musical gestures that signaled and affirmed the existence of resistant musical aesthetics in the face of panopticism.

  • Tina Theory: Notes on Fierceness
Journal of Popular Music Studies, Volume 24, Issue 1, Pages 71–86 Tina Theory: Notes on Fierceness Madison Moore Yale University Touching Queerness Everything I know about being queer I learned from Tina Turner. More specifically, you might say that Ike and Tina’scover of “Proud Mary”— the soundtrack of my childhood—taught me, through camp performance, how to be a “Mary.” During the holiday parties at my great-grandmother Lucille “Big Momma” Jones’ house, for as long as I can remember, we kids ended up in the “Children’s Room” so the grown folks could curse, drink whiskey, smoke, laugh, and be as loose as they felt. The “Children’s Room” was not that special. It was usually a bedroom with a computer or television and a few board games, located next to the food which was always laid out buffet style. My favorite moments were when we would lip sync for our lives by doing drag karaoke, where my cousins and I would lock ourselves away and perform great popular music hits for an invisible audience. We pulled songs from Christina Aguilera or Britney Spears’ latest album to older joints that circulated long before our time, songs like “Stop! (In the Name of Love)” by Diana Ross and The Supremes and Patti LaBelle’s“Lady Marmalade.” But one song we kept in our catalog and that we seemed to have the most fun with was the Ike and Tina Turner cover of “Proud Mary.” Whenever we did “Mary” I insisted in being Tina. But what was it that drew me—a black gay boy rooted, like Tina, in Saint Louis, which is either the South or the Midwest depending on who

  • The Hollywood Cinema Industry's Coming of Digital Age: The
The Hollywood Cinema Industry’s Coming of Digital Age: the Digitisation of Visual Effects, 1977-1999 Volume I Rama Venkatasawmy BA (Hons) Murdoch This thesis is presented for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of Murdoch University 2010 I declare that this thesis is my own account of my research and contains as its main content work which has not previously been submitted for a degree at any tertiary education institution. -------------------------------- Rama Venkatasawmy Abstract By 1902, Georges Méliès’s Le Voyage Dans La Lune had already articulated a pivotal function for visual effects or VFX in the cinema. It enabled the visual realisation of concepts and ideas that would otherwise have been, in practical and logistical terms, too risky, expensive or plain impossible to capture, re-present and reproduce on film according to so-called “conventional” motion-picture recording techniques and devices. Since then, VFX – in conjunction with their respective techno-visual means of re-production – have gradually become utterly indispensable to the array of practices, techniques and tools commonly used in filmmaking as such. For the Hollywood cinema industry, comprehensive VFX applications have not only motivated the expansion of commercial filmmaking praxis. They have also influenced the evolution of viewing pleasures and spectatorship experiences. Following the digitisation of their associated technologies, VFX have been responsible for multiplying the strategies of re-presentation and story-telling as well as extending the range of stories that can potentially be told on screen. By the same token, the visual standards of the Hollywood film’s production and exhibition have been growing in sophistication.

Special Ferdinando Baldi Memorial Issue (1927-2007) WAI! Ferdinando Baldi Memorial Issue The Swingin’ Doors Ferdinando Baldi was born on May 9, 1927 in Cava dei Tirreni, Salerno, Italy. He started his film career in the early 1950s with a number of forgotten low budget films and musical comedies. His break came in 1960 as the co-director of "David and Goliath" which was part biblical epic and part sword and sandal, and starred Orson Welles. The success of this film saw Baldi become strongly associated with the sword and sandal film genre for the next few years, and he would go on to direct a variety of genre films such as "I, Tartari" in 1961, again with Welles as the star. He also directed "Son of Cleopatra" (1964) with another American actor Mark Damon. 1966 found him busy filming "Massacre in the Black Forest" and "The Shadow of Eagles" both with Cameron Mitchell and the low budget spy film "Suicide Mission to Singapore". He also directed young Franco Nero in "Texas, Addio". With the explosion of the Spaghetti western films Baldi became known as one of the leading directors in the genre. "Little Rita of the West" (1967) was one of his most unique projects which was a western musical starring Rita Pavone and one of the early films of actor Terence Hill. In 1968 he filmed "Preparati la bara!" (Viva Django) which was a follow up to Sergio Corbucci’s "Django". It starred Terence Hill, who dramatically resembled Nero, in a straight forward role. 1969 saw "Gunman of the Ave Maria" ("The Forgotten Pistolero") with a plot taken from a Greek tragedy.
