  • A Hidden Landscape: Heaton Industry in the Eighteenth Century
A Hidden Landscape: Heaton industry in the eighteenth century Derek Barker For centuries Heaton had consisted of a pattern of cottages, small farms and fields, some of which pre-dated the late eighteenth century’s Enclosure Act. Around the time of this Act local landowners began to exploit land, previously used solely for agriculture, by promoting extraction industries like quarrying, coal mining, limestone burning, and brick making. The financial rewards of such activities were aided by an improved infrastructure of turnpike roads and canals. After a century or so the profitability of these industrial activities declined in their turn. The expansion of Bradford, with the development of a rail link from Frizinghall in 1875, made sales of land for villa development more desirable. Mine shafts and quarries were filled in and waste tips removed. Heaton today is a quiet residential suburb in north Bradford whose ‘post- industrial landscape’ is so extremely post-industrial as to be virtually hidden. Predictably, much Heaton history was recorded, a century or more ago, by William Cudworth.1 In 2001 the late Stanley King published the only modern study of the township.2 Nobody will ever surpass the pride, love, and knowledge which this author possessed for the place of his birth. He studied very widely, and is reliable in his recording, but the lack of an index and detailed referencing can make the confirmation of individual facts from his necessary account quite difficult. Nonetheless readers may reasonably ask if I can now contribute anything new to these authors’ contributions. The first essay I wrote on local history, ‘Coal Mining in Heaton Woods’, was the result of interest stimulated by a woodland walk with an historian, the late Kath Alred.

  • Calderdale Way Walking Route
Calderdale Way, walk route – dramatic West Yorkshire The Calderdale Way is a 50 mile (80 km) walk exploring the hills, moors and valleys of Calderdale. It is an ‘up and down’ journey with few level sections. The higher levels, however, provide some exceptionally fine panoramic views. There are some steep sections and there will be muddy parts following wet weather. Some areas of moorland are exposed. Mileage details, which are approximate, are given for longer sections with intermediate distances. The best walking and views as with all walks, would be in sunny weather following a dry spell. Appropriate footwear and clothing is needed for every part. The walk is accessible by public transport. Additionally it can be split into short walks also by using public transport. Additionally, there are many link paths. For example, an easy walk would be the three mile Norland to Ripponden section. Take the bus from Halifax to Norland and then walk on the level and downhill to Ripponden with another bus back to Halifax. Another even shorter walk combined with sight-seeing, would be to take the train to Hebden Bridge, bus to Heptonstall, and walk ¾ mile down to Hardcastle Crag and bus back to Hebden Bridge. The whole walk is circular and so can be started at any point; this starts at Brighouse. There are bus services to each of the distance points. Train services are available at Brighouse, Todmorden, Hebden Bridge, Mytholmroyd, Sowerby Bridge and Halifax. Route map and accommodation links at end of these details. Brighouse, Southowram, West Vale, Norland, Ripponden, Mill Bank (11.5 miles; start satnav HD6 1PQ) This section is a relatively easy introduction to the walk.

  • Eliza Jane John Wheelhouse
Lance Corporal Joseph Alfred Holt (20th March 1888 – 31st October 1915) Joseph Alfred Holt was born to parents Alfred and Betsey Holt on 20th March 1888. They probably lived in Bradford as Joseph Alfred Holt was baptised at the Otley Road Wesleyan Methodist Church, Bradford on 3rd May 1888. Joe Holt is remembered along with his maternal grandfather, John Wheelhouse, on a memorial inscription in St Matthew’s Churchyard, Lightcliffe plot D55 although neither were actually buried there. The inscription reads:- In loving memory of Ann Wells who died September 5th 1879 aged 77 years. Also of ELIZA JANE the beloved wife of JOHN WHEELHOUSE of Bailiffe Bridge who died December 15th 1909 Aged 69 years. Also of the above JOHN WHEELHOUSE who died September 18th 1913 aged 86 years. Also of JOE HOLT the beloved grandson of the above WHO WAS KILLED in FLANDERS October 31st October 1915 AGED 27 years and is interred at Malakoff. The grave was owned by John Wheelhouse when Ann Wells was buried, although who she was and what her link to John Wheelhouse was has not been established. Eliza Jane Wheelhouse, a former school mistress, was in fact the second wife of John Wheelhouse and so not Joseph Alfred’s actual maternal grandmother. The memorial has recently been restored. 1 2 Joseph Alfred Holt was the only surviving child of six born to Alfred Holt and Betsey Wheelhouse by the time of the 1911 census. His parents were married on 21st August 1878 at St Matthew’s Church, Lightcliffe. At that time Alfred was a 22 year old Clerk as was his father Joseph W Holt; the Holts were from Brighouse.

  • Our Ref: 0980/19 I Am Sending This Request Under the Freedom Of
Our ref: 0980/19 I am sending this request under the Freedom of Information Act on Tuesday February 12th 2019 to ask for the following information about knife possession offences broken down by age, gender and year. (I am most interested in people under 18 carrying knives). Please provide the following information: 1. The number of knife / bladed instrument possession offences for a) 2014 b) 2015 c) 2016 d) 2017 e) 2018 f) please provide a breakdown by gender. 2. For the same time period and giving the figures for each year - how many of those offenders were under 18? Please include: a) the exact age for each person under 18. b) the gender of each person under 18. c) whether the offender was caught carrying a knife or bladed object on school / educational premises? If possible, please provide the name of the school / establishment. d) A breakdown by sentence / punishment – i.e. people cautioned, reprimanded or convicted. My report is focusing on the number of women under 18 caught carrying knifes. So the gender breakdown is really important, as are the exact ages for those caught who are under 18. If including convictions is an over cost response – then omit those from your response and proceed with this amended request. Please see the attached tables which contain the requested information. West Yorkshire Police are committed to prosecuting anyone found to be possessing or using a knife or firearm. The work of our partners and community based projects is important, as is the vigilance of families who believe one of their relatives may carry weapons.
