Prague Castle CITY TOUR Prague Historical Automobiles Tour Praga Automobiles was founded in 1907 and was a major success of the first Czech-Moravian Machine Factory, producing a series of exquisite works of art. Several of these vehicles have been painstakingly cared for and thoroughly restored to the original day, off the showroom floor, beauty! These cars will be chaffered by a certified Tour Guide who in addition to navigating through the romantic small streets of Prague, will also explain some of Prague’s history and point of interests. www.PragueEventery.com CITY TOUR A Pg. 1 of 2 Prague Castle Prague Castle is the largest medieval castle complex in Europe. The Prague Castle complex, seat of Czech kings throughout the ages, comprises many buildings, including the gothic St. Vitus Cathedral (Prague's most recognisable landmark), several palaces, a monastery, museums & galleries, viewing towers, St. George's Basilica and the enchanting Golden Lane. The crown jewels are kept in Prague Castle, as are the relics of Bohemian kings, or precious Christian reliquiae. Events important for the whole country have taken place within its walls. The Prague Castle, a symbol of Czech statehood, has been the focal point of Prague for over a thousand years. The unique complex of palaces, cathedrals and other buildings with diverse architecture offers a cross-section of Czech history. It is here that all the various architectural styles, ranging from the Romanesque foundations to the latest reconstruction carried out in the 1920s by architect Josip Pleènik, flow together in graceful symbiosis. Here you can experience the atmosphere of kings and presidents who have been received by the president of the Czech Republic, or kings and queens prior, in these very rooms. www.PragueEventery.com CITY TOUR A Pg. 2 of 2 Prague Castle On the basis of archaeological research Prague Castle was established in the 9th century. A Romanesque palace was erected during the 12th century, and in the 14th century, under the reign of Charles IV, it was rebuilt to Gothic style. A further reconstruction of the Royal Palace then took place under the Jagellons at the end of the 15th century. The builder, Benedikt Rejt, also added the now famous Vladislav Hall. As a result of a big fire in 1541, Prague Castle underwent further works during the 16th century. The Spanish Hall was added during the reign of Rudolf II and final alterations were made by Empress Maria Theresa. After World War I, the interior and gardens of Prague Castle were renovated by the architect J. Plecnik. Today, Prague Castle is the seat of the President of the Czech Republic, and serves as the historical and political centre of both city and state. The Changing of the Guard at the front gates takes place every hour. The Prague Loreto is an artistic and historical monument, as well as a Baroque pilgrimage site the renown of which in the city can perhaps be compared only with that of the wonder-working statue of the Infant of Prague. The carillon encourages to pray every hour. At the time it was put into operation - at the end of the 17th century - it was a true rarity in Bohemia. It was given to the Loreto by the rich merchant from the Lesser Town, Eberhard von Glauchau. The author of all thirty signed bells (only one was damaged in the 18th century and replaced) was the Amsterdam town bell-founder Claudy Fremy, who made them between 1683-91 www.PragueEventery.com .

  • Leonardo Da Vinci and Benedikt Ried
České vysoké u čení v Praze, fakulta architektury Czech Technical University in Prague, Faculty of Architecture Doc. PhDr. Pavel Kalina, CSc. Leonardo da Vinci a Benedikt Ried Leonardo da Vinci and Benedikt Ried 1 SUMMARY Leonardo da Vinci was not only an “ingenious” painter, but first of all a universal advisor in varied areas including architecture and technical sciences. Benedikt Ried, on the other hand, was “only” an architect. The profession of an architect of his time included, however, a row of activities related to building planning and realizations. Some aspects of their work may be compared as they were contemporaries and it is impossible to exclude that they used the same sources. The first area in which it is possible to find common features is the architectural naturalism. Leonardo created the decoration of Sala delle Asse in the Castello Sforzesco which changed its vault into a stage for illusionistic branches and other floral motives. Similarly, Benedikt Ried designed the Royal Oratory in St Vitus Cathedral in Prague where the traditional ribs were substituted by stone branches. This kind of naturalism expresses an understanding of a building as an organism. The second common area is the fortification architecture. Benedikt Ried is the probable author of the outer fortification of Rábí Castle in south-western Bohemia, which is completely different from local tradition. This fortification includes a polygonal bastion, which is probably the oldest one in Central Europe. Leonardo is sometimes identified as the author of the fortress La Verruca near Pisa, defended by polygonal bastions. In his sketchbooks it is possible to find hundreds of fortification studies as well as studies dedicated to problems of ballistics and mechanics which could serve as a basis for his fortification studies.

ABSTRACTS, POSTER 107 Archaeobotanical analysis OF THE Early MODERN vault INFILL FROM Vladislav HALL, OLD Royal PALACE, PRAGUE CASTLE, CZECH REPUBLIC Jaromír BENEŠ 1, Jitka KOSŇOVSKá1, Jan FROLÍK2, Josef MATIáŠEK2 Key words: Macro-remains, Xylotomy, Vault infill, Early Modern Period, Arachis hypogaea Pražský hrad (Prague castle) was one of the most important medieval and early modern royal courts in Europe. Within it, Vladislavsky sál (Vladislav Hall) was the main ceremonial space used at the end of the Gothic period and beginning of the Renaissance. In 2008, restoration of the hall floor was carried out in connection with archaeological research focused on detailed understanding of material, sociological and environmental knowledge of the historical building. The most valuable results are connected with the vault infill, which was subjected to archaeobotanical analyses. A combination of dry sieving and flota- tion methods have been used and allowed to specify the different amounts and quality of the archaeobo- tanical assemblages. Based on the macroremains and xylotomy (wood) analysis of the waste-vault infill from the Early Modern period floor in Vladislavsky sál, the character of the Prague Castle environmental and the dietary traditions from the 16th to the early 20th century are reconstructed. The waste-vault infill is unique material consisting of specially selected components of dry waste, targeted to isolation func- tion. Beside the many unique artefacts such as the wooden spoon, the playing cards, knives, alchemists’ weights, handwriting and so on, the main archaeobotanical collection of the basic elements of waste materials such as hay, fuel charcoal and constructional wood were analysed. The assemblage of useful plants consisted of many common and valued taxa such as Amygdalus communis, Juglans regia, Per- sica vulgaris and others.
