Luckily, we can read it in the comfort of our home and ponder the earth-shattering thesis by the authors: that Jesus' message basically is a Buddhist message. • Shroud Spectrum International No. 41 Part 7
35 RECENTLY PUBLISHED History, Science, Theology and the Shroud; Proceedings of the St. Louis Symposium, St. Louis, Missouri, June 22-23, 1991. Edited by Aram Berard, S.J. 357 pp, black & white illus. On the spacious lawn of St. Louis Abbey, as relatives and alumni greeted friends gathering for Homecoming festivities, Brother Joe Marino, member of this Benedictine community, was introduced to a guest as "the monk all wrapped up in the Shroud". That was about the time when Bro. Joe had just begun to send out his Source Sheet, now fully developed as Sources for Information and Materials on the Shroud of Turin. Even before he began this work, the young Benedictine was already nurturing the idea of a symposium that would emphasize the theological aspects of the Holy Shroud. I mention this — laying to rest the periods of uncertainty, of opposition, of immense effort — because — with all due credit to those who sponsored his undertaking — the symposium was the realization of Bro. Joe's own idea. And since this book of the Proceedings is restricted to the publication of the papers presented, Bro. Joe Marino's name nowhere appears. The Shroud has often been discussed in the light of theology, usually with intent to bolster the Relic's "authenticity" by reference to certain Scripture passages. But we have heard very little that is new. Our little army, camped in soggy tents, tramps bravely up and down a well- trodden plot while vast unresearched fields and mysterious forests stretch to endless horizons. Invert the proposition: Can the Shroud illuminate the tenets of theology? Perhaps the first step is to scientifically demonstrate the happy obsolescence of the old conflict between science and religion.

  • Rozabal – Het Graf Van Jezus Christus (As)?
Rozabal – Het graf van Jezus Christus (as)?

  • Holger Kersten: "It Is Simply of Vital Importance to Find Again the Path To
Holger Kersten: "It is simply of vital importance to find again the path to the sources, to the eternal and central truths of Christ's message, which has been shaken almost beyond recognition by the profane ambitions of more or less secular institutions arrogating to themselves a religious authority. This is an attempt to open a way to a new future, firmly founded in the true spiritual and religious sources of the past". Thus begins Holger Kersten's book "Jesus Lived in India". This German book is a thorough, methodical and authoritative examination of the evidence of Christ's life beyond the Middle East before the Crucifixion and in India and elsewhere after it. This article is a summary of Kersten's exhaustive research into Christ's travels after the Crucifixion, his arrival in India with the Mother Mary and finally his death and entombment in Kashmir. Kersten notes the many parallels of Christ's teachings with other religious and cultural traditions and suggests that at least some of these figures may have been one and the same personality. It is not possible, Kersten asserts, to disprove that Christ went to India. The current information documenting Christ's life is restricted to the gospels and the work of Church theologians. One can hardly trust these sources to be objective considering their obvious interest in maintaining the authority of their Church and its grip on the masses. The Russian scholar, Nicolai Notovich, was the first to suggest that Christ may have gone to India. In 1887, Notovich, a Russian scholar and Orientalist, arrived in Kashmir during one of several journeys to the Orient.

  • Robert E. Van Voorst Jesus Outside the New Testabookzz.Org .Pdf
JESUS OUTSIDE THE NEW TESTAMENT Studying the Historical Jesus It was once fashionable to claim that Jesus could not be known as a figure of history and that even if he could be known in that way the result would not be of interest for faith. Both contentions have been laid to rest over the past twenty years. Scholarship has seen archaeological discoveries, advances in the study of Jewish and Hellenistic literature, a renewed interest in the social milieu of Ju- daism and Christianity, and critical investigation of the systematic relationship between those two religions (and others in the ancient world). In the midst of these discussions — and many others — Jesus has appeared again and again as a person who can be understood historically and who must be assessed before we can give any complete explanation of the history of the period in which he lived. As he and his movement are better understood, the nature of the faith that they pioneered has been more clearly defined. Of course, the Jesus who is under investigation cannot simply be equated with whatever the Gospels say of him. The Gospels, composed in Greek a gen- eration after Jesus' death, reflect the faith of early Christians who came to be- lieve in him. Their belief included reference to historical data but also included the interpretation of Jesus as it had developed after his time. The critical tasks of coming to grips with the development of the New Testament, the nature of primitive Christian faith, and the historical profile of Jesus are all interrelated.

Peter Carnley sums up the significance of the Resurrection for incarnational theology in the words: 'It is the resurrection which is the foundation of the Church, its worship and its theology, for the Church gathers not just around the rehearsal of the story of the incarnation of God, but around the perceived presence of the raised Christ himself ' (Carnley 1987: 8, orig.

  • Shroud News Issue #85 October 1994
A NEWSLETTER ABOUT THE HOLY SHROUD OF TURIN edited by REX MORGAN, Author of several books on the Shroud Issue Number 85 OCTOBER 1994 Pope John Paul II receives a gift of an icon from Polish Prime Minister Waldemar Pawlak. The icon bears many of the Shroud features. Picture from The Times 19 May 1994 2 SHROUD NEWS No 85 (October 1994) EDITORIAL I remember forecasting at the time of the C14 capers in 1988 and the peremptory dismissal of the Shroud as a medieval fake by the world media that it would take about five years for interest in the subject to surface again. This seems to be happening with gusto. On the one hand I have been surprised at the number of news items and huge articles being published in some newspapers and on the other it fits my view that a generation in newspaper reporting is about five years. This means that bright young journalists, appropriately wet behind the ears, are discovering the Shroud as if it were something new, as it is to them, and are busy writing it up, whether for or against the possibility of its authenticity. I happen to think that any publicity is usually good publicity and the Shroud has had virtually none for the past five years. Once again the world media is venturing into its aura and there is plenty of evidence to suggest that they are not quite so cavalier about its being a fake as they were. This has been prompted to a large degree, not by any genuine learned interest in an important subject (how many newspapers are stirred by such lofty ideals these days?) but by a proliferation of new theories, duly sensationalised by their promoters and thus worthy of populist treatment as some kind of hit and run centre page weekend reading gig.
