llllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll 1. SILKEBORG IDRÆTSFORENING I NAVNE OG TAL. 1917 - 2018 ---------- FORORD! SIFs hovedformand Poul Hansen. -

Dylan and Dylan
Dylan and Dylan The Monterey Peninsula’s celebrated bard and biographical dramatist Taelen Thomas collaborates with artists Richard Rosen and Steve Mortensen for a beguiling excursion into the lives, minds and works of two passionate and unpredictable literary geniuses who share a name: Dylan Thomas and Bob Dylan. Central Coast poetical showman Thomas, who himself hails from the Welsh lineage of Thomases of the earlier Dylan, has presented his many unique and diverse performances of famous poets, writers and singular characters over the past 30 years. And he is a captivating reciter of his own fine poetry. In “Dylan and Dylan,” Thomas with musicians Rosen and Mortensen present a rare and original interweaving of these two titanic figures of the 20th century--a brilliant concept, masterfully executed by this engaging trio. Thomas has been performing the works of Dylan Thomas for decades. Mortensen brings accomplished guitar skills and singing in Dylan’s gruff vocal style. Harmonica virtuoso Rosen adds the third lyrical voice to this magical double-Dylan celebration. The trio deftly interlaces poetry, music and narrative to reveal the thematic and life story likenesses between these two great literary voices. Words and songs mirror one another in themes of youth, love, the horrors of war, the joys of beauty, lusty courtship and the mysteries of life and death. In addition to their poetic brilliance, the two Dylans share qualities of crusty individualism and a challenging way with social norms. The alchemy of their deep, passionate and oracular writing, speaking from two wings of the 20th century, create a fascinating resonance. -

Prizing African Literature: Awards and Cultural Value
Prizing African Literature: Awards and Cultural Value Doseline Wanjiru Kiguru Dissertation presented for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Stellenbosch University Supervisors: Dr. Daniel Roux and Dr. Mathilda Slabbert Department of English Studies Stellenbosch University March 2016 i Stellenbosch University https://scholar.sun.ac.za Declaration By submitting this thesis electronically, I declare that the entirety of the work contained herein is my own, original work, that I am the sole author thereof (save to the extent explicitly otherwise stated), that reproduction and publication thereof by Stellenbosch University will not infringe any third party rights and that I have not previously in its entirety or in part submitted it for obtaining any qualification. March 2016 Signature…………….………….. Copyright © 2016 Stellenbosch University All rights reserved ii Stellenbosch University https://scholar.sun.ac.za Dedication To Dr. Mutuma Ruteere iii Stellenbosch University https://scholar.sun.ac.za Abstract This study investigates the centrality of international literary awards in African literary production with an emphasis on the Caine Prize for African Writing (CP) and the Commonwealth Short Story Prize (CWSSP). It acknowledges that the production of cultural value in any kind of setting is not always just a social process, but it is also always politicised and leaning towards the prevailing social power. The prize-winning short stories are highly influenced or dependent on the material conditions of the stories’ production and consumption. The content is shaped by the prize, its requirements, rules, and regulations as well as the politics associated with the specific prize. As James English (2005) asserts, “[t]here is no evading the social and political freight of a global award at a time when global markets determine more and more the fate of local symbolic economies” (298). -

Intergovernmental Grants As a Tactical Instrument: Some
Intergovernmental Grants as a Tactical Instrument: Some Empirical Evidence from Swedish Municipalities* Eva Johansson) June, 1999 Abstract Are grants to Swedish municipalities tactical? In this essay, I derive testable implications from a theoretical voting model and test these on a panel of 255 Swedish municipalities, 1981 - 1995. In order to decide which regions that are politically powerful, both election results, and survey data from the Swedish election studies are used. The results, although somewhat ambiguous, support the hypothesis that intergovernmental grants are used in order to win votes. JEL classification: D72, H77 Keywords: political economy, tactical redistribution, intergovernmental grants * I am grateful for comments from Sören Blomquist, Vidar Christiansen, Matz Dahlberg, Torsten Persson, seminar participants at Uppsala University and workshop participants at IIES. ) Department of Economics, Uppsala University, Box 513, SE-751 20 Uppsala, Sweden, e-mail: [email protected]. 1 1. Introduction In the field of political economics there is a growing literature claiming that redistribution is not performed on the basis of welfare maximization alone, but that it also, to a large extent, is tactically motivated (see, e.g., Meltzer & Richards, 1981; Lindbeck & Weibull, 1987; Dixit & Londregan, 1996; Grossman & Helpman, 1994). Most of the literature in this field is theoretical and it is by no means obvious how to test the models empirically since they partly build on variables such as ideological preferences, election promises and lobbying contributions that are difficult to observe and measure. The purpose of this paper is to take the step from theory to data and test empirically if intergovernmental grants to Swedish municipalities are used for pork barrel politics. -
