McFarland & Co Inc. Paperback. Book Condition: new. BRAND NEW, Bibb Falk: The Man Who Replaced Shoeless Joe, William A. Cook, Born in Austin, Texas in 1899, standing six feet in height, Bibb August Falk was a classic stereo type of a tall Texan; a man who brimmed with confidence and played the game of baseball with a swagger. He played three years of varsity football and baseball at the University of Texas before being signed by Chicago White Sox following graduation in 1920. Falk reported to the White Sox that summer without ever having played one game in the minor leagues. Little did he know that in just a couple of months after arriving on the south side of Chicago, he as an untested rookie, would be called upon to confront the daunting challenge of replacing the legendary Shoeless Joe Jackson in the White Sox lineup when he was banned from organized ball for complicity in the scandal surrounding the 1919 World Series. Retiring from major league baseball aer a brilliant playing career following the 1931 season, Falk returned to the University of Texas in 1940 as head baseball coach and proceeded to become a Longhorn legend. During his twenty-five year stint as head coach, Falk's teams won two National Championships, fieen Southwest Conference titles and four co-championships. When Bibb Falk died at the age of 90 in June 1989 he was the last surviving member of the 1920 Chicago White Sox. Not only was Dedeaux the main architect for the success of the USC baseball program, but also one of the great ambassadors for college baseball and amateur baseball in international competition. In his 45-year tenure at USC (1942-86), Dedeaux led the Trojans to 11 national championships and 28 conference titles. He posted an overall record of 1,332-571-11 for a superb .699 winning percentage. At his retirement, he had won more games than any other college baseball coach (he currently ranks seventh among Division I coaches). His teams from 1970-74 won fi ve straight NCAA championships, a record that may never be broken. No other school has won more than two in a row. Two personal honors for Dedeaux, which are quite fi tting considering his accomplishments, came in 1999 when he was named “Coach of the Century” by both Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball. As part of the 50th anniversary of the College World Series in 1996, Dedeaux was named the head coach of the All-Time CWS team by a panel of former World Series coaches, media and college baseball offi cials. In 1999, he was presented with keys to the city of Omaha (home to the College World Series). Dedeaux was named Coach of the Year six times by the American Baseball Coaches Association and was inducted into the organization’s Hall of Fame in 1970.

Texas Sports Hall of Fame The Texas Sports Hall of Fame was organized in 1951 by the Texas Sports Writers Association. Each year the honorees are inducted into the Hall of Fame at a gala dinner. (The second such fete in 1952 was headlined by, “That filmland athlete, Ronald Reagan, and his actress wife, Nancy Davis,” The Dallas Morning News, June 9, 1952.) The hall was originally in Grand Prairie in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The Hall of Fame was closed in 1986 for financial reasons, but in 1991 it was reopened in Waco. In addition to memorabilia, the new location also houses archives. Under the current selection process, dues-paying members of the Texas Sports Hall of Fame can nominate any number of individuals. (Anyone can become a member.) The selection committee, chaired by Dave Campbell, founder of Texas Football Magazine, reviews all nominees and creates the “Official Voting Membership” ballot. Ballots are then mailed to the voting membership, former Texas Sports Hall of Fame inductees and the media selection committee. The results of the balloting are announced in the fall with the induction banquet following in the winter. The hall of fame website is at www.tshof.org.
