5 NETBALL IN NEW ZEALAND

Netball is one of the highest participation sports, number one for females, in the country and holds a significant place in New Zealand Society. Through its Zones, Centres, Clubs and Schools there are over 145,000 affiliated players.

The sport contributes significantly to communities both urban and rural, providing opportunities for members to participate in healthy activity, have fun, develop leadership skills and learn values of fair play and achievement. All of these attributes contribute to the development of netballers, officials and administrators as individuals and to their communities across the Zone.

Netball Northern Total Membership 46,986 17 centres

Netball Waikato Bay of Plenty Total Membership 22,327 26 centres

Netball Central Total Membership 36,636 16 centres

6 NETBALL MAINLAND ZONE

The Netball Mainland (NM) Zone is one of five Zones across the country, established in October 2012 as part of the review of the structure of Netball in New Zealand replacing the previous two regional entities; “Canterbury Netball” and “Tasman Netball,” and “Team Canterbury Netball Limited”.

The Zone has 17 affiliated Netball Centres; spread across the Nelson, Marlborough, Tasman, West Coast and Canterbury (as far south as the Waitaki river) areas and has responsibility for the support and delivery of netball from community level through to high performance – leading the development of players, coaches, umpires, administrators, technical officials and volunteers across these levels.

10 BOARD CHAIR AND

CEO REPORT

There are three ‘C’s’ in life, choice, chance and change You must make the choice to take the chance If you want anything in life to change

Netball Mainland (NM) Board and staff are very much looking forward to 2020. 2019 has been a challenging and yet rewarding year as we undertook a major review of the organisation’s finances and staffing structure. After many years of financial struggle, the choice was made to look at every aspect of our business so that we could start to focus on where we could go as a business rather than how we were going to survive another year. The Board believes the process will lead to a stronger and more resilient organisation. The Netball New Zealand (NNZ) Board and staff have been very supportive of this approach and have had input at a strategic and operational level throughout the year.

I would like to thank the NM Zone Board members who have taken on roles over and above the normal Board responsibilities as part of the reviews and changes during the year. Darren Wright who chaired the Organisational Review Group; Jan Whitehead who has worked tirelessly to understand the finances and undertaken a budget development approach with staff; Tim Kerr who has supported the Commercial Manager and played a key role in this aspect of the business and Scott McCrea stepped down as Board Chair but has remained as a Board member. I would like to acknowledge the work Scott undertook as Chair from April 2018 until July 2019.

Anne Marett resigned as a Board Member in August 2019. Anne has been involved with Netball for many years and was on the NM Board from the inception of the Zones. She was the Board Chair until April 2018, providing a high level of support to the CEO and spent many hours working through the challenges faced.

In July 2019, Brigit Hearn (NM CEO), tendered her resignation after six years of working for the organisation. The Board is very appreciative of her efforts during this time. Sally Marr (Event Manager) and Jen Hooper (Performance Development Manager) also resigned during the year and we thank them for the effort and energy they put into their roles. Emma Hodgkin (Commercial Manager) resigned at the end of 2019 to take up a CEO role with another sporting organisation.

The organisational review has resulted in the CEO role being disestablished and replaced with two General Managers, one focused on Community Netball and Pathways, and the second focusing on the Performance arm and business of the sport. This structure will be in place as the organisation moves into the 2020 year. We are delighted to welcome Geni Tuilagi and Mal Humm into these positions and look forward to working with them in these roles.

11 Centre Forums We held our seventh annual Centre Forum in October 2019, a wonderful opportunity to share ideas, support each other and work together for the benefit of Netball in our Zone. To all those who attended this year’s NM Forum, we thank you for your input and feedback.

We also held a Special General Meeting in October to update our Centres on the reviews we had undertaken, the outcomes found and the approach going forward. We are grateful for the support our Centres have provided over the year and we look forward to building on our relationships with all Centres at both the Board and staff level.

The support of our sponsors and partners are key to the success of Netball in our Zone, from grass roots and to high performance. We acknowledge and thank every one of them for their contribution. Without their support we would not be able to continue to develop Netball in the Zone. Special thanks to Pure Oil - The Good Oil and Hellers for their support as naming rights sponsors and to our long-term sponsor SKOPE, who have been with us since the beginning of the National franchise competition. Our associate sponsors Avon City Ford and House of Travel (Christchurch City) alongside our many support partners are key to the success of our organisation and our Tactix and Beko teams.

We are indebted to our wonderful group of funders; in particular, New Zealand Community Trust (NZCT), The Rata Foundation, Lion Foundation, Mainland Foundation, Southern Trust, Sport Canterbury and Sport Tasman for their on-going support, allowing us to continue to provide existing programmes and develop new initiatives to grow Netball participation.

We have been very proud of the achievements of our Community and Performance teams. Across our Zone, the Community Team continued to develop stronger relationships with our 17 Netball Centres. We increased the number of Coach Developers, Umpire Coaches and Umpire Coach Developers and player development programmes across the Zone, getting a good geographical spread. NetballSmart has been integrated into all workshops, and been a component of all tournaments, representative teams, Tactix home games, alongside specific workshops in Centres, schools and clubs.

It was great to see 10 Netball Centres running the Muffin Break Year 7&8 Player Development Programme, with Selwyn Netball Centre having 70 participants taking part. We also had a great opportunity to help those affected by the March 2019 shooting through supporting the development and delivery, alongside the Canterbury Resilience Foundation, of a social netball tournament with 80 participants taking part.

After such a strong year in 2018 when The Good Oil Tactix finished in the top three after the regular season, contesting the finals for the first time in our 11-year history we were looking forward to going up another level in 2019. Unfortunately, in 2019 we were unlucky having two season ending injuries to Temalisi Fakahokotau and Erikana Pedersen - with neither able to take part in the season. We finished the 2019 ANZP in fourth equal position on points, managing to set a few new club records along the way: • Biggest winning margin • Most goals in one quarter • Most wins at home

12 Additional honours were earned by several of our players: • Silver Ferns – Kimiora Poi and Jane Watson • NZ A and Cadbury Series – Kimiora Poi, Temalisi Fakahokotau, Ellie Bird • Silver Fern Development – Ellie Bird, Erikana Pedersen and Kimiora Poi • NZ Secondary Schools –Olivia Burnham

Our Hellers Beko National Netball League team had a strong year finishing third and it’s great to see some of these players progressing to our top team.

For our General Managers, Geni Tuilagi (GM Community & Performance) and Mal Humm (GM Performance) funding remains a major challenge. However, with a focus on relationships, both within the team and with all our stakeholders, we look forward to a more positive outcome for our Zone going forward and I am excited to move into 2020 on this basis.

Our Board would like to thank all the staff. We recognise the challenges we have put on you during 2019 but appreciate that you have all stepped up to the challenge and the contributions you have made to making the Mainland Zone a great place to be for our Netball community.

JAN BARBER CHAIR AND ACTING CEO (JULY - DEC 2019)

13 COMMUNITY NETBALL REPORT

‘Titiro whakamuri kokiri whakamua’ Look back and reflect so you can move forward

The Zone community team would like to thank the NM Board, NM staff, NNZ staff, Netball Centres and Sport Canterbury, for all your support throughout the NM restructure. We appreciate your patience as we settled into the new organisational structure. As the Maori proverb indicates, it’s important to reflect on where we have been, before we can move ahead with the new future of NM.

14 MOTHER EARTH futureFERNS Firstly, I would like to acknowledge Tamika Green’s passion and relentless work to embed the junior philosophy within our Centres and schools. Tamika has been with the NM whanau for two years; however, her love of outdoor adventures saw her depart to Canada in June 2019. Prior to Tamika’s departure, she supported and guided 17 Netball Centres in the delivery of the Mother Earth futureFERNS programme and the Muffin Break Year 7 and 8 Player Development Programme (PDP): • 675 coaches attended the NNZ Foundation coach workshops • 10 Centres delivered the Muffin Break Year 7 and 8 PDP • 8,654 junior participants taking part in the Mother Earth futureFERNS programme • Mother Earth futureFERNS player satisfaction+ 94% • Quality of Foundation coach workshops – coach satisfaction 96%

UMPIRE DEVELOPMENT The Zone is very fortunate to have a group of people who have worked alongside us to advise and support the Centres with their umpire development plans. We would like to thank our Zone Umpire Development Group (ZUDG) for your guidance in the development of our game officials throughout the Zone.

We would also like to thank our Centre Umpire Co-ordinators for all the work that you do to help us achieve the following results: • 307 accredited umpires • Six new Zone Umpire Awards • 21 new accredited umpire coach and assessors • 107 accredited umpire coach and assessors • 6 new umpire coach developers

TECHNICAL OFFICIALS DEVELOPMENT We would like to thank our Zone Technical Officials Development Group (ZTODG) for their on-going support of the bench official development across the Zone. A further celebration was the number of bench officials appointed to NNZ domestic events:

COACH DEVELOPMENT 2019 started off with the NM bi-annual Coach Conference, which saw 60 participants invest in their growth and development as coaches. We were very lucky to have such high calibre speakers passing on their knowledge to our coaches.

2019 was also the year to introduce new initiatives to engage more learning opportunities for our community coaches such as informal workshops running alongside the Good Oil Tactix and Hellers Beko home games; coach development was also included alongside PDP and Centre representative coaches received support and guidance prior to their travels to National tournaments.

NETBALLSMART The NetballSmart programme continues to grow with new initiatives connecting to the wider Netball community. Thank you to Sharon Kearney (NetballSmart Programme Manager) and her NetballSmart Development Officers, we saw a huge success of injuries on the decline.

INTERNSHIP We were fortunate to have six students from the University of Canterbury and Lincoln University who took part in an internship programme at NM. These six interns assisted the Zone community team with the running of holiday programmes, as well as the delivery of community events.

16 COMMUNITY PROJECTS On 15 March 2019, Christchurch experienced further suffering with the shooting attack at two local Mosques. It was one of New Zealand’s darkest days and we will forever mourn the loss of 51 lives.

The Healthy Families team at Sport Canterbury approached NM to collaborate on a project to bring cultures and communities together, as well as to celebrate the lives lost during the attack. Sport played an important role during this time, as an outlet in times of stress and help build resilience and NM were more than happy to support a great initiative.

On 21 July 2019, NM supported the delivery of a fun Netball tournament for young women across Christchurch and saw diverse communities from the pakeha, pasifika, muslim and beyond, come together to break down the assumptions and learn more about each other. We thank Sport Canterbury and Canterbury Resilience for allowing this project to come together.

NETBALL MAINLAND CENTRE FORUM The annual NM Centre Forum was held on 12 October 2019, at the Airport Commodore Hotel in Christchurch. The purpose of the forum was to:

• Align NNZ, NM and the Centre’s overall plans for 2020 • To provide an opportunity for Centres to reflect and celebrate • To strengthen connections and relationships • To collaborate in opportunities for growth and development

17 We thank NNZ and Central Zone for your contribution in thought provoking discussions and we thank our Centres for making the time to reflect, connect and grow.

Geni Tuilagi COMMUNITY NETBALL MANAGER

18 JUNIOR NETBALL REPORT

MOTHER EARTH FutureFERNS Mother Earth continued to be the naming right sponsor for the futureFERNS junior Netball programme in 2019. We had a total of 8,654 junior Netball players across the Zone. According to the NNZ Mother Earth futureFERNS Survey, we had 94% satisfaction rate with the programme across the Zone.

In 2019, 675 junior coaches attended a Foundation coach workshop relevant to the level they were coaching.

MOTHER EARTH futureFERNS FESTIVAL DAY The Mother Earth futureFERNS Festival Day was delivered in collaboration with Marlborough Netball Centre on 25 March 2019. The participants enjoyed the coaching session with some of the Good Oil Tactix players, as well as great give-a-ways thanks to Mother Earth. We couldn’t have done any of this without the local support from Marlborough Netball Centre.

MUFFIN BREAK PLAYER DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME 2019 was the second year the Muffin Break Year 7 & 8 PDP was delivered. We had an increase of 10 Netball Centres use this extension programme to create greater opportunities for players in this age group: Christchurch, Selwyn, Marlborough, Hurunui, Mid-Canterbury, Nelson, South Canterbury, Malvern and Kaikoura. The programme had a 90% satisfaction rate in the Mainland Zone.

It was exciting to see Centres deliver the programme in a variety of ways to meet the needs of this age group. It was also fun to see elastics and hopscotch be brought back to life.

Netball Mainland Student Internship At the end of 2018, we recruited six interns from University of Canterbury and Lincoln University to carry out the 2019 holiday programme to the following Netball Centres who do not have paid development staff: Motueka, Kaikoura, Buller, West Coast, Hokitika, Hurunui, Malvern, Temuka, Geraldine and Waimate. Programmes were Waimate Holiday Programme spread across three holidays (January, April and July) and were fitted around the crossover between school holidays and university holidays. We continued to receive positive feedback from the players, parents and the Centres involved. 19

Our interns also undertook additional projects in relation to their specific studies, which empowered them to co-design and deliver the Hamner Springs Thermal Pools & Spa U15 Zone Championship, BeachNet secondary school competition, umpire workshop within secondary schools, Ara Fast5 tournament and led the NM Youth Advisory Group.

We would like to thank our interns for your passion and drive to lead and deliver Netball in our community. We wish you all the best in your future endeavours. Interns: Emma Goodard, Emma Vennell, Naomi Munro, Vicky Taggart, Georgia Thomson, Nicole Eastgage

YOUTH ADVISORY GROUP This year the NM, Youth Advisory Group (YAG), consisted of four members - a mixture of high school and University students - all involved in Netball at various levels and in different roles. We had a representative from University of Canterbury, Rangiora New Life School and Rangi Ruru College. We discussed topics such as the NNZ Youth Strategy and how we can bring this to life in the Mainland Zone, youth participation and ways to get those who are not active engaging in sport. This group will re-from for 2020 and be led by the Participation Lead.

20 COACH DEVELOPMENT REPORT

NETBALL MAINLAND COACH CONFERENCE 2019 started with the bi-annual NM Coach Conference, which saw 60 coaches in attendance at the Commodore Hotel in Christchurch. The theme of the conference was ‘The Art of Coaching’ and the speakers presented on: the season campaign, coaching at tournaments, self-awareness, building athlete relationships, injury management, game analysis and the well-being of coaches. The presenters, all experts in their fields provided such an informative day.

Alex McKenzie speaking about coach self-awareness

A Gala Dinner was held in the evening which was a great opportunity to relax, be wined, dined and entertained by some amazing high-performance coaches. It was a privilege for those attending to be able to hear stories and pearls of wisdom from the panel consisting of Maria Hassan (NZ Athletics), Marianne Delaney-Hoshek (Tactix head coach), Rachel Stead (NM coach & coach developer) and Mike Cron (All Blacks forward coach).

Marianne Delaney-Hoshek, Maria Hassan, Rachel Stead, Mike Cron

The Hellers Beko team trials were the following day, which also provided coaches with a great learning opportunity on the topic of selecting.

21 NNZ COACH DEVELOPERS Our group of coach developers grew in numbers in 2019 with 22 actively delivering in the role whilst some were on maternity leave or unavailable. To enable the coach developers to remain accredited, NM hosted two training days. In March, 19 coach developers came from across the Zone to spend a day training in Christchurch. The theme of the day was ‘Gold Nuggets of Facilitation’. For the first time umpire coach developers were included. Much was gained from sharing knowledge and well done to everyone for being brave extending their learning.

The second training day was attended by a smaller group of coach developers and the focus was on the wider role of coach developers in our Zone, not only facilitation of workshops. Our senior coach developers have been supporting of some of the new coach developers in their training by doing co- delivery of workshops and peer observations.

Coach Developers & Umpire Coach Developers – The Gold Nuggets of Facilitation

22 NNZ COACHING FRAMEWORK As a result of the growing network of coach developers across the Zone, most Centres are now able to provide the NNZ coaching framework to their coaches. This was reflected in the number of coach attendances at the modules, 500 in total. The coach developers are becoming more creative with the delivery of the NNZ workshops often including players or providing the workshop alongside other Netball events.

There also has been an increase in the amount of one on one support to coaches and this was achieved by the Zone providing Shooting workshop in Mid-Canterbury with Angela Mitchell training of coach developers in doing observations and giving feedback to coaches. NM provided support to coaches of Centre representative teams in the build- up to and also when away at the Zone and National tournaments.

COACH DEVELOPMENT AT PLAYER DEVELOPMENT SESSIONS The NM team has been working with some Centres to support their PDP sessions. These sessions provide an excellent learning opportunity for coaches, coaching alongside or observing other coaches, with the support of a coach developer. The Muffin Break Year 7&8 PDP delivered at 10 Centres provided a quality learning opportunity, not only for players but also for coaches and umpires.

Christchurch Netball Centre, Summer Development Camp

23 NNZ COACHING FOR SUCCESS ROADSHOW NM and Netball South Canterbury hosted the ‘NNZ Coaching for Success Roadshow’ in Timaru. The sessions were facilitated by Deb Fuller (Silver Ferns assistant coach), Charissa Barnham (NNZ Youth Development Manager), Sharon Kearney (Netballsmart Programme manager), Nic Kelly (PCQ coach and coach developer). It was an information packed evening with the coaches fully participating in the sessions.

STUDENT COACH SUPPORT 2019 saw NNZ piloting a student coach support programme. This was accompanied by the production of a 10-week online support programme and a comprehensive Community Coach Starter Resource containing many training session plans. These resources and many more are available on the NNZ Bracken learning site. NM once again worked alongside Sport Canterbury in the delivery of the ‘growing coaches’ programme.

We also continued to support the University of Canterbury students, studying a Sport Coaching degree, who have chosen Netball as their preferred sport. Two of these students obtained their CCA level 1 coaching award.

24 NETBALLSMART REPORT

2019 was the second official year for NetballSmart and it was encouraging to see its’ principles in action across all ages and levels throughout the Zone. The NetballSmart Development Officer was involved in Zone and Centre initiatives and events, practical and theoretical workshops and the development of new content to ultimately meet the key objectives of:

- Decreasing significant injuries within Netball Selwyn U15 Rep Session - Enhancing performance - Increasing awareness of and engagement in the NetballSmart Philosophy - Developing physically capable, competent movers In 2019, this was achieved through: - Dynamic Warm Up, UmpireSmart and DPC workshops - Intermediate and Secondary School visits - Practical sessions with both the Good Oil Tactix and the Netball Mainland Hellers Christchurch Netball Centre, Summer Development Camp Beko Team - Zone and Centre events including SISS, NZSS, PDPs, camps, mass warm-ups, pop-up sessions and Festival Days. - Coach Focus Groups

A highlight of 2019 was the roll out of several helpful new resources to compliment those that already exist. NetballSmart is now ‘much more than a warm-up’ and new resources include Core Control and Body Weight Strengthening programmes and SmartParent – a resource empowering parents to ensure their child has the best possible Netball experience. I look forward to continuing to work closely with members of the Netball Mainland community in 2020. NSDWU Workshop Hokitika

25 TACTIX HEAD COACH REPORT

It was another steady year for the Good Oil Tactix in 2019. Although we had two major injuries to Temalisi Fakahokatau and Erikana Pedersen, we still managed to win the second highest amount of games in history.

The Good Oil Tactix finished fourth equal on points after the regular season, and although we missed out on the playoffs there was plenty of great Netball to be enjoyed.

After the loss of Erikana in game one, it took us a little bit of time to get our flow on attack. We recruited Samon Nathan into the role who had not really played Wing Attack before and she developed in front of our eyes.

Season Achievements: • We had our biggest win in ANZ Premiership history beating the Magic by 12 goals and also scored 60 goals which was the third highest number in history • We also had our best ever quarter winning 22-9 vs Steel • Ellie Bird shot 579 goals which is the most in a season by a Tactix player • Jane Watson topped a number of defensive stats at the end of the season

Higher honours: • Jane Watson made the Silver Ferns and was part of the World Cup winning side • Kimiora Poi debuted for the Silver Ferns earlier in the year • Ellie Bird, Kimiora Poi and Temalisi Fakahokotau were members of NZA and the Cadbury series • Leanne Harris was the manager of NZA

In the community, the Good Oil Tactix players did over 400 hours in the community: • Coaching in Schools, clubs and Netball Centres (futureFerns, holiday programmes and Centre visits) • Visited most of our Netball Centres over the course of the season for either a holiday programme or coaching session • Sponsor promotions for NNZ and The Good Oil Tactix sponsors • Sessions for The Good Oil Tactix members

29 NETBALL MAINLAND UNDER 15 CHAMPIONSHIP The Hamner Springs Thermal Pools & Spa, Zone U15 Championship, was held at the Nelson Netball Centre. We had 21 teams enter the tournament from 10 different Centres. It was fantastic to see Centres bringing multiple teams, with Hokitika and West Coast forming a combined team, to create more opportunities for players to be involved at representative level.

A massive thanks to our naming right sponsor for the championship, Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools and Spa, for providing our umpires and Most Valuable Player awards.

31 AUDIT & RISK COMMITTEE REPORT For the year ending 30 November 2019

NM faced a challenging 2019 in the financial space. Early in 2019, the NM Board began a comprehensive review into the financial functions of the organisation. All income and expenditure were closely scrutinised by Board and staff, and those involved worked hard to implement change. Several systems were introduced to tighten controls across the organisation and to ensure greater clarity.

A cost to serve analysis was also done for all sponsorship agreements and the Board have set target maximums to ensure we realise a positive contribution to the organisation.

NNZ provided much appreciated support and guidance during this process. The 2019 financial result was a small surplus.

Communication and relationship management have been two areas of focus for the Board in 2019 and will continue to be priorities in 2020.

The NM board remain committed to ensuring this trend and the changes implemented are continued for 2020 and beyond.
