A’s News Clips, Thursday, August 25, 2011 Coco Crisp's second home run of the night gives A's extra-inning win over New York Yankees By Joe Stiglich NEW YORK -- The seventh inning rolled around, and Trevor Cahill was still pitching for the A's, a victory in itself given his past demons at Yankee Stadium. But it got better for the A's on Wednesday. They came from behind to take the lead, coughed it up and then pulled through in 10 innings for a 6-4 victory over the New York Yankees before a crowd of 47,271. In taking the first two of a three-game set, the A's snapped a string of 10 consecutive series lost to the Yankees, an Oakland record for most series lost in a row to any team. The A's hadn't even won consecutive games against New York since June 30-July 1, 2007, but manager Bob Melvin hoped his team wasn't satisfied leading into Thursday's series finale. "You win the first two, you gotta try to get greedy," Melvin said. "(But) it's a nice start to what is a tough road trip." Center fielder Coco Crisp earned top billing on a night when Oakland had several stars. He went 4 for 4 with two homers, including a go-ahead three-run shot off Rafael Soriano (2-2) in the 10th, and tied his career high with five RBIs. Third baseman Scott Sizemore enjoyed the first four-hit game of his career, and lefty reliever Brian Fuentes delivered a clutch outing, entering with men on the corners and no outs in the seventh and stranding both runners, keeping the A's within one run at the time.

Joe Ausanio Was Born on December 9, 1965 in Kingston
Name: Joseph John Ausanio Years: December 9, 1965 to Present Residence: Marlboro, New York Brief Biography: Joe Ausanio was born on December 9, 1965 in Kingston. Ausanio attended Jacksonville University from 1984 through 1988 where he studied Physical Education and Recreation and joined the school baseball team. Ausanio is the all time leader at Jacksonville University in saves and appearances. Ausanio pitched for nine years in professional baseball for five different organizations from 1988-1997. He was first drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 30th round of the 1984 free agent draft. In 1988, he was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 11th round of the free agent draft. In June 1988, he signed with the Pirates and remained in the organization from 1988-1992. Joe received his Major League debut in 1994 when the New York Yankees selected Ausanio and he got the opportunity to pitch in the major leagues for his home state team for two seasons. He had a 4 and 1 record with a 5.57 ERA and 51 strikeouts. Ausanio then signed with the New York Mets in 1996 before finishing his career with the Colorado Rockies in 1997. Recently, the New York Yankees have contacted Ausanio to throw knuckleball batting practice before facing Boston Red Sox knuckleballer Tim Wakefield. Ausanio played with Wakefield while with the Pittsburgh Pirates organization from 1988 through 1992. Currently Ausanio is the director of sales for the Hudson Valley Renegades and the head softball coach for the Marist College Red Foxes in Poughkeepsie. Joe currently resides in Marlboro with his family.

Our owner, Cal Ripken Jr., retired from baseball knowing that he wanted to give something back to the game that treated him so well. By bringing a Minor League Baseball franchise to the municipality that raised him, he did just that. Fifteen years later, the IronBirds are a strong representation of Harford County, Baltimore County and the DMV region. The IronBirds are a franchise dedicated to providing a truly world-class experience every man, woman and child that passes through the gates of Leidos Field at Ripken Stadium.
