New names noted after the issue for the relevant year has gone to press are included in later issues. Specialist periodical literature is scanned in full (as available at the libraries at ZSS and Z or received by the compilers). Also included is information supplied to the compilers direct. It is urgently requested that any reprints of papers not published in readily available botanical literature be sent to the compilers. — Validly published names are given in bold face type, accompanied by an indication of the nomenclatu- ral type (name or specimen dependent on rank), followed by the herbarium acronyms of the herbaria where the holotype and possible isotypes are said to be deposited (first acronym for holotype), accord- ing to Index Herbariorum, ed. 8 and supplements as published in Taxon. Invalid, illegitimate, or incor- rect names are given in italic type face. In either case a full bibliographic reference is given. For new combinations, the basionym is also listed. For invalid, illegitimate or incorrect names, the articles of the ICBN which have been contravened are indicated in brackets (note that the numbering of some regularly cited articles has changed in the Tokyo (1994) edition of ICBN).

Bruyns Bolus Herbarium Department of Biological Sciences University of Cape Town Rondebosch 7701 Pretoria 2014 S T R E L I T Z I A This series has replaced Memoirs of the Botanical Survey of South Africa and Annals of the Kirstenbosch Botanic Gardens, which the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) inherited from its predecessor organisa- tions. The plant genus Strelitzia occurs naturally in the eastern parts of southern Africa. It comprises three arbores- cent species, known as wild bananas, and two acaulescent species, known as crane flowers or bird-of-paradise flowers. The logo of SANBI is partly based on the striking inflorescence of Strelitzia reginae, a native of the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal that has become a garden favourite worldwide. It symbolises the commitment of SANBI to champion the exploration, conservation, sustainable use, appreciation and enjoyment of South Africa’s excep- tionally rich biodiversity for all people. Synonymy, nomenclature and origin of plant material were sorted. The lists of species grown in the last 122 years are constructed in such a way as to show that throughout that period at least 1423 taxa of succulent plants from 254 genera and 17 families inhabited the Garden’s cold glass- house collection. This document has been prepared by Mr James Grogan under contract with the CITES Secretariat.1 2. Background information can be found in two key CITES documents: CoP15 Doc. 55, submitted by the Management Authority of Switzerland, describes the issue under consideration in this report, whether certain genera of epiphytic cacti (seven as listed below) should be excluded from Appendix II based on the preponderance of artificially propagated compared to wild- collected specimens in international trade; IUCN Red List conservation status is reviewed, and trade data for gross exports of wild-collected specimens from range nations during 1975–2008 are presented; PC19 Doc. 14.1, prepared by the Chair of the Working Group on the Periodic Review with assistance from the Scientific Authority of Mexico, presents further analysis of trade data during 1998–2008 including the number of specimens of epiphytic cacti in trade that were artificially propagated, number of records and specimens that were wild collected, confiscated or seized, or of unknown origin during this period, and geographic ranges of species in question. Natural range, morphology & taxonomy of the epiphytic cacti 3. The Cactaceae are a New World family except for one species, the epiphytic Rhipsalis baccifera, which is also found in Africa, Madagascar and as far east as Sri Lanka. Seven genera are considered here: Disocactus, Epiphyllum, Hatiora, Lepismium, PseudoRhipsalis, Rhipsalis, and Schlumbergera. 4. These genera are grouped in two tribes of the subfamily Cactoideae within the Cactaceae family: Hylocereeae: Disocactus, Epiphyllum, PseudoRhipsalis Rhipsalideae: Hatiora, Lepismium, Rhipsalis, Schlumbergera 5.

  • VOLUME 8 NUMBER 30 NOTOCACTUS MUEGELIANUS N.N
WMM .1 VOLUME 8 NUMBER 30 NOTOCACTUS MUEGELIANUS n.n. FLOWERS From R. Christian. The plant which appears in the sketch on the front cover was purchased from among a batch of imports seen at Clive Innes’ nursery. There were quite a few plants on the staging that were about this size and shape. I hadn’t seen plants with this name previously, but found no particular difficulty in getting it established. It has produced a number of flowers at intervals from May to November. The plant is 170 mm (7”) high; at soil level it is 70 mm broad and 110 mm broad at its widest. There are 13 ribs, about 9 mm deep, with areoles 12 mm apart; the 12 radial and 4 central spines are an orange-red colour, about 12 mm long. The flowers open small and dark, grow larger and lighter as they age, or so it seems, the petals becoming 30 mm long, more or less a pale orange colour and the stigma is the same colour. In November the flowers stay open for three or four days. Comments on Noto. muegelianus ......... from D. W. Whiteley “Not long before your visit, the Nottingham Branch had been on an outing to Blackburn’s nursery. There was a good number of plants of this species in bud which were for sale and I think that most people on the coach must have bought one; I purchased one myself. As you could see, the flower does not seem to differ greatly from that of N. horstii, being a similar apricot colour.

I propose using meristem abstammen. Cephalien haben eine an - the term ‘cephalium’ only for a combination of dere Phyllotaxis als die vegetativen these criteria, i.e. flowering parts of cacti that Sprossabschnitte und sitzen der vorhandenen have confluent hairy or spiny areoles exterior to a vegetativen Phyllotaxis auf. Wenn blühende Ab - thick periderm, where these hairs, spines, and schnitte nur einen Teil der oben genannten Merk - periderms arise almost immediately below the male aufweisen, schlage ich vor, diese Strukturen shoot apical meristem, and with more hairs and als „Pseudocephalien“ zu bezeichnen. spines on reproductive parts than on photosyn - thetic parts of the shoot. Periderm development Introduction and confluent areoles preclude photosynthesis of Most cacti (Cactaceae) are peculiar plants, cephalia, which therefore lack or mostly lack even for angiosperms, with highly succulent stomata. There is almost always a discrete tran - stems, numerous highly lignified leaves aka sition from photosynthetic vegetative tissues to a spines, lack of functional photosynthetic leaves, non-photosynthetic flower-bearing cephalium, CAM photosynthesis, huge sunken shoot apical both of which arise from the same shoot apical meristems, and fantastic stem architectures meristem.
