DOI: 10.18195/issn.0313-122x.78(1).2010.285-298 Records of the Western Australian Museum, Supplement 78: 285–298 (2010). The original mammal fauna of the Pilbara biogeographic region of north-western Australia Alexander Baynes1 and Matthew C. McDowell2 1Research Associate, Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, Western Australian Museum, Locked Bag 49, Welshpool DC, Western Australia 6986, Australia. Email: [email protected] 2Mammal Section, South Australian Museum, North Tce, Adelaide South Australia 5000; and School of Biological Science, Flinders University of South Australia, PO Box 2100, Adelaide, South Australia 5001, Australia. Abstract – The hills and ranges of the Pilbara contain large numbers of caves, but only a miniscule proportion of these holds mammal remains that can be used to reconstruct the original (i.e. pre-European) fauna. During two fi eld seasons in 1985 and 2004, only 12 sites with bones were discovered. Material from three other sites lodged in the collections of the Western Australian Museum was also used. Thirty-six native mammal species plus the introduced House Mouse were identifi ed from cave surface remains. Compared with the fauna known from live-caught specimen records and the results of the Pilbara Biodiversity Survey, rodent species are comprehensively represented among the remains, dasyurid marsupials and bandicoots are moderately well represented, macropodoids are poorly represented, and bats (except two cave-roosting species) hardly represented at all. Results of this study indicate that the Central Rock-rat (Zyzomys pedunculatus), and probably the Golden-backed Tree-rat (Mesembriomys macrurus), originally occurred throughout the Pilbara ranges. Chuditch (Dasyurus geoffroii) is recorded from the Pilbara for the fi rst time, suggesting that it may have occurred in the lowlands, while Northern Quoll (D.

Email: [email protected] Abstract – We sampled scorpions in a systematic survey of 294 sites representing the major landform types across the arid Pilbara region of north-western Australia, an area of ca. 179,000 km2. We trapped two species of Isometroides, 10 of Lychas and 10 of Urodacus. All species were undescribed except one (U. megamastigus). Patterns of occurrence were similar to those found previously in arid Western Australia, in that temperature and soil characteristics seem to influence scorpion distributions; however, there were only weak correlations between species richness and sandiness of the soil, water availability, and annual temperature. In a classification of the sample sites based on occurrence of scorpion species, the major division in the dendrogram was associated with topographic and soil variables, while annual temperature, soil depth, ruggedness, total K and the presence of Acacia species were the five variables (of the 25 available) providing the best fit with the site matrix.

The assessment criteria detailed in the State Heritage Office’s guidelines entitled Criteria for the assessment of local heritage places and areas (Appendix 1) as recommended in State Planning Policy 3.5 Historic Heritage Conservation, has been the primary guiding document for the Heritage Inventory review for the Town of Port Hedland. The review has been undertaken in 2 stages. Stage One completed in December 2015 reviewed the 2007 inventory and determined a proposed Heritage List. Stage Two completed the entire review and produced this Draft report for Council consideration for public comment and contribution. The review references the thematic frameworks developed for the 1996 inventory, and the 2007 review of the Heritage Inventory to provide a check for a broad ranging inclusion of relevant places of heritage significance. No specific historical research has taken place for this review. The Town of Port Hedland’s Municipal Inventory of Heritage Places (2007 review) listed 60 places and sites in four categories.

PILBARA REGIONAL BIOSECURITY GROUP INC. ANNUAL REPORT 2017/18 Karratha Bait Racks – preparation of field prepared dried meat baits for regional aerial and ground baiting (Photo: Adam Robinson) 1 1. INTRODUCTION About the Pilbara Regional Biosecurity Group The Pilbara RBG is a not for profit association formed under the Associations Incorporation Act 2015, providing declared pest control programs for land managers, particularly in the pastoral zone. The associations’ primary purpose is the control of declared pests using funding from Declared Pest Rates paid by landholders on pastoral stations. These Declared Pest Rates funds are matched dollar for dollar by the WA Government to reflect the public benefit of controlling declared pest animals and weeds.
