Lindgren 2012 ii Abstract The risk regulation model proposes that people with low self-esteem (LSE), but not those with high self-esteem (HSE), react to potential threats to belonging by defensively distancing from their relationships. The present study hypothesized that self-focused rumination following threats to belonging, by forcing people with LSE to spend time considering their self-worth, would enhance this defensive distancing behavior. Participants were asked to recall self-relevant feedback they had received from someone they considered very close, and then completed a rumination or distraction task. Contrary to expectations, LSEs who were instructed to distract from threats to belonging reported more negative behavioral intentions towards their close other than those who were instructed to ruminate. However, in comparison to distraction, there was a trend for rumination to amplify LSEs’ negative affect following the recalled threats to belonging. Abstract This study examined the role of friendship sex composition, friendship history, and threat appraisals in the experience of jealousy about a romantic partner’s involvement in extradyadic friendships. Using a survey, 201 individuals responded to scenarios describing a romantic partner’s involvement in a significant friendship outside the romantic dyad. A partner’s involvement in a cross-sex friendship was associated with greater perceptions of threat to both the existence and quality of the romantic relationship than was a partner’s involvement in a same-sex friendship. Further, the specific forms of jealousy experienced about partners’ friendships were dependent on the threat appraisals individuals associated with the friendships. Appraisals of relational existence threat mediated the influence of friendship characteristics (i.e., sex composition and history) on sexual jealousy and companionship jealousy, while appraisals of relational quality threat mediated the influence of friendship characteristics on intimacy jealousy, power jealousy, and companionship jealousy. This study points toward the central role of threat appraisals in mediating associations between rival characteristics and various forms of jealousy about a partner’s friendships. Summary Zest is a positive trait reflecting a person’s approach to life with anticipation, energy, and excitement. In the present study, 9803 currently employed adult respondents to an Internet site completed measures of dispositional zest, orientation to work as a calling, and satisfaction with work and life in general. Across all occupations, zest predicted the stance that work was a calling (r ¼.39), as well as work satisfaction (r ¼.46) and general life satisfaction (r ¼.53). Zest deserves further attention from organizational scholars, especially how it can be encouraged in the workplace. Copyright # 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. This study examined the relationship between traumatic events, routine stressors linked to trauma, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms in emergency nurses. For this purpose, a sample of 147 emergency nurses completed the Traumatic and Routine Stressors Scale on Emergency Nurses (TRSS-EN) and the Posttraumatic Diagnostic Scale (PDS-5). Results of correlations and moderate multiple regression analyses showed that the emotional impact of routine stressors was associated with a greater number of PTSD symptoms, and, apparently, to greater severity, in comparison to the emotional impact of traumatic events. Furthermore, the emotional impact of traumatic events acts as a moderator, changing the relationship between the emotional impact of routine stressors and PTSD symptoms, in the sense that the bigger the emotional impact of traumatic events, the bigger the relationship between the emotional impact of routine stressors and PTSD symptoms. Virginia Ave. Reno, NV 89577 USA [email protected] Abstract This article features a review of communication scholarship about sex from the past two decades (2000-2020). A typo- graphic analysis of relevant research reveals 11 primary topic areas related to how interpersonal sexual communication is commonly researched in communication studies. Six of these topic areas are relationship-oriented in nature: flirting and initiation; pleasure and desire; sexual expectations; relational and sexual satisfaction; communication after sex; and negative aspects of sex and sexuality. Three of the topics are health-oriented in nature: sex education, especially in consideration of how parent-child talk happens in families; negotiation of safe sex practices; and sexual dysfunction. Finally, two of the topics are cultural in nature: social factors and influences; and media influences and representations. Scholarship is also reviewed in terms of theoretical commitments, with most research following sociopsychological or critical traditions but with a noteworthy number also embracing sociocultural or biological paradigms. -

CMcal Scholarship Research- based Practice with Women Who Have Had Miscarriages Kristen M. Swanson Purpose: To summarize a research-based description of what it is like to miscarry and to recommend an empirically tested theory of caring for women who have experienced miscarriage. Design: The research program included three phases: interpretive theory generation, descriptive survey and instrument development, and experimental testing of a theory-based intervention. Methods: Research methods included interpretive phenomenologE factor analysis, and ANCOVA. Findings: A theory of caring and a model of what it is like to miscarry were generated, refined, and tested. A case study shows one woman’s response to miscarrying and illustrates clinical application of the caring theory. Conclusions: The Miscarriage Model is a useful framework for anticipating the variety of responses women have to miscarrying. MacInnis, University of Southern California Abstract We examine the differential effects of anticipating shame vs. guilt on choice likelihood of a hedonic product. The results demonstrate that when offered a hedonic snack (chocolate cake) consumers who anticipate shame are significantly less likely to choose to consume it compared to those who anticipate guilt. Anticipating guilt also has a more circumscribed effect, impacting choice likelihood only for those consumers who are not attitudinally inclined toward the hedonic product. The results also show that anticipating guilt versus shame has different effects on anticipated happiness after lapses in self-control. Vowing to remember how bad her overeating made her feel, she put a note on the box of left-over cake from her daughter’s birthday party that reads “if you eat this, you will feel bad.” Two powerful negative emotions of self-condemnation are shame and guilt. While commonsense knowledge reminds us that these emotions are reactions to self-control failures, little is known about whether anticipating these emotions as a consequence of consumption will impact self-control. -

Cooley and Goffman on the Ubiquity of Shame Thomas Scheff (6 k words) Abstract. This essay proposes that shame may be one of the hidden keys to understanding our civilization: shame or its anticipation is virtually ubiquitous, yet, at the same time, usually invisible. C. H. Cooley’s idea of the looking glass self implies that shame and pride can be seen as signals of the state of the social bond. Theoretical work by Cooley and Erving Goffman imply ubiquity, and empirical studies by Norbert Elias and by Helen Lewis provide support. Elias’s and Lewis’s findings also suggest that shame is usually invisible; Elias stated this proposition explicitly. Like other emotions, such as fear, shame can be recursive, acting back on itself (shame about shame). In some circumstances, limitless recursion of shame may explain extreme cases of silence or violence. The psychologist Gershen Kaufman is one of several writers who have argued that shame is taboo in our society: American society is a shame-based culture, but …shame remains hidden. Since there is shame about shame, it remains under taboo. ….The taboo on shame is so strict …that we behave as if shame does not exist (Kaufman 1989). Kaufman’s phrase, shame about shame, turns out to have meaning beyond what he intended: just as fear can lead to more fear, causing panic, shame about shame can loop back on itself to various degrees, even to the point of having no natural limit. Recursion of shame will be discussed further below1. Suppose that shame is usually hidden, as suggested by the idea of taboo. -

Don't Ask, Must Tell- And Other Combinations Adam M. Samaha* & Lior Jacob Strahilevitz** The military's defunct Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy has been studied and debatedfor decades. Surprisingly, the question of why a legal regime would combine these particular rules for information flow has received little attention. More surprisingly still, legal scholars have provided no systemic account of why law might prohibit or mandate asking and telling. While there is a large literature on disclosure and a fragmented literature on questioning, considering either part of the information dissemination puzzle in isolation has caused scholars to overlook key considerations. This Article tackles foundational issues of information policy and legal design, focusing on instances in which asking and telling are either mandated or prohibited by legal rules, legal incentives, or social norms. Although permissive norms for asking and telling seem pervasive in law, the Article shows that each corner solution exists in the American legal system.
