Not only did UNLV lose four starters off its 2007 NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 team, but also the top player off the bench, who was the 2006-07 MWC Defensive Player of the Year (Joel Anthony – currently with the NBA’s Miami Heat). The 2007-08 squad was also without 62 percent of the scoring, rebounding and minutes played from the previous year’s team. Kruger also worked his magic with just a 10-man roster and won with a lineup that averaged 6-feet, 4.5-inches tall and whose tallest starter was only 6-foot-7-inches. Kruger, who earned his milestone 400th career win on Feb. 9, 2007, with a 68-51 victory over Colorado State at the Thomas & Mack Center, has led UNLV to back-to-back seasons with at least 27 wins for the first time since 1989-90 and 1990-91. In addition, UNLV has won 34 conference games over the last three seasons (10 in 2005-06, 12 in 2006-07 and 12 in 2007-08), which is the program’s highest three-year total since 1991-94. Longtime collegiate and NBA basketball coach Lon Kruger completed Kruger’s third season at UNLV catapulted the program back onto the his fourth year as the Runnin’ Rebels’ head coach in 2007-08, compiling an national stage.

Introduction - "The Environment" When is a contract not a contract? Where is job security as fleeting as the last seconds of a basketball victory? In what field is an employment contract broken as easily as made? None other than in the world of college coaching. At the commencement of the 1988-89 college basketball season, a total of 39 schools or approximately 13.4% of the 294 Division I institu- tions had new coaches at the helm.1 This compares with an all-time high of 66 new coaches or approximately 22.8% of Division I schools during the previous season.2 During the 1980s, approximately 384 coaching changes have taken place in Division I schools.3 Approximately 53 basketball coaches have changed jobs since the end of the 1989-90 season.4 The Amer- ican Football Coaches Association indicates that head football coaches re- main in NCAA Division I-A football programs for an average of only 2.8 years.5 The number of coaches employed at the 279 schools that have played in Division I Men's Basketball for all of the past 15 seasons include: Copyright 1991 by Martin J.

  • [Sports] Coach K Concerned About "Plowing Through" College
TOP STORIES MENU Coach K concerned about "plowing through" college basketball season amid worst of pandemic WRALSPORTSFAN.COM | 3 MONTHS AGO | 4 MINUTES, 21 SECONDS READ College basketball began its season amidst the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic, and it has been reflected in the chaotic start to the season. Some coaches even before the season began, like Rick Pitino (now at Iona), have urged the powers that be in college basketball to delay the start, especially with a vaccine starting to be rolled out nationwide. Former Duke assistant Jeff Capel, now head coach at Pitt, expressed his unease at playing in conditions where multiple programs have already had to put their basketball activities on pause due to COVID-19. After No. 10 Duke's loss to No. 6 Illinois in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge on Tuesday, Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski was asked about Capel's unease and he agrees that it "doesn't feel right" to be playing right now. "I don't think it feels right to anybody. I mean, everyone is concerned," Krzyzewski said. Krzyzewski has long advocated for there to be a singular head of college basketball, somewhat like a commissioner, to make important decisions for the good of the game. The NCAA leads college basketball, but it is a collection of individual institutions and decisions are generally made via committee. "We made an assessment, or - I'm not sure who leads college basketball. It's done by committee. You have an oversight committee; you have this committee. Anything that's led by committee is not agile in handling a situation," Krzyzewski said.
