It is commonly known as “Ajowan” and is cultivated as a spice crop. Ajowan essential oil has an array of various organic and inorganic compounds. The most important of all the components from Ajowan essential oil is thymol which contributes 39.1 % of total volume of essential oil. The important compound Thymol isolated from Ajowan has many pharmacological effects like antiseptic, antioxidant, antitussive, hypertensive activity, expectorant properties, abortifacient, antihelmintic activity and much more. Other Pharmaceutical uses of Ajowan essential oils are to cure cough, digestive disorders, tonsillitis, urticaria and infections with worms. Ajowan essential oil isolated from fruit parts have antiseptic, expectorant and be used against pulmonary disorders. The present review highlights some of major characteristics of important medicinal plant Ajowan and describes the traditional and new novel uses of this plant in our daily life. With these important pharmaceutical effects, Ajowan seeds, fruits and other plant parts can be used for more clinical trials in future. Khellin works by relaxing the smooth muscle of the ureter. It was, however, a chance observation in 1945 by G V Anrep, a pupil of both Pavlov and Starling, that led to the development from khellin of modern drugs for asthma and heart disease. Anrep was Professor of Pharmacology in Cairo and his technician who had severe angina got renal colic and treated himself with khella. When the man returned to work Anrep perceptively noticed that he no longer had angina and this stimulated him to investigate the effect of khellin on the heart. Using the heart-lung preparation Anrep measured the coronary blood flow in dogs and showed that khellin was an effective and selective coronary vasodilator. Then he did a clinical trial in patients with angina which gave favourable results. His seminal paper reporting these findings was published in the British Heart Journal (1946;8:171-7.) This stimulated research elsewhere; and in Belgium the work of R Charlier and J Broek- huysen, who prepared hundreds of compounds with emphasis on the benzofurane portion of khellin, led in 1961 to the synthesis of amiodarone. The name is derived from am, to indicate the presence of an amine function; iod, for the iodine moiety; and arone from ben- ziodarone, an earlier drug in the ketonic ben- zofurane group. Identification and Antioxidant Activity of Ammi Visnaga L. Polyphenols from the Middle Atlas in Morocco

Phytochemical screening was carried out to highlight the qualitative composition of the secondary metabolites contained in this plant. Also, the extraction of total polyphenols was carried out by maceration using hydromethanolic and hydroacetonic mixtures. Then, the fractionation of the crude extracts was conducted by liquid-liquid extraction using successively two organic solvents with different polarities: ethyl acetate and n-butanol. The polyphenols contents were spectrophotometrically estimated using the Folin-Ciocalteau method. It showed that the ethyl acetate fraction is more abundant in phenolic compounds than the other fractions. The qualitative analysis was performed by high-pressure liquid chromatography with U.V. and electrospray ionization coupled to mass spectrometry (HPLC/UV-ESI-MS), which confirmed the richness of this species in polyphenols and particularly in flavonoids, especially by the identification of kaempferol, rhamnetin, biochanin A, ammiol. These molecules belong to flavones, flavonols, and furochromones, which are also identified both in the form of genin and of heteroside. -

The objectives of this study were to screen the phytochemical constituents and antibacterial activities also to evaluate antioxidant property of the Ammi visnaga (L.) Lam. entire plant. Methods: The Ammi visnaga plant was phytochemically screened (acetone, methanolic and aqueous) for the presence of phytogenic chemicals and, their effect on 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl radical (DPPH) was used to determine their free radical scavenging activity. Broth microdilution method was applied to detect antibacterial activity and determine minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of aqueous and organic extracts of Ammi visnaga (L.). The antimicrobial activity was examined against 3 reference strains namely: Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923), Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 27853). -

In the Gulf region, the Ammi majus (A. majus) is used traditionally as a safe and sustainable herbal medicine to treat various chronic ulcers. A. majus extracts showed significant biological activity such as antiviral, antimicrobial, antioxidant, relaxant effect, cardiovascular effect, hypotensive etc. The synonyms of A. majus belong to this family showed the equivalent biological activity. The selected A. majus species and its few synonyms including wild species are available in the Southern part of Oman. The literature search showed that only few in vitro biological investigations were done on the selected species that is available in Oman. The plant extracts and its individual phytochemicals showed potential activity against different biological activity. More than fifty bioactive phytochemicals were isolated from the particular plant species but the main groups of phytochemicals that are potential against different biological activities are flavonoids and coumarins. However, in Oman, there are many basic research parameters related to biological activities such as essential oils, animal study and clinic studies are unidentified on the selected plant species. -

ABSTRACT Toothpick ammi (Ammi visnaga (L.) Lamarck, Apiaceae), a summer annual of Eurasian origin, commonly occurs along agricultural field margins in the Sacramento Valley of northern California, typically flowering from June to August. Observations during 1979-1984 yielded 65 distinguishable insect taxa attending the flowers, including 60 groups that were at least in part entomophagous. Peak attendances occurred for Braconidae, Ichneumonidae, Sarcophagidae, Sphecidae, Tachinidae, and Vespidae during early morning hours. Hay alfalfa (Medicago sativa L., Fabaceae) was grown in replicated plots with borders ofeither: (1) toothpick ammi, (2)common knotweed (Polygonumaviculare L., Polygonaceae), (3) prostrate pigweed (Amaranthus graecizans L.. Amaranthaceae), or (4) Clean-cultivated edges. Lam. (Apiaceae), a new neophyte for Croatia was found in several localities and natural habitats. At the altitude of 380–460 m above sea level, mostly in habitats disturbed by humans, the located populations were composed of numerous and vital specimens in blooms and with fruits. The gradual and successful integration of this species into the natural vegetation was noticed, particularly in grasslands of the associa- tion Brachypodio retuso-Trifolietum stellati Horvati} 1958 and macchia of the association Fraxino orno-Quercetum ilicis Horvati} (1956) 1958.
