  • Implacable Images: Why Epileptiform Events Continue to Be Featured in film and Television
Original article Epileptic Disord 2006; 8 (2): 103-13 Implacable images: why epileptiform events continue to be featured in film and television Toba Schwaber Kerson1, Lawrence A. Kerson2 1 Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research, Bryn Mawr College 2 University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, Philadelphia, USA Received September 26, 2005; Accepted February 13, 2006 ABSTRACT – Epileptiform events have been portrayed in film since 1900 and on television since the 1950’s. Over time, portrayals have not reflected medi- cine’s understanding of epilepsy. At present, it is unlikely that individuals who do not have a close relationship with someone with a seizure-disorder will witness a seizure. Because fictive and often incorrect images appear increas- ingly, many think of them as accurate depictions. The research addresses three questions in relation to these images: How do directors use the images? Why do uses of seizures in visual media not reflect contemporary scientific knowledge? Why have they persisted and increased in use? Data consist of material from 192 films and television episodes. The general category of seizures includes seizures in characters said to have epilepsy or some other condition, seizures related to drug or alcohol use, pseudoseizures and feigned seizures, and, a category in which, for example, someone is described as “having a fit.” The research demonstrates how epileptiform events drive the narrative, support the genre, evoke specific emotional reactions, accentuate traits of characters with sei- zures, highlight qualities of other characters through their responses to the seizures, act as catalysts for actions, and enhance the voyeuristic experience of the audience.

  • Campus Weekly International Programs' Nell Pynes Bids Farewell
Welcome to Campus Weekly International Programs’ Nell Pynes bids farewell Dr. Penelope (Nell) Pynes, departing Associate Provost of International Programs, welcoming participants to UNC Greensboro’s popular International Festival in 2018. Global engagement is a core value of UNC Greensboro. The global learning and global connections that Spartans have pursued, particularly over the past few decades, have imprinted international engagement onto UNCG DNA in a way that will enrich the campus life and global impact far into the future. Typically, around 25 faculty-led study abroad programs operate each year through the International Programs Center with more than 300 students studying abroad and an additional 220 students going on exchange programs, and in return, the same number coming from abroad to study on UNCG’s campus. | 1 How on Earth (throughout Earth) has all this been facilitated? In large part, by Dr. Penelope Pynes, who has played a leadership role in international programs at UNCG for more than 20 years. She will step down from her position as Associate Provost of International Programs on June 30, and will be honored with a Zoom virtual celebration on June 2. Pynes joined UNCG in 1991 as a faculty member in the Department of German and Russian, just as the International Programs Center was being founded. She served as director of Study Abroad and Exchanges from 2001 to 2008, and since then as associate provost. She has spearheaded many initiatives, including co-chairing UNCG’s ACE Internationalization Lab (2010-12) and most recently serving as the director of our Global Engagement Quality Enhancement Plan (GE QEP), a direct extension of the ACE Lab experience.

  • Liminal Identity in Contemporary American Television Science Fiction
Liminal Identity in Contemporary American Television Science Fiction Rhys Owain Thomas Submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy School of Film, Television and Media Studies University of East Anglia August 2014 This copy of the thesis has been supplied on condition that anyone who consults it is understood to recognise that its copyright rests with the author and that use of any information derived there from must be in accordance with current UK Copyright Law. In addition, any quotation or extract must include full attribution. Rhys Owain Thomas Student Number 4566211 Film (Research) R1W62012 Abstract This thesis examines the foregrounding of a particular type of liminal human protagonist in contemporary American television Science Fiction. These protagonists, which I have termed the ‘unliving,’ exist in-between the realms of life and death, simultaneously both alive and dead whilst occupying an indistinct middle- ground. I examine how the liminal nature of these protagonists has been used as a means of exploring various aspects of personal identity during the early years of the twenty-first century. Developing anthropologist Victor Witter Turner’s work, in which he argued for the universal occurrence of liminality in cultural, political, economic and social contexts, I argue that the use of liminal protagonists in American television Science Fiction constitutes a demonstrable trend. Although they are to be found in ever-increasing numbers in (and outside) the genre, their growing presence and significance have yet to be properly discerned, studied and appreciated. I analyse the use of these unliving protagonists in four key texts: Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (The Halcyon Company/Warner Bros.

  • Masters of Cyber-Religion
P a g e | 120 http://jrmdc.com Masters of Cyber-Religion: The Female Body as God’s “Interface” in the TV Series Caprica Jutta Wimmler European-University Viadrina Abstract The article proposes that the short-lived science fiction series Caprica (2009–2010) espoused a rather atypical ideology that was based on the prominence of women and femininity in the narrative. Through women, the series merged science and religion, body and mind, human and machine and established a moral code based on respect for those usually “othered” in the genre. The narrative accomplished this by consciously employing and then re-arranging western gender stereotypes, which led to the emergence of a specifically feminine approach to science that was, amongst other things, also religious. This combination had subversive potential because of the series’ premise that God actually exists and is actively involved in human/cyborg affairs. Women emerged as points of contact on behalf of this God who pitted them against rationalized and universalized male science. About the Author: Jutta Wimmler studied history and religious studies at the University of Graz and received her PhD in history in 2011. She is currently employed at the department of comparative European economic and social history at the European University Viadrina in Frankfurt (Oder), Germany.
