2021 ICM Contest 2021 Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling® Press Release—April 23, 2021 COMAP is pleased to announce the results of the 23nd annual influence between artists, and to identify revolutionaries. The E Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling (ICM). This year 16,059 teams Problem asked teams to create a more equitable and sustainable food representing institutions from sixteen countries/regions participated in system. Students were also required to consider the timeline of the contest. Nineteen teams were designated as OUTSTANDING implementation and the obstacles to change for a region. The F representing the following schools: Problem considered the future of higher education by asking students to create a model to measure the health and sustainability of a national Beijing Normal University, China system of higher education. During that time, teams of three students 3521 Problem E (22%) researched, modeled, and wrote a solution to an open-ended 6987 Problem F (43%) interdisciplinary modeling problem. The 2021 ICM was an online 19 Outstanding Winners (<1%) contest, where teams registered and obtained contest materials through 301 Finalist Winners (1%) COMAP’s ICM Website. 1191 Meritorious Winners (7%) ICM teams chose one of the following three problems: The D problem 2909 Honorable Mentions (18%) involved understanding musical influence of artists and how it may 11036 Successful Participants (69%) appear in the attributes of the music they create. Using the four data 43 Unsuccessful Participants (<1%) sets provided, students developed a model to measure influence of 551 Disqualified Teams (3%) artists as well as similarity of music. They used these two 9 Not Judged (<1%) measurements to understand musical evolution within a genre, musical ICM is associated with COMAP’s Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM), which was held during the same weekend. ICM is designed to develop interdisciplinary problem-solving skills in science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM) and the humanities, as well as competence in data science and written communication. Over the years the ICM problem topics have included environmental science, biology, chemistry, political science, operations research, information science, public health, sports analytics, and network science. Each team is encouraged to include team members from a range of disciplinary and interdisciplinary interests in applied problem solving and modeling. Major start-up funding for the ICM was provided by a grant from the National Science Foundation (through Project INTERMATH) and COMAP. COMAP's Mathematical Contest in Modeling and Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling are unique among modeling competitions in that students work in teams to find a solution. Centering its educational philosophy on mathematical modeling, COMAP uses mathematical tools to explore real-world problems. It serves the educational community as well as the world of work by preparing students to become better informed—and prepared—citizens, consumers, workers, and community leaders. This paper attempts to understand this change of direction from the central state’s perspective. By examining the dynamics of the basketball and soccer markets, it discovers that while the deregulation of basketball is a result of persistent bottom-up effort from the private sector, the recentralization of soccer is a state-led policy change. Notwithstanding the different nature and routes between these reforms, in both sectors, the state’s aim is to restore and strengthen its legitimacy within the society. Amidst China’s economic stagnation, the regime hopes to identify sectors that can drive sustainable growth, and to make adjustments to its bureaucracy as a way to respond to the society’s mounting demand for political modernization.

Abramson Department of Urban Design and Planning Associate Professor Jeffrey Hou Department of Landscape Architecture Since China initiated its pro-market reform in 1978, the way Chinese cities are governed has undergone a profound change. Central to such change is the fundamental revival of urban land as economic assets, because of which making plans for future land use has become an increasingly important government function and therefore the practice of urban planning (chengshi guihua) has begun to expand and take shape as a profession. However, with the expansion and professionalization of Chinese planning, there is also a growing criticism against the way urban planning has been developed into a development- and profit-driven profession. This dissertation thus aims to examine the evolutionary process of Chinese planning, through which the key factors causing such contradictory development are identified: First, since the 1994 tax sharing reform, the government at the local level has been put under intense pressure to increase its reliance on land transfer revenue and pursue land development. Increasingly, the role of urban planning has been limited to serving as a tool to facilitate the process, leaving other concerns largely unaddressed.

Read Full License Page 2/22 Abstract Manganese doped aluminum nitride (AlN:Mn) nanowires were fabricated by direct nitridation of Al and Mn mixed powders. The as-synthesized AlN:Mn nanowires were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Raman, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The measurements reveal the successful incorporation of Mn2+ ions into AlN nanowires. The magnetic and optical properties of the AlN:Mn nanowires were studied using vibrating sample magnetometer and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The AlN:Mn nanowires exhibit room temperature ferromagnetic behavior and a red emission band centered at 597 nm corresponding to 4 4 6 6 2+ the T1( G)- A1( S) transition of Mn . The abnormal thermal quenching behavior and long afterglow feature are investigated through the temperature dependent emission and the afterglow spectrum. The thermoluminescence curve shows that AlN: Mn nanowires have a wide trap distribution, which leads to the abnormal thermal quenching behavior and persistent luminescence.

    'A6G*+B *+) THE RECORD OF THE LANDS OF YUE Introduction !is chapter describes key sites in the kingdom of Yue, including King Goujian’s capital, which was one of China’s oldest recorded planned cities.1 !is chapter emphasises the impact King Goujian had on the land- scape of this region: virtually every building mentioned is said to have been erected either for his personal use or as part of the war e"ort he ini- tiated to defeat the kingdom of Wu. In this text the authors repeatedly link landscape features of northern Zhejiang province to events from the life of the greatest king of Yue. However these attributions (in the absence of further evidence) must remain largely speculative. Numerous geograph- ical features and ancient buildings south of the Yangtze river have been linked to famous ?gures from the con#ict between Wu, Yue and Chu, and sometimes these attributions have been conclusively disproved.2 It is important to stress that unlike King Helü’s capital (modern Suzhou), 1 !e site of King Goujian’s capital is now the city of Shaoxing in Zhejiang province. !e name Shaoxing commemorates a turn in the fortunes of the Southern Song dynasty. In 0015, the capital of the Northern Song dynasty Bianliang ϰΔ (now known as Kaifeng –ݶǭ) fell to the Jurchen Jin dynasty. !e new emperor, Song Gaozong LJࠆlj (r. 0012 0051), moved south to evade capture, and established his capital at a series of southern dž (now known as Hangzhou ʹș), Pingjiang ȳϭ (modernט cities, including Lin’an ș) and Yuezhou ۚș (Shaoxing).
