2 President’s Corner for February 2015

Karen King and Melissa Woodbury

Those of you who were able to attend the January meeting at the Prodigal Son know what interesting presentations on STEM Programs were given by Josh Ego and Patricia Dawson. That, and suggestions from AAUW State and National, have led the Board to look into sponsoring a girl (or girls) to attend a STEM workshop or camp. We will keep you posted on that.

Our February program will be one of our annual favorites – a presentation by students from Griswold High School in Helix on their “History Film Projects.” We have been amazed and informed by these documentaries and hope that everyone will try to be at the Prodigal Son on Saturday, February 7, at 11:00 a.m. to see what the students have produced this year.

On another subject, you should know that we are still involved with the Pioneer Park Rebuild, both physically and financially. This month, Marty, Karen, and David King made a presentation to the Pendleton City Council that led to the Council’s approval to go ahead with the next, and last, phase of the reconstruction: a picnic pavilion on the west side of the playground. This has been a long and complicated road, but we hope to get everything done in 2015, including the walk-way around the perimeter of the playground and new seating and water fountains. We will keep you informed as we go along.

See you on February 7. This would be a great opportunity to invite a friend to a meeting.

3 AAUW Pendleton Branch January Membership Meeting Minutes January 10, 2015

The meeting was called to order by co-President Karen King at 12:23 p.m. at the Prodigal Son Brewery & Pub following a program meeting on Umatilla County STEM programs, presented by Patricia Dawson of the OSU Extension office and Josh Ego of Umatilla School District.

The minutes from the December meeting were accepted as emailed.

Dianne Barnes gave the Treasurer’s Report. The branch has $831 in the checking account and $7,240 in the savings account. Dianne also has tax letters for all members; contact her to get yours if you didn’t make it to the meeting.

Kathy Ward reported on the grapefruit sale. The branch made a profit of $3,697.15 for the 2014 fundraiser, selling 100 boxes fewer than we sold last year. Kathy also requested volunteers to take on more names for their call lists for 2015, as we had new sales and Mary Johnson is moving away. A call was made for ideas tor boost sales next year, including expanding our sales efforts to outlying communities (Athena, Weston, Adams, Pilot Rock, Helix, etc.)

Marty King reported that the State Historic Preservation Office has given us the go-ahead to site the benches, picnic shelter and landscaping just west of the pathway on the outside of the main playground structure. We will be making a presentation of our recommendation for the shelter to the Pendleton City Council meeting on January 20.

Renee Struthers discussed upcoming programs, including the Griswold High School documentaries in February; Melissa Woodbury and Sharon Vincent discussing travel in Cuba from different perspectives in March; and a national speaker from D. A. Davidson in April, tied in with Equal Pay Day, talking about investment strategies for women and how to make the most of our money for the long term.

Renee also updated the group about possibilities for using our STEM funds to support local middle school girls. She has contacted the Pendleton and Nixyaawii schools about possibly helping send girls to the EOU Girls in Science camp next fall, but hasn’t heard anything from anyone yet. She also will get together with Patricia Dawson to discuss possible ways to support girls in the Umatilla County 4-H STEM programs (OSU Extension is involved with sending students to the Girls In Science camp as well as several other science camps, so this would be a good fit for the branch).

Karen reminded everyone that the first EO Forum presentation is Tuesday, January 13, at 7 p.m. at Blue Mountain Community College. Bridget Farley will discuss Vladimir Putin and Russia. Cost to attend is $6 per person if you are not a member.

The meeting was adjourned at 12:36 p.m.

Respectfully submitted, Renee Struthers (for Judy Witte)
