    TIPPERARY HISTORICAL JOURNAL 1994 © County Tipperary Historical Society www.tipperarylibraries.ie/ths [email protected] ISSN 0791-0655 The Wages Book of a Fethard Farmer, 1880-1905 By Cormac 6 Grada This note is based on the wages book of a prominent farmer from the Fethard area, Michael O'Donnell. The wages book, which is in very good condition, contains over 200 pages measuring approximately 13 inches by 6 inches. It is currently in the possession of Michael O'Donnell's grandson, Brian O'Donnell of Garrinch, Fethard.' The book covers a 20-year period between the early 1880s and the early 1990s. All the entries seem to have been made in Michael O'Donnell's own hand. Michael O'Donnell was born in 1851. The eldest of a family of seven, he seems to have acquired the farm at Bannixtown on his marriage; his wife was Maria Josephine, daughter of John Shea of Bannixtown. O'Donnell's father lived on in nearby Kilsheelan until 1895 and his mother until 1902. Michael O'Donnell himself survived to a ripe old age, dying aged 82 years in January 1933. Some years before his death he moved home from Bannixtown to Byrne's Kiln. He handed the farm and house at Bannixtown over to his youngest son Bryan. Bannixtown is situated on good land about four miles east of the town of Fethard, facing south towards Slievenamon. The wages book gives several hints of Michael's prosperity. On a fly-leaf it reports that in 1894 he insured his life for £500, and his houses etc.

McGraw, Ph.D. [email protected] Revised: November 8, 2018 Introduction The first portion of this paper is based on information from the paper “Descendants of Philip McGrath,” provided to the author by Con Ryan of Dublin. Ryan’s paper was in the form of a short narrative and contained gravestone transcriptions and photos from Clonoulty Cemetery in the village of Clonoulty (Clonoulty Churchquarter townland).     The War of Independence in County Kilkenny: Conflict, Politics and People Eoin Swithin Walsh B.A. University College Dublin College of Arts and Celtic Studies This dissertation is submitted in part fulfilment of the Master of Arts in History July 2015 Head of School: Dr Tadhg Ó hAnnracháin Supervisor of Research: Professor Diarmaid Ferriter P a g e | 2 Abstract The array of publications relating to the Irish War of Independence (1919-1921) has, generally speaking, neglected the contributions of less active counties. As a consequence, the histories of these counties regarding this important period have sometimes been forgotten. With the recent introduction of new source material, it is now an opportune time to explore the contributions of the less active counties, to present a more layered view of this important period of Irish history. County Kilkenny is one such example of these overlooked counties, a circumstance this dissertation seeks to rectify. To gain a sense of the contemporary perspective, the first two decades of the twentieth century in Kilkenny will be investigated. Significant events that occurred in the county during the period, including the Royal Visit of 1904 and the 1917 Kilkenny City By-Election, will be examined. Kilkenny’s IRA Military campaign during the War of Independence will be inspected in detail, highlighting the major confrontations with Crown Forces, while also appraising the corresponding successes and failures throughout the county. The Kilkenny Republican efforts to instigate a ‘counter-state’ to subvert British Government authority will be analysed. In the political sphere, this will focus on the role of Local Government, while the administration of the Republican Courts and the Republican Police Force will also be examined.

Retail Town Centre Retail Forums are currently in operation in 6 of the 9 towns and are actively Initiative supported by the Municipal Districts. Various activities are being undertaken including running of festivals; marketing initiatives, town regeneration initiatives and surveys. A marketing effort/ shop local campaign was developed to promote more local shopping including a logo, social media channels and an online marketing campaign. Thus campaign will begin again in the run up to Christmas to promote ‘Shop Local’ The Christmas Retail Support Grant Scheme was recently advertised in all local media with details circulated to stakeholders and previous beneficiaries. The 2018 scheme attracted 31 Applications. Grant offers will issue in the coming week to all successful applicants.
