On January 13, 1913, one hundred years ago, twenty-two ambitious and energetic undergraduate women at Howard University pledged to do something to make the promise of democracy more real to Black Americans. This “something” was the founding of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority which today is an organization of over 250,000 women located in more than 950 chapters throughout America, England, Japan, West Germany, the Bahamas, Bermuda, Republic of Korea, and the Virgin Islands. The Albany (GA) Alumnae Chapter was chartered in 1949 as Gamma Psi Sigma Chapter through the visionary leadership of ten Albany women. Eleven years later, the chapter’s name was changed to the Albany Alumnae Chapter and to the Albany (GA) Alumnae Chapter in 1976. Five chapter members have distinguished themselves at the national and regional levels. The chapter honors and salutes the following charter members: The late Dr. Jeanne L. Noble, who served four years (1958-63) as the 12th National President of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. The late Dr. Anne Greene Stroud, who served as the Southern Regional Director for four years (1970-1974). Nellie Roulhac chaired the National Personnel Committee. Dr. Emma Remhert was a candidate for the Office of Regional Director and Emma Bell Clas Latimer was a noted pianist in the state of Cleveland, Ohio and has relocated back to the “Good Life City”. All of the above chartered members have served on various national and regional committees. Charter members that have entered into Omega Omega Chapter are Leah Griffin Berry, Nola Weston, Vesta Pruitt, Blanche Staley, Mamie Bynes Reese, Dr. Anne Greene Stroud, and Dr. Jeanne Noble. The following presidents of the Albany (GA) Alumnae Chapter have sustained this rich heritage of demonstrated leadership: Dr. Nellie Roulhac, Mamie Bynes Reese, Dr. Anne Greene Stroud, Andolia Eaton, Odessa Hamilton, Richardine Chadwell, Sophranie Steele, Sharlotte Simmons, Rubye Hampton, Dr. Velma Grant, Dr. Alma Reese, Frances Davis, Bernice Berry, Kathleen Caldwell, Pearle Booker, Joyce Chaney, Geraldine W. Hudley, Dr. Elaine Baker, Viola W. Brooks, Dr. Linda G. Solomon, Gloria W. Jefferson, Shirley S. Brown, and presently, Vamella Lovett. Through the leadership of the chapter presidents, the Albany (GA) Alumnae Chapter exists or served as a vital force in nine counties of Southwest Georgia: Baker, Calhoun, Crisp, Dougherty, South Lee, Mitchell, Randolph, Tift, and Worth County. Delta Rho Chapter, the local collegiate chapter, was established November 22, 1952 on the campus of Albany State College presently known as Albany State University. Delta’s Five Point Program focus attention on the Sorority’s purpose throughout the community. Jabberwock, the major biennial fundraising effort, facilitates the awarding of thousands of dollars to promote academic scholarships. The chapter addresses the concern for excellence in education with scholarships and grants to individuals along with donations to chapters in the form of “seed grants”. Scholarships are awarded to seniors from each of the local high schools in counties where there are active chapter members. A tuition scholarship is awarded annually to an undergraduate Delta Rho chapter member of junior status at Albany State University. Locally, the chapter participates with the American Red Cross Blood Drive, March of Dimes, voter registration, SAT preparation, serves as a Partner In Excellence with Magnolia Elementary School, American Diabetes Association, Habitat for Humanity, Relay for Life & American Cancer Society, Women Wear Red Day Luncheon with the Dougherty County Health Department, Women Health Conference with Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital, and provide support for numerous other local charities. The chapter launched the “EMBODI” program during the fall of 2011 for young African American males between the ages of 11-17 in Albany and Tifton. The Albany (GA) Alumnae Chapter & Delta Rho Chapter of Albany State University hosted the GA. State Cluster for the Southern Region in October 19-20, 2001 and November 9-11, 2007 in the city of Albany, GA. Albany (GA) Alumnae Chapter Presidents 1949- 1951 Nellie G. Rouhlac 1951-1953 Mamie B.
