To fulfill its pledge to create one of the top 50 places to live The need worldwide, and set the benchmark for 21st century living in India, Lodha To fulfill the goal of creating Palava as Group needed smart approaches to build and manage the infrastructure one of the top 50 most livable cities in the world, Lodha Group needed the ability to for Palava City—a Greenfield development located near Mumbai. gather data from sensors and systems to drive automation, analysis and planning. Abhishek Lodha, Managing Director at Lodha Group, explains: “Palava The solution was born out of a vision to create a city of opportunity that would Working with IBM® Global Business offer unparalleled quality of life to its citizens, and also be a sustainable Services® to see how technology could ecosystem: nurturing business, creating jobs, and delivering growth.” enable joined-up operations across all city domains, Palava City is deploying an advanced analytics and automation Shaishav Dharia, Development Director at Lodha Group, adds: “To solution. build this first-of-a-kind city in India, we are planning decades ahead, embedding intelligent, data-driven systems in the city’s design and The benefit 360-degree view of city functions powers infrastructure. Building on strong foundations “We looked at who could provide global leadership in designing cities for tomorrow’s needs. We determined that IBM has been at the forefront in this field for a number of years, and we wanted to tap into their expertise and integrate it with our local know-how of how things work in India,” recalls Abhishek Lodha. Becoming a smarter city requires careful planning and the adaptation of global lessons to local requirements. “IBM Global Business Services enabled us to tap into their years of experience with other cities globally and integrate that with our local know- how across all the different domains of city life,” says Abhishek Lodha, Managing Director at Lodha Group. IBM Analytics Construction / Architecture / Engineering Following a pure consulting exercise with IBM Global Business Services Solution components that looked at requirements and options across multiple city domains— including housing, transport, public safety, employment, education, Software leisure and utilities—Lodha Group set out to build a central operations • IBM® Intelligent Operations Center hub that would draw real-time data from multiple sensors and systems to Hardware enable rules-based automation and analytics. • IBM Power® • IBM System Storage® “Our vision for the future of Palava City is based around three pillars: Services Participative Governance, Intelligent Operations and Public Safety,” • IBM Global Business Services® comments Abhishek Lodha. “For the first pillar, we are building a service • IBM Global Technology Services® that uses mobile and social technology to help citizens provide feedback to city officials, report issues and request new services. For the Intelligent IBM Business Partner • VDA Infosolutions Pvt. Ltd. Operations pillar, we are integrating multiple domain solutions across energy, water, transportation, public safety and smart cards into a single command and control center. This is where we monitor the health of the city and take coordinated, multi-agency action to address emerging issues.” He adds, “For Public Safety, the third pillar, we will take advantage of the command and control center to enable tight coordination between public safety agencies based on real-time monitoring of incidents and early warnings of potential problems derived from predictive analytics.” As the city authorities gather operational data over time—from sensors, from public systems and databases, and from utility providers—powerful analytics tools will help predict and address issues such as traffic congestion or flooding. Smarter Government Boosting the economy with advanced big data analytics Instrumented Rich data from multiple types of sensors, CCTV cameras and alarm systems—and from the power and water grids—is channeled into a single data warehouse for analysis, automation and decision support. Interconnected Pooling data on roads, buildings, citizens and city services into a single point of intelligence, Palava City by Lodha Group gains a unified view of citywide operations, enabling smooth collaboration and shared planning. Intelligent Data-driven automation enables smart services that adapt to changing citizen needs, while deep analytics provides valuable insight to drive effective planning of future city services and infrastructure. 2 IBM Analytics Construction / Architecture / Engineering Says Shaishav Dharia: “IBM helped us to shape our vision of Palava City and to translate our ideas into practical solutions. One very important “Harnessing big data parameter for us was time. We wanted to hit the ground running by enables almost real-time automating the management of the city from day one, instead of creating feedback for citizens and a lot of temporary manual processes. As the platform for our command and control center, IBM Intelligent Operations Center provided a helps in urban planning pre-integrated solution for city management, with a host of ready-made processes.” business processes. It was then a matter of configuration, rather than a complex customization and integration exercise.” — Abhishek Lodha, Managing Director, Lodha Group Safety first To support Palava City from the ground up, IBM helped Lodha Group develop a conceptual framework that integrates multiple city agencies and harnesses advanced analytics to provide a unified view of all city functions. As a result, departments can collaborate and share insights to improve the living experience for citizens. Public safety and security was the first area of the new development to benefit from the command and control center. Using geographic information systems (GIS) technology to map the entire city, Lodha Group integrates geo-tagged data from CCTV cameras, alarms and sensors, sharing information seamlessly with public service agencies to help them handle all types of emergency situations. “Everything related to public safety is hooked into the command and control center, including our 911 emergency number and a live view of the emergency response,” says Abhishek Lodha. “In the near future, we will integrate digital signage on the streets, so that we can push data and advice back out to citizens to help keep them safe.” Efficient utilities To support uninterrupted services for Palava’s growing population, the next stage of the project is to incorporate all utilities—water, electricity, communications—as well as the public and private transportation network into the command and control center. “With live data on the usage of water and electricity, we can automatically adapt supply to meet changing patterns of demand, for greater efficiency and lower costs,” says Abhishek Lodha. “And with powerful analytics, we can forecast how much energy we need to provision in the coming years, ensuring that we make the right infrastructure investments in a timely and efficient manner. From a management point of view, the solution brings all important functions and data streams into a single view and a single version of the truth, which makes it easier to see the big picture and make the right decisions for the city.” 3 IBM Analytics Construction / Architecture / Engineering In the near future, Lodha Group will also integrate Palava’s asset management into the command and control center, enabling city “Working with IBM has managers to introduce preventative maintenance of assets such as street given us the foundations lights and charging points for electric vehicles. “We can see a future for a truly intelligent in which all city assets are geo-tagged and contain smart sensors that constantly report to us on their status and condition,” says Abhishek city.” Lodha. “Our command and control center is already prepared for the Internet of Things, and we are well positioned to capture and act — Abhishek Lodha, Managing Director, Lodha intelligently on all of the data that this will produce. Ultimately, this will Group help us to create new value for citizens, improving our engagement with them and enhancing our operations.” Empowering citizens through better engagement To allow better communication between Palava City’s administration and its citizens, the Participative Governance pillar offers citizens a platform that harnesses mobile and social technologies to give and receive feedback on services and amenities. This enables city officials to respond more quickly to citizens’ concerns, and manage city resources more effectively. “Citizens can reach us without visiting our offices,” comments Shaishav Dharia. “We can obtain feedback instantly; giving people a voice and helping us address problems more proactively.
