Saint Patrick’s Cathedral [Catholic]

The imposing twin spires of the Catholic Cathedral overlook the City on an elevated site. It was on this hill on the17th March 1840 that the foundation stone for Saint Patrick’s Catholic Cathedral was laid by Archbishop Crolly. It was over 60 years before the Cathedral was completed, with consecration on 24th July 1904.

No 5 Vicars Hill Built in 1772 as the Diocesan Registry to hold records for the Church of Ireland Diocese, this Grade A listed building has been restored and is open to the public. While the records are no longer retained in the building, examples are on display, with ancient coins, gems, significant prints, early Christian artefacts and other collections and curiosities which belong to Armagh Public Library. There are also opportunities to explore the collections in more detail, through the use of touch screens. Lough Oughter Castle Clough Oughter Castle was built by the Normans in the 12th Century. The locals were so impressed they quickly captured it for themselves. They fought hard to retain it until Cromwell’s forces finally blasted through the walls in 1653. The walls lie where they and for hundreds of years the castle belonged to no one but its painters, poets and curious visitors. Beaghmore Stone Circles Beaghmore Stone Circles are a reflection of the ritual and spiritual life in the early Bronze Age. Archaeologists believe that Beaghmore Stone Circles date back to around 1500BC. There are 7 stone circles and alignments along with several cairns on this spectacular preserved site. Access to the site itself is free but there is a small entrance fee for Oldbridge House which provides an audio visual show and displays of original and replica weaponry of the time.

Carrowkeel Megalithic Cemetery Near the village of Castlebaldwin, travellers can have the delight of visiting the historic Carrowkeel cemetery, beautifully situated in the Bricklieve Mountains. The megalithic site includes 14 passage cairns, most of which are round in shape and contain limestone slabs. The tombs date from 3200 to 2400 BC. Carrowkeel also boasts 140 circular stone foundations, which are thought to be the remains of a prehistoric village. Knockatallon Looped Walks The Knockatallon Looped Walks are a series of four looped walks in the hills of north Monaghan, including the Tra, Rock, Bragan and Esh walks.
