It was on this hill on the17th March 1840 that the foundation stone for Saint Patrick’s Catholic Cathedral was laid by Archbishop Crolly. It was over 60 years before the Cathedral was completed, with consecration on 24th July 1904. 4 Armagh Public Library e r Armagh Public Library is the oldest library in Northern Ireland, founded in 1771 by u Archbishop Richard Robinson as part of his t l plans to establish a university. The nucleus of the collection is Archbishop Robinson’s u own library, containing 17th and 18th C century books on many subjects. The High H King of Ireland, Brian Boru, was buried in the Cathedral grounds in 1014. While the records are no longer retained in the building, examples are on display, with ancient coins, gems, significant prints, early Christian artefacts and other collections and curiosities which belong to Armagh Public Library. There are also opportunities to explore the collections in more detail, through the use of touch screens. History / Heritage / Culture Cavan Burren A jewel in the historic crown of County Cavan is our very own Burren. Located in the west of the County, Burren is a rocky "relict" landscape - one of the finest in Ireland. This very special place is home to tombs, walls and habitation sites from pre- historic times. Visitors can explore the variety of megalithic tombs and ancient fields. Our Burren outlines the history of human settlement and gives us an insight into the how pre-historic man lived.
