However, it is also a city well-served by open spaces. There are numerous small parks which provide relief retreat from city life, while areas such as Richmond Park and Riverside, Hyde Park, Hampstead Heath, Epping Forest and Wimbledon Common are real recreational treasures. Although not so obviously popular, many of our cemeteries and churchyards provide a much overlooked such amenity. Many of those established in Victorian times were designed to be used as places of recreation by the public as well as places of burial. Many are still in use and remain beautiful and interesting places for quiet walks. Some, on ceasing active use for burials, have been developed as wildlife sanctuaries and community parks. As is the case with parklands, there are some especially splendid cemeteries in the capital which stand out from the rest. I would personally recommend the City of London, Islington and St.

The Project resulted from conversations amongst Charlton groups as to how people’s love of the Charlton Parks could best be recorded and how more people could be encouraged to help ensure their good health and use. The project, running from April 2011 to December 2012, has been funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund - Your Heritage programme, and by a contribution from The Viscount Gough. These parks have been given by or purchased from the Maryon-Wilson Estate, and are maintained for the people of the Royal Borough of Greenwich by the Parks and Open Spaces Department of the Borough. Over recent years local people have formed ‘Friends of the Parks’ groups who encourage their use and volunteer to take part in their care and development.

  • CHARLTON CEMETERY - Part One Gill Cooper
CHARLTON CEMETERY - Part One Gill Cooper Earlier this year I was asked to provide a talk and tour of Charlton Cemetery. Due to Covid-19 these have had to be postponed. What follows is the first part of this now combined talk and tour. History and development of cemeteries in England. By the late 18th century the vast increase in population many churchyards had become full, unsanitary and presented health hazards. It was acknowledged that a change in burial customs was inevitable and was much needed. There was also a demand for non-religious burials. There were no rules or regulations as to how burials took place. This meant that corpses were often buried just two feet, or less, from the surface and not always marked. New cemeteries were opened but there were no set plans or standardised funding. Many were run by private companies. The first cholera epidemic in 1831 killed 52,000 people. Following a second one in 1848 the government was forced to act. On the 31st August 1848 the first Public Health Act received Royal accent. This act laid the foundations for all subsequent public health measures and was the beginning of the legislative process that would establish public cemeteries throughout Britain. The Act created the General Board of Health with powers to appoint officials and inspectors. The first Metropolitan Burial Act came in in 1852 followed by a series of further Acts that were consolidated in 1857 with the Burial Act. The Parish appointed Burial Boards were responsible for management and fees. The first legal cremation was in 1885 and the first municipal crematorium opened in Hull in 1901.
