13 of the Year McMillan named Labatt's Golfer of the Year

When 20-year-old Oave McMillan steps onto a go lf course he has one goal in mind -- to pl ay the best he ca n on that panic ul ar day. The philosophy led him to some major victori es during 1989 which resulted in him being named the Labalt 's Manitoba Brewery Go lfer of the Year. The honour bestowed by the Manitoba Golf Associati on as selec ted by local golf media repl'eselllalives came as a compl ete surpri se to Di.lVe who wa in Lake land , Plorida fIn i. hing hi s founh year of stud ies at Florida Southern ollego. "I knew I had a good year but I did not give much thought to be ing named Labatl 's Golfer of the Year," he said uft er th e annOuncement . "It is a real honour rece iving the title," A solid, all round player, Dave had a successful 1989 on the links. He won the provincial amateur title in a last round scramble and shared the medalist honours. Dave rece ived the Jack Swanson Memori al medallion a.< the leader in the provincial Willingdon up team tria ls and reached the semi-fin als in the match-pl ay championshi p. I Ie also set the pace, a one-under-par 69. to lead Rossmere to the inter-club team championship. In addition, he was low player among 17 anadi ans in a qualifying test fo r the U.S. Amateur. Started on left Dave was inLmduccd to golf at age 12 by hi s gr:mufathcr. Ori ginall y, he onl y had access tn left-handed clubs so that is how he played. lie made the switch to right-handed go lf but cont inues to putt left-handed. At. age 16 he won the Manitoba Juvenile title and earned a benh on a number of Jun ior teams. The budding golfe r earned a sc holarship to Florida Southern and finds it a great way to receive nn education and pu rs ue hi s golf goals. "I would like to make a cmeer out of golf and play pro somewhere," he says, optimi sti call y addin g th at most pla yers on the tours we'\! to college for one or two years. l'hc college sc hedule of a dozen 54-hole tOurnaments all ows Dave to play year round . Add a familiari zation ro und at each event and dail y practi ce and that add s up to a long, competiti ve ~c a.'\o n . "Every time I tce up it is against tough competition and I have to play to stay on the fi ve-member schocl team." Dave says the r i goro u ~ ~c h cd u l e and competition build ~ a competiti ve-edge into him and helps him to menUlll y improve hi s game. "Golf is played in your head. The more you pl ay, the more confi dence you get. The better players have that confi dence factor and I try to build it through practi sing all aspects of my game every day." If there is a key to becoming a good golfe r, Dave thinks it is puttin g. Aga in. it is a matter of practice to build contidence so you have a good feel for what you are doing. "I lik e to work on all aspects of my game because I don't do one thing rea ll y well. Golf is not just masterin g yo ur putter or dri ver, you need to be strong in both areas because if one pan of youI' game is workin g, often the other isn't." Dave is locking forward to finishing the schocl year. He then has one more semester before he grndlHl1 es with a major in bu siness tUld minor in crimina l justi ce. Regardin g hi s future in golf, Dave speaks cand idly. "I pl an 10 try the tOUl' schocl and hope to be on the Canadi an To ur in t.h e Summer of '9 1 to gel my fect we t. When he tees up, he .will try to forget about the limitations imposed by trying to shoct a speci fi c score. Hi s goal will be to play the best he can on that panicular day and be sati slicd with the resul ts. The 1989 Manitoba Open played at Southwood Goli' and Country lub will long he remembered for the dramatic drive and pUll by Stuart Hendley on the first playoff hole which gave him ule titl e. n,e 24-year-old Texan won hi s first professionaltoumament on the 269-yard IDth hole with a drive over the trees that landed on the b'l'ecn and a 40-foot pUll that dropped i'or an eagle two and an $18,000 payoff. Huving gone for the green on 12 previous occasions and been succcssfullhrcc times, Hendl ey had already decided to take the ri sk before his playoff competitors, 1987 and 1988 Manitoba Open champion Dave 8arr of Kananaskis and Steve Chapman of Victoria, had elected to lay up their drives and concentrate on thei r approaeh shots. " I just figured it is the playoff and I run playing against two great players," reasoned Hendl ey. " I figured the chances of them making three are great so I am • just going to go for it. 111e worst I was goi ng to do is third and if I get lucky, like I There was all $18.000 calise/or did, then it doesn 't maLLer what they do." celebration whell Swart fiendlt!y of TeJ'os The extra-hole heroics came after the trio com pl eted the 72-hole toumament tied drove Ihe greell olld sallk a 40-/001 at 265, 15-under-par and one shot be LLer than the tournament record set by Barr in pull on/he Manitoba Opel/ 's flrst 1987. playoff hole. Barr, 37, and Chapman, 31, both shot Iive-under-par 65 in the final round while Hendl ey finished with a three-under 67. Barr fe lt he lost the tournament on the par five, 516-yard 17th which is usutilly good for a birdie. His second shot, a two-iron, went into the sand 15 feet from the pin. He barely made the green with hi s next shot, the subsequent 12-foot birdie putt went awry and he settled for par. Still eager to wi n, on the 18th he mi ssed a 30-foot birdie pUll which would have given him a Manitoba Ope n hat trick.
