Australian Medal Winners WORLD AMATEUR TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP (EISENHOWER TROPHY) AUSTRALIAN REPRESENTATIVES AND RECORDS The World Amateur Team Championship is conducted by the International Golf Federation which comprises the national governing bodies of golf in more than 110 countries. It is a biennial competition rotated among three geographic zones of the world: Asia-Pacific, American and European-African. Each team, which has two or three players, plays 18 holes of stroke play for four days. In each round, the total of the two lowest scores from each team constitutes the team score for the round. The four-day (72-hole) total is the team’s score for the championship. The winning team receives custody of the Eisenhower Trophy for the ensuing two years. (NB. Prior to 2002 the competition was best three scores from four-man teams.)     The Open is the oldest of the four major championships in professional golf and the only one contested outside the United States. Always played on a coastal ‘links’ course, there are now ten courses on the rota, five in Scotland. This unforgettable tour will take you to each of the five Open Venues in Scotland to experience for yourself the challenges faced by the world’s top golfers at the toughest major of them all. Along the way your guide will discuss other places of interest with you, exploring the glorious scenery and history of the surrounding area. There will be plenty of stops for refreshments, and ‘retail therapy – the choice is yours! Located 45 minutes’ East of Edinburgh, Muirfield is home of ‘The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers’, and a ‘men only’ club until March 2017. Having rejected the idea of women members in May 2016 and been briefly removed from the Open rota, the members re-considered their position and agreed to ‘welcome women to their waiting list’. Considered to be the fairest test of all the Open venues, there are fewer quirky bounces and hidden dangers than most links courses contain, though tall heather, blind shots and deep bunkers are still there to ‘punish’ bad shots. The challenge lies in the layout of the course. Most links courses run along the coast and then back again. Muirfield, is arranged as two loops of nine holes, one clockwise, one anticlockwise. This means every hole on the course has a different wind direction from the tee. No more than three consecutive holes follow the same direction at any stage.

Since that first playing, the Western Amateur has provided some of the best competition in golf, amateur or professional. This record book allows reporters covering the Western Am the ability to easily compare current achievements to those of the past. It draws on research conducted by delving into old newspaper files, and by going through the Western Golf Association’s own Western Amateur files, which date to 1949. A few years ago, a major expansion of the Guide presented complete year-by-year records and a player register for 1899 through 1955, the pre-Sweet Sixteen era, for the first time. Details on some courses and field sizes from various years remain to be found, but no other amateur championship has such an in-depth resource. Remaining holes in the listings will continue to be filled in for future editions. The section on records has been revised, and begins on page 8. This includes overall records, including a summary on how the medalist fared, and more records covering the Sweet Sixteen years. The 209-page Guide is in two sections. Part 1 includes a year-by-year summary chart, records, a special chart detailing the 37 players who have played in the Sweet Sixteen in the 63 years since its adoption in 1956 and have won a professional major championship, and a comprehensive report on the Sweet Sixteen era through both year-by-year results and a player register.
