MEMORIAL’S 2010 HONOREE AWARD BACKGROUND The Memorial Tournament was founded by Jack Nicklaus in 1976 with the purpose of hosting a Tournament in recognition and honor of those individuals who have contributed to the game of golf in conspicuous honor. Since 1996 and the Memorial’s inaugural honoree, Bobby Jones, the Event has recognized many of the game’s greatest contributors. PAST HONOREES 1976 Robert T. Dey, Jr Joyce Wethered SELECTION Each year the Memorial Tournament’s Captain Club membership selects the upcoming Tournament honoree. The Captains Club is comprised of a group of dignitaries from the golf industry who have helped grow and foster the professional and amateur game. Morgan Taylor, Jr Tom Watson RECOGNITION As the 2010 Memorial Honoree, Seve Ballestaros will be recognized throughout the Tournament week. The primary recognition focus will be applied to a Tuesday, June 1st Ceremony (held at Muirfield Village Golf Club, Dublin, Ohio) at 15:00. Jack and Barbara Nicklaus will host the Captains, Tour Professionals and the attending public in a one hour ceremony. The Golf Channel will tape the Ceremony and air segments during a prime time broadcast on Wednesday, June 2nd. Other methods of recognition will include the following: Achievement Plaques – recognizing Seve’s career achievements permanently displayed within Memorial Park (with all other previous honorees) Honoree Medallion – silver coin placed on display at Muirfield Village Golf Club (a medallion will be sent to Seve as well) Honoree Book/Official Magazine – printed book and magazine recognizing Seve’s achievements (copies will be sent to Seve) Painting – a painting of Seve has been commissioned and will be displayed at Muirfield Village Golf Club CBS/Golf Channel Broadcast – both CBS and Golf Channel will produce and broadcast segments featuring Seve’s career accomplishments and contribution to the game SEVE’S LIVE MESSAGE (15:15 – 15:25) Seve will be introduced by Ceremony host, Mr. Charlie Mechem Recognition and thanks to Jack and Barbara Nicklaus as hosts of the Memorial Tournament Recognition of the Captains Club members and special thanks for their selection of Seve as the 2010 Honoree Reflection of a special moment or two from Seve’s career (i.e. Masters or British Open wins) Reflection of the 1987 Ryder Cup held at Muirfield Village Golf Club (Dublin, Ohio) where Seve was part of the winning team (first European win on US soil – start of man European wins) Reflection of Seve and Jack competing together Recognition and thanks of the honor – offering Seve’s best wishes to all involved including the competitors. Answer 3 questions offered by Host, Charlie Mechem NOTE: Seve can speak as long as he is comfortable. If agreeable to Seve we will share the video with Golf Channel and CBS for use on the broadcast. .
