There are 128 athletes in total, 64 men and 64 women, and 12 teams of each gender. Places at the Olympic Games are qualified by National Olympic Committees (NOCs) at the World Archery Championships and other qualifying tournaments. The archery competition is split into two parts: the ranking round and the head-to-head matches. The ranking round takes place on the first day of competition, the day of the Opening Ceremony of the Games, and is used to seed athletes and teams for the matches. All 64 individuals and all 12 teams take part in the matches but only the top 16 mixed teams qualify for the second part of the competition. The head-to-head matches pit one athlete or team against another. Matches at the Olympic Games are decided using the set system. The winner of each match advances to the next round and the loser is eliminated. There are six rounds in the individual competitions: three elimination rounds (first round or 1/32, second round or 1/16 and third round or 1/8), followed by quarterfinals, semifinals and finals (bronze and gold medal matches). There are four rounds in the team and mixed team competitions: one elimination round (first round or 1/8), followed by quarterfinals, semifinals and finals (bronze and gold medal matches). DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE WORLD ARCHERY CHAMPIONSHIPS AND THE OLYMPIC GAMES The number of participants in the World Archery Championships is not restricted by qualification and is much higher. Therefore, there is a limit on the number of athletes that enter the match bracket. A bye into the third round is also given to the top eight seeds, meaning that a total of 104 athletes participate in the individual matches. As well as the World Archery Championships for outdoor target archery, there are also world championships held for the disciplines of field archery, 3D archery, para archery, masters archery and youth archery. CHANGES SINCE THE RIO 2016 OLYMPIC GAMES The mixed team event has been added to the programme. SPORT RULES AND PROCEDURES Athletes at the Olympic Games use recurve bows to shoot at target faces that are 122cm in diameter, set 70 metres away and have 10 concentric rings scoring 1-10 points. The middle ring, which awards the highest score of 10 points, is just 12.2cm in diameter. The maximum score is 720 points. Athletes are ranked according to their scores and placed into the match brackets. In the first round, the top seed (ranked) shoots against the lowest seed, the second seed against the second-lowest seed, and so on. Matches are decided using the set system. Athletes shoot sets of three arrows. The maximum score in a set is 30 points. The athlete that has the highest score in the set receives two set points. If athletes have the same score in a set, both receive one set point. The first athlete to collect six set points wins the match. If the athletes are tied at 5-5 after five sets, then the match is decided in a tiebreak. Shooting takes place alternately with a time limit of 20 seconds per arrow. The higher-seeded athlete chooses who shoots first in the first set. In subsequent sets, the trailing athlete shoots first. If the score is tied, the match reverts to the original shooting order. Team events A team consists of three athletes of the same gender from a single NOC. The athletes’ individual ranking round scores are combined to create a team score. The maximum score is 2160 points. Teams are ranked according to their scores and placed into the match brackets. Matches are decided using the set system. Teams shoot sets of six arrows, two per athlete per set. The maximum score in a set is 60 points. The team that has the highest score in the set receives two set points. If the teams have the same score in the set, both receive one set point. The first team to collect five set points wins the match. If the teams are tied at 4-4 after four sets then the match is decided in a tiebreak. Shooting takes place alternately in rotations of three arrows, one per athlete, with a time limit of two minutes per set. Teams may freely change the order of shooting between each rotation. The higher-seeded team chooses who shoots first in the first set. In subsequent sets, the trailing team shoots first. If the score is tied, the match reverts to the original shooting order. Mixed team event A mixed team consists of two athletes of different genders from a single NOC. The highest-scoring athletes in the ranking round compete in the mixed team. The athletes’ individual ranking round scores are combined to create a mixed team score. The maximum score is 1440 points. Mixed teams are ranked according to their score and placed into the match brackets. Matches are decided using the set system. Mixed teams shoot sets of four arrows, two per athlete per set. The maximum score in a set is 40 points. Mixed teams may freely change the order of shooting between each rotation. The higher-seeded mixed team chooses who shoots first in the first set. In subsequent sets, the trailing mixed team shoots first. If the score is tied, the match reverts to the original shooting order.
