Sci.) 43 : 709 - 719 (2009) An Analysis of the Phylogenetic Relationship of Thai Cervids Inferred from Nucleotide Sequences of Protein Kinase C Iota (PRKCI) Intron Kanita Ouithavon1, Naris Bhumpakphan2, Jessada Denduangboripant3, Boripat Siriaroonrat4 and Savitr Trakulnaleamsai5* ABSTRACT The phylogenetic relationship of five Thai cervid species (n=21) and four spotted deer (Axis axis, n=4), was determined based on nucleotide sequences of the intron region of the protein kinase C iota (PRKCI) gene. Blood samples were collected from seven captive breeding centers in Thailand from which whole genomic DNA was extracted. Intron1 sequences of the PRKCI nuclear gene were amplified by a polymerase chain reaction, using L748 and U26 primers. Approximately 552 base pairs of all amplified fragments were analyzed using the neighbor-joining distance matrix method, and 19 parsimony- informative sites were analyzed using the maximum parsimony approach. Phylogenetic analyses using the subfamily Muntiacinae as outgroups for tree rooting indicated similar topologies for both phylogenetic trees, clearly showing a separation of three distinct genera of Thai cervids: Muntiacus, Cervus, and Axis. The study also found that a phylogenetic relationship within the genus Axis would be monophyletic if both spotted deer and hog deer were included. Hog deer have been conventionally classified in the genus Cervus (Cervus porcinus), but this finding supports a recommendation to reclassify hog deer in the genus Axis. (3) Results: Anaplasma phagocytophilum and Babesia DNA was demonstrated in 90.5% and 47.3% of the 74 combined wild cervids and 14.8% and 18.5% of the farmed deer, respectively. Twelve 16S rRNA variants of A. phagocytophilum were delineated.

Els resultats de les anàlisis qualitatives i quantitatives són consistents amb una adaptació alimentària a una dieta mixta, tal com també ho són algunes característiques cranio-dentàries: en particular, el morro, més aviat quadrat, les grans àrees d'inserció del musculus masseter, el desenvolupament de la prominència massetèrica sobre el M', la profunditat i altura del corpus i ramus a I' angulus mandibulae, la superfície d'inserció reduïda del musculus temporalis a la mandibula i les dents hipsodontes. Els resultats de la nostra anàlisi suggereixen que el cèrvid de la Cova Dragonara era un animal de dieta mixta, que va incrementar el consum d'herba en comparació amb el seu possible ancestre.

    www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Disentangling adaptive evolutionary radiations and the role of diet in promoting diversification Received: 17 March 2016 Accepted: 20 June 2016 on islands Published: 13 July 2016 Daniel DeMiguel Although the initial formulation of modern concepts of adaptive radiation arose from consideration of the fossil data, rigorous attempts to identify this phenomenon in the fossil record are largely uncommon. Here I focus on direct evidence of the diet (through tooth-wear patterns) and ecologically- relevant traits of one of the most renowned fossil vertebrates-the Miocene ruminant Hoplitomeryx from the island of Gargano-to deepen our understanding of the most likely causal forces under which adaptive radiations emerge on islands. Results show how accelerated accumulation of species and early- bursts of ecological diversification occur after invading an island, and provide insights on the interplay between diet and demographic (population-density), ecological (competition/food requirements) and abiotic (climate-instability) factors, identified as drivers of adaptive diversification. A pronounced event of overpopulation and a phase of aridity determined most of the rate and magnitude of radiation, and pushed species to expand diets from soft-leafy foods to tougher-harder items. Unexpectedly, results show that herbivorous mammals are restricted to browsing habits on small-islands, even if bursts of ecological diversification and dietary divergence occur. This study deepens our understanding of the mechanisms promoting adaptive radiations, and forces us to reevaluate the role of diet in the origins and evolution of islands mammals. Islands have long been recognised as nature’s test tubes of great value in studying macroevolutionary processes even since Darwin’s early proposal of natural selection1.

During the Early Pleistocene, the north Mediterranean area and Caucasian Land acted as refugia for warm‐loving Pliocene faunal holdovers. The Italian Peninsula was biogeographically partially isolated during most of the Early Pleistocene due to the forested Dinaric Alps zoogeographic filter, which possibly caused the late arrival of hominines on the Italian Peninsula.
