With its golden sandy beaches, azure blue waters and warm tropical climate, Sri Lanka is a year round destination for holidaymakers seeking sun, sand and sea. The island has a rich cultural heritage that dates back over 2,000 years which is linked to the origins of Buddhism in the country with magnificently constructed stupas and the ruins of ancient kingdoms. Controlled from the 16th century onwards by the Portuguese, Dutch and finally the British prior to gaining full independence in 1948, the influences of colonial powers remain visible in architecture and a number of forts across the country. Sri Lanka is recognised as a global biodiversity hotspot with a rich variety of endemic flora and fauna, and incredibly for a small island, can boast of large iconic animals such as the Asian Elephant, Leopard and the largest animal to have inhabited our planet, the Blue Whale.

As per the vision of the pioneers of the Journal the present issue accommodates six articles. Since its inception in 1978 the Journal has been published with a break in the eighties due to the unrest that prevailed in the Northern and Eastern part of Sri Lanka and it has resumed its publication since 2015. We are unable to publish it on a regular basis due to various problems like lack of facilities, funds and printing due to dearth of professionals with English knowledge. The present volume consists of articles related to maritime intercourse and naval warfare, material culture in archaeology, logical methodology for “Refuting” in Vedanta philosophical tradition, mapping and evaluation of the changes in the land uses of selected river basins in the Northern Province, gender inequality, land rights and socio- economic transformation of women and landscape painting in BritishCeylon. Sri Lanka The Enchanted Isle A Greentours Trip Report 18th February to 8th March 2013 Led by Paul Cardy Trip Report and Systematic Lists written by Paul Cardy Day 0/1 Monday February 18th, Tuesday February 19th Journey to Sri Lanka, and to Kandy Both flights arrived on schedule, and Mr Silva was at the airport early in the morning to meet first the group arriving from London, and shortly afterwards me coming from Italy via Abu Dhabi. Once aboard the spacious bus we drove through reasonably quiet streets in the dark although there was already quite a bit of traffic on the road. Once light, very common birds began with House and Jungle Crows; a selection of egrets; Red-vented Bulbul; White-throated Kingfisher; and Rose-ringed Parakeets. We also drove past a very large Flying Fox roost. After about two and a half hours we reached a bustling Kandy, and our hotel, The Suisse. Around the lake were Indian Cormorants, Spot-billed Pelican, Little and Great Egrets, and Black-crowned Night Herons. The staff at the hotel gave a warm welcome and it was impressive that they let us check in so early in the day, although there was a slight wait for some of the rooms. While we waited an excellent buffet breakfast was enjoyed. A Common Evening Brown perched on the walls of the hotel. Then it was time for sleep, and most of us managed a few hours, with lunch optional, and delicious for those who attended. We met up at 3.30 for an afternoon excursion.

Rotifera from Sri Lanka (Ceylon) 2 Further Studies on the Eurotatoria Including New Records by R. CHENGALATH*, C. H. FERNANDo* and W. KosTEt INTRODUCTION In the first paper of this series, Chengalath and Fernando (1973) dealt with the genus Lecane from Sri Lanka. In all, twenty five species were recorded, of which seventeen species were new records. Two new species were also described. On the present paper we deal with the rest of the Eurotatoria. Again we have found many new records. In all 79 species are described in the present paper of which 47 are new records. The present study is based on the examination of over 300 samples from 135localities including large and small tanks, ponds of various sizes, rice fields, streams and marshes. The collections cover the whole area of Sri Lanka and were taken during different seasons of the year mainly from 1968-1972. The sampling localities are given in Fig. 1. In the previous paper (Chengalath and Fernando 1973) the literature on the Sri Lanka species was reviewed. Also the literature on the Eurotatoria of South and South-East Asia was given. Therefore, we have omitted reference to this literature. The methods used in the present study were the same as those referred to in Chengalath and Fernando (1973).
