The making of the British Jazz Avant-Garde: 1968-1973 Introduction: Making British Jazz ... and Race In 1968 the Arts Council of Great Britain (ACGB), the quasi-governmental agency responsible for providing public support for the arts, formed its first ‘Jazz Sub-Committee’. Its main business was to allocate bursaries usually consisting of no more than a few hundred pounds to jazz composers and musicians. The principal stipulation was that awards be used to develop creative activity that might not otherwise attract commercial support. Bassist, composer and bandleader Graham Collier was the first recipient – he received £500 to support his work on what became the Workpoints composition. In the early years of the scheme, further beneficiaries included Ian Carr, Mike Gibbs, Tony Oxley, Keith Tippett, Mike Taylor, Evan Parker and Mike Westbrook – all prominent members of what was seen as a new, emergent and distinctively British avant-garde jazz scene. Our point of departure in this chapter is that what might otherwise be regarded as a bureaucratic footnote in the annals of the ACGB was actually a crucial moment in the history of British jazz.

This book spill off the page in all directions, kaleidoscope of vistas, medley of tunes and street noises […]” William Burroughs, The Naked Lunch, 1959. Introduction 1 The urban landscape occupies a specific position in Bowie’s works. His lyrics are fraught with references to “city landscape[s]”5 and urban nightscapes. The metropolis provides not only the object of a diegetic and spectatorial gaze but it also enables the author to further a discourse on his own inner fragmented self as the nexus, lyrics— music—city, offers an extremely rich avenue for investigating and addressing key issues such as alienation, loneliness, nostalgia and death in a postmodern cultural context.

  • 'Happiness Runs' to Cleveland
'Happiness runs' to Cleveland By Ron Johnston Donovan, the pop folk singer of the 1960s, appeared to be wearing a “night gown” on the big stage. That was my first “live” look and impression of the troubadour from Scotland from high up in the cheap seats at Cleveland’s Public Hall in October of 1969. With me that school night in the big city were Blamo and Becca. I probably paid for the tickets, because it was my idea in the first place to see Donovan in concert. Blamo was a Heidelberg soccer teammate, and Becca, my fiancee. A couple of years earlier, Donovan had been on tour and was scheduled to perform in northeast Ohio, but a broken leg on the pitch at the University of Toledo spoiled my plans. Not having a car, transportation to Cleveland was initially a priority. In a recent conversation, Blamo mistakenly thought we’d hitchhiked to the concert. But no, I was able to borrow some wheels, thanks to Jim Young. Thing is, I hardly knew Young, who was a year behind me at Heidelberg. We may have been in the same political science class. Anyway, Young was Donovan interacts with fans after a from Sandusky, and he had this white, light-colored concert in Columbus, Ohio, in 1986. Volkswagen that he was willing to lend to me for the evening. I know I didn’t really want to thumb my way to Cleveland. So, hurrah! Jim Young to the rescue! Fortunately, back in high school, I learned how to drive on a standard shift/stick.

  • Psaudio Copper
Issue 95 OCTOBER 7TH, 2019 Welcome to Copper #95! This is being written on October 4th---or 10/4, in US notation. That made me recall one of my former lives, many years and many pounds ago: I was a UPS driver. One thing I learned from the over-the- road drivers was that the popular version of CB-speak, "10-4, good buddy" was not generally used by drivers, as it meant something other than just, "hi, my friend". The proper and socially-acceptable term was "10-4, good neighbor." See? You never know what you'll learn here. In #95, Professor Larry Schenbeck takes a look at the mysteries of timbre---and no, that's not pronounced like a lumberjack's call; Dan Schwartz returns to a serious subject --unfortunately; Richard Murison goes on a sea voyage; Roy Hall pays a bittersweet visit to Cuba; Anne E. Johnson’s Off the Charts looks at the long and mostly-wonderful career of Leon Russell; J.I. Agnew explains how machine screws brought us sound recording; Bob Wood continues wit his True-Life Radio Tales; Woody Woodward continues his series on Jeff Beck; Anne’s Trading Eights brings us classic cuts from Miles Davis; Tom Gibbs is back to batting .800 in his record reviews; and I get to the bottom of things in The Audio Cynic, and examine direct some off-the-wall turntables in Vintage Whine. Copper #95 wraps up with Charles Rodrigues on extreme room treatment, and a lovely Parting Shot from my globe-trotting son, Will Leebens.
