Few, if any, localities, inthis country at all events, are so favourably situatedfor the construction of a comprehensive system of docks as that of Liverpool, not onlyby reason of its geographical position on the seaboard of the country, with its unrivalled water frontage, but also on account of its proximity to the great manu- faeturing districts, as well as to the coal and mineral fields of the North of England and Wales, with which it is linked by railways and canals, which aresuch important factors in thedevelopment and maintenance of successful trading. -

MANCHESTER COURIER AND GENERAL ADVERTISER 1856 to 1885 1 5 January 1856 Manchester City Court STEALING IRON FROM A BOAT Two young men named James Wynn and George Cooper, were charged with stealing two cwt of pig iron from a boat belonging to Mr Joel Carrington, carrier between Runcorn and Oldham. The prisoners were taken into custody about half past five o'clock on Tuesday afternoon when offering the iron for sale at a marine store. A boatman in Mr Carrington's employ said that on Monday night both prisoners assisted him to get his boat through several locks on the canal in Ancoats, but he did not see them throw any iron on shore, although they had plenty of opportunity of doing so. The iron produced was of a similar description to that which he had in his boat, and the “pigs” bore the same mark. He had brought the iron from Runcorn, and was taking it to Oldham. The prisoners, in defence, said that they had found the iron, and were committed for trial to the sessions. 2 26 January 1856 FATALITY A boatman named George Upton was drowned in the canal near the Castleford Wharf on Saturday. He had been sick on the previous night, and it is conjectured that on going to the side of the boat, he accidentally fell overboard. A verdict of “Found drowned” was returned at the inquest. 3 9 February 1856 Ashton and Stalybridge POLICE COURT Martha Savage was charged with stealing about 23 yards of print and calico, with several articles of wearing apparel, to the value of about 9s, the property of Thomas Robinson, boatman, Droylsden. -

Woodworth Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory Report Number 56 February 2006 The original POL Report 56 was constructed in 1999 using Wordperfect for the text in the body of the report. Printouts of that and the separate figures were then combined and the whole report printed by a commercial printer (copies may still be available from the POL Library). Unfortunately, no pdf was made at the time. In order to make this pdf now, and because POL does not use Wordperfect any longer, I have had to read the old Wordperfect file with Word, with the result that sections and footnotes etc. are not always laid out as before (and look a little messy in places). The resulting Liverpool tidal record is one of the longest of its type in the world and is shown to be of great importance to studies of long term changes in sea level as a result of climate change. -

An Act for authorising the Corporation of the city of A.D.1902 Liverpool to execute certain street improvements and to acquire certain lands for the protection of their Rivington water supply for confirming an agreement between the Corporation and the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board for making further regulations with respect to streets and buildings and with respect to sanitary matters for conferring on the Corporation powers with respect to Stanley Cattle Market for amending divers provisions of the Local Acts in force within the city and for other purposes. THE LIVERPOOL DOCK SYSTEM by Roderick Alan Stephenson MEng AMICE First published in Transactions Volume 8 1953-55 (1955) © Liverpool Nautical Research Society 2019 THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE LIVERPOOL DOCK SYSTEM by RODERICK ALAN STEPHENSON, M.Eng., A.M.I.C.E. Read 14th April 1955 As far back as the middle of the fourteenth century Liverpool occupied a somewhat important position in whatever maritime trade existed on the western seaboard of the country, and the port was then regarded as one of the best natural harbours along this coast. The site of the original port was the shallow creek which ran inland from the right bank of the river in a north-easterly direction, commencing at a point about midway along the "deep" on the site of which the Custom House used to stand, and extending along the depression now occupied by Paradise Street, Whitechapel and Byrom Street. Its length was about one mile and judging from its position it must have been well sheltered from the action of the prevailing winds. The vessels in those early days were few in number and small in size. It is recorded that twelve vessels with a gross burden of 177 tons represented the extent of the shipping belonging to the town in 1540. From there being no record of wharves or quays, vessels must have loaded and discharged their cargoes either afloat in the river by means of boats, or by grounding on the banks of the creek and making use of carts at low-water. Towards the end of the seventeenth century there began in Liverpool a great upsurge of industrial and commercial activity, which, once started, was to continue right through the eighteenth century with gathering momen tum and on into the nineteenth century with few checks.
