RELIQUES OF THE ANGLO-SAXON CHURCHES OF ST. BRIDGET AND ST. HILDEBURGA, WEST KIRKBY, CHESHIRE. By Henry Ecroyd Smith. (BEAD IST DEOBMBEB, 1870.) THE Parish of West Kirkby (now West Kirby), lying 18 miles N.W. of Chester city, is one of the most important in the hundred of Wirral, and occupies the whole of its north western angle. Dr. Ormerod describes its first quarter as comprising the townships of West Kirkby and Newton-cum- Larton, with that of Grange, Great Caldey or Caldey Grange ; second, the townships of Frankby and Greasby ; third, those of Great and Little Meols, with Hoose ; fourth, the township of Little Caldey.* Originally Kirklye, or, settlement at the Church, it became " West Kirkby," to distinguish it from "Kirkby-in-Walley," at the opposite corner of the peninsula of Wirral, now com monly known as Wallasey. Each of these extensive parishes possessed two Churches, those of Wallasey lying the one in Kirkby-in-Walley, the other on the Leasowes and near the sea, which ultimately destroyed it and engulphed the site together with that of its burial-ground. For further informa tion on this head, Bishop Gastrell's " Notitia," Dr. Ormerod's " History of the County,"\ and Lyson's " Cheshire,"% may be consulted. Gastrell's Notitia. Additional information the help the search be more effective, successful and quicker may include ● Type of vessel / details about the person ● Tides, weather, wind ● Number of persons ● Other vessels or assets involved ● Incident coordinator ● Source of information such as first informant ● where and when were they last seen (position and time) ● What was the reason for the alert call Information that will assist in the success of a SAR can come from a variety of sources: ● The person reporting the incident (999 or VHF call), they may also continue to provide information through the incident. -

The proposed development would have a generating capacity of 150MWe of electricity and would combust approximately 1,200,000 tonnes of biomass per annum. This report sets out the Secretary of State’s opinion on the basis of the information provided in RES UK & Ireland Ltd’s report entitled ‘Alexandra Dock Renewable Energy Project Environmental Scoping Report’ (August 2012). The Opinion can only reflect the proposals as currently described by the Applicant. The Secretary of State has consulted on the Scoping Report and the responses received have been taken into account in adopting this Opinion. The Secretary of State is satisfied that the topic areas identified in the Scoping Report encompass those matters identified in Schedule 4, Part 1, paragraph 19 of the Infrastructure Planning (Environmental Impact Assessment) Regulations 2009 (as amended). The Secretary of State draws attention both to the general points and those made in respect of each of the specialist topic areas in this Opinion. -

SANKEY NAVIGATION THE FIRST LANCASHIRE CANAL BY T. C. BARKER, M.A. Read 16 December 1948 > HEN Arthur Young visited the north of England in w 1771 he went " to Manchester with design not only to view the manufactures of that town but to make it my headquarters from thence to go the tour of his Grace the Duke of Bridgewater's navigation about which such wonders are abroad." 11 ' In the account of his tour in the north Young devoted forty- six pages, complete with maps and diagrams, to a description of these wonders: the twelve sets of " canal doors ", the underground tunnel deep into the hillside at Worsley and the aqueduct over the Irwell at Barton were all greeted with excited enthusiasm. Young's description, Smiles's appealing character sketch of James Brindley 12 ', and the reputation which the Bridge- water Canal gained by its magnificence, have together caused some historians, following Young's example, (3) to concentrate their attention upon the Worsley-to-Manchester Canal at the expense of the Sankey Navigation. Professor Mantoux, for instance, wrote that the Worsley Navigation was "the first real canal in England " (4), a belief which has received further wide publicity from Dr. Trevelyan ^ Arthur Young, A Six Months' Tour Through the North of England (London, 2nd edn., 1821), Vol. Ill, p. 187. 121 S. Hattendorf: The Idea of a “Fleet in Being” in Historical Perspective THE IDEA OF a “FLEET IN BEING” IN HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE John B. Hattendorf he phrase “fleet in being” is one of those troublesome terms that naval his- torians and strategists have tended to use in a range of different meanings. TThe term first appeared in reference to the naval battle off Beachy Head in 1690, during the Nine Years’ War, as part of an excuse that Admiral Arthur Herbert, first Earl of Torrington, used to explain his reluctance to engage the French fleet in that battle. A later commentator pointed out that the thinking of several Brit- ish naval officers ninety years later during the War for American Independence, when the Royal Navy was in a similar situation of inferior strength, contributed an expansion to the fleet-in-being concept. -
