http://www.nkunorse.com 2009 Media Guide • 5 HeadJohn Coach Basalyga John Basalyga is in his seventh season on the bench for the Northern Kentucky University men’s soccer team. He boasts a collegiate coaching record of 81-31-14 and has twice been named the Regional Coach of the Year.

Last season, Basalyga set a new standard for excellence in NKU soccer, taking the Norse to the Division II National Semifinal after claiming a third straight Midwest Region championship. The Norse finished with a 16-3-4 overall record and two of the team’s three seniors graduated as All-Americans, while sophomore Steven Beattie was named the Division II National Player of the Year.

In 2007, Basalyga made GLVC history, coaching the Norse to an unprecedented 13-0 conference record, as well as the school’s second consecutive Great Lakes Region title. The Norse rattled off 20-straight wins en route to a 22-2 final record, both school records. The dominating performance earned Basalyga his second-consecutive GLVC and Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year awards.

In 2006, Basalyga led the Norse to their first ever appearance in the NCAA tournament, and won the Great Lakes Region championship as the No. 2 seed. The squad matched a school record with 16 wins, and posted a NKU-best .795 winning percentage on the year.

In 2005, Basalyga’s NKU squad pulled off a first-round upset of third-seeded Wisconsin-Parkside in the opening round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference. It marked the first time since 1997 that NKU had won a game in the GLVC Tournament. The Norse, who entered the GLVC Tournament as the No. 6 seed, finished with an 11-8-2 record.

Basalyga led NKU to one of the nation’s top turnarounds in 2004, as the Norse posted a 12-6-2 overall record. NKU was 6-3-1 in the GLVC. Basalyga’s team also featured 2004 GLVC Player of the Year Nate Madden.

During his first season at the helm, Basalyga guided a youthful NKU squad to a 4-9-3 overall record, including a 2-5-3 mark in the GLVC. In his coaching debut at NKU in 2003, Basalyga led his team to a 4-2 win over NCAA Division II power University of Findlay.

Prior to accepting the NKU job, Basalyga compiled a 325-93-58 record as boys’ soccer coach at Turpin High School in Cincinnati over the course of 24 years. He led Turpin to Ohio state championships in 1986, 2000 and 2001, and his teams produced 22 consecutive winning seasons

He also led the Spartans to 15 sectional championships and was named the Ohio High School State Coach of the Year in 2001.

Basalyga is a 1973 graduate of Bowling Green State University. He earned four letters in at Bowling Green. He also played for three years and competed one season in soccer at Bowling Green.

Basalyga and his wife, Linda, reside in Cincinnati. They have three children. His daughter, Lindsay Basalyga, is the women’s soccer head coach at Eastern Kentucky University.

But Steven Beattie, a freshman from Dublin, Ireland, who didn’t know a puck from a potato, had a lot of learning to do when he arrived in Highland Heights.

“Coach gave me a DVD of ‘Miracle,’” the 2004 movie about the U.S Olympic hockey team’s shocking upset of the Soviets en route to the gold medal at Lake Placid in 1980,” said Beattie.

“After watching the movie, I understand Coach Bass a little better,” he said. “But it’s a good thing he and Kevin McCloskey (the Belfast-born pro with the Cincinnati Kings) were straight up with me when I was being recruited. They told me about all the running we’d be doing (at NKU). If they hadn’t, I guarantee you I’d have been on the first plane back home once I saw it.

“I can hardly believe he’s never played soccer. He’s one of the best coaches I’ve ever had. And in Ireland, all of our coaches have played at a very high level.”

Basalyga manages to keep tensions from boiling over. He has funny quips and valuable lessons from other sports that usually fit - but sometimes leave players scratching their heads.

8 • NKU Men’s Soccer Midwest Region Champions — 2006, 2007, 2008 National Semifinalist — 2008 AreJohn Basalyga You Tough Enough?

“He uses baseball analogies a lot,” said Impellizzeri, “but sometimes it’s a stretch. We’re pretty close to blowing it off when it comes to his baseball stories. He’s always bringing up the Yankees. That’s OK, though, because they haven’t won it all in awhile. We give him a rough time about that.”

Basalyga always gets his way. Early in practice he lines up his players for sprints so they’ll be tired when scrimmaging begins - which is the way they’ll feel during games.

How tough is Basalyga?

To appreciate his conditioning program, one must cue up the scene in “Miracle” where the U.S. hockey team has just skated to a disappointing tie on the road in preparation for the Olympics.

If you’ve seen the movie, you’ll remember one word - “Again” - because of the number of times Coach Herb Brooks uses it as a signal for his assistant to blow the whistle to begin the team’s gassers - short line-to-line sprints that build in length.

Again.

Again.

Again.

“Soon as I saw that scene,” said Beattie, “I went, aha! There it is. There’s Coach Basalyga. That’s NKU soccer.”

The freshmen at Lincoln Memorial will learn about it today.

And Basalyga has always been one to give fresh faces a chance to prove themselves.

“The one thing that we wanted to create this year by bringing in so many players is that we wanted a competitive situation in practice,” said Basalyga, who signed 17 new players to the black and gold this past off-season. “The new guys have to get used to what the older ones do. The older ones have to get used to what the new ones do.

“The older ones also better be able to handle it if the younger ones take their spot.”

Last season six of the 19 field players on the roster were freshmen. Of those six, three – Barrick, Donnelly and Meyer – earned significant playing time as reserves and jobs in the starting 11. With nine freshmen joining the squad this season, the competition for playing time, and the elevation for everyone on the field, will only increase.

And the Norse will need it given their extremely challenging schedule in which they will face four teams that competed in the NCAA Tournament. Great Lakes Valley Conference foes Rockhurst and Lewis remain on the conference schedule, while the Norse will hit the road for non-conference play against Carson-Newman and an Ashland squad that in 2008 had the biggest one- season turnaround in NCAA history, going from 0-17-1 two years ago to a 15- 4-2 mark last season. West Wesleyan, Lake Erie and an improved Findlay side will round out NKU’s non-conference slate.

The high charge will come when the Norse face off against top competition, as NKU went 0-1-4 against nationally ranked teams last season, though two of those ties – against Lewis and Millersville – ended with the Norse advancing in the NCAA Tournament.

But the ambition, the goal, is still the same: One game better, and another trophy for the case.

http://www.nkunorse.com 2009 Media Guide • 33 John Toebben Classic2009 Since 2003, the Northern Kentucky University men’s soccer team has honored the memory of former head coach John Toebben by hosting the season-opening John Toebben Classic at the Town & Country Sports Complex. The 2009 edition of the Classic will take place on Aug. 28-30.

Toebben, a native of Lorup, Germany, coached the Norse from 1990 to 2002, amassing a record of 137-105-15 and three Great Lakes Valley Conference championships. His teams were 75-42-8 against GLVC competition in his 12 seasons, and twice he was named GLVC Coach of the Year (1992 and 1993) while building the program into a powerhouse in the Great Lakes Region.

Toebben’s 1995 team won a school record 16 games, a mark unmatched until 2007 when the Norse ran the table during the regular season, claiming 20 consecutive wins before suffering defeat. His 1996 squad, featuring All- American J.T. Roberts, finished with a 14-5-1 record and were ranked as high as No. 14 nationally.

NKU’s home, Town & Country Sports Complex, was founded and owned by Toebben. The facility has hosted the Norse for 11 seasons.

NKU’s success is owed to Toebben’s legacy, and the Norse celebrate his contributions to Northern Kentucky soccer with the John Toebben Classic.
