Volume VIII: modern Liberal Arts Student Journal New England Conservatory Spring 2018 from the editors MUSICIANS HAVE A VOICE. For over a hundred and fifty years, great performers from all over the world have flocked to the New England Conservatory to develop this voice. Across all departments, music is the cornerstone of the lives of these students. It drives us, connects us, and empowers us. It gives us our voice, but it is not the only one we have. Musicians have a voice. We have the ability to observe our surroundings and comment on them. We have the capability to think about ourselves and our world, and to express our opinions. We have the potential to bring change, to start movements, and to make people listen. Words, like music, are tools we use to interpret our world and express our visions. These tools are best cultivated through our Liberal Arts curriculum, where we transform the same passion we have for our music into thoughtful narratives and essays. Throughout all four years of the undergraduate program at NEC, students take non-musical classes that allow us to form genuine opinions about our surroundings. Hear Here! is a sampling of the student writing that has impressed a panel of student editors and earned a place in the journal.

  • What DOES the Future Look Like? Schedule Continues by Pastor Phill, Sr
The Jewels A publication of Crown of Life Lutheran Church, Sun City West, AZ September 2019 Summer Worship What DOES the Future Look Like? Schedule Continues by Pastor Phill, Sr. Pastor Thank you. Thank you for your Christian stewardship expressed in your giving to our parish. Thanks to you we have been able to maintain our physical plant in such a Saturday – 4 PM condition that we can be proud of the face we present to the community beyond our Sunday – 9 AM doors. Anyone who walks in for the first time invariably speaks of how lovely our worship space is – and beyond that it is noticeable that we take care of the physical gift, our church, that God has given us. Bible Study As we look into the future I pray that in 10 or 20 years the generation that worships here Sunday Bible Class – 10:15 AM will be as generous and devoted to stewardship as is the current worshipping generation. It may not be. Many folks grow up these days without a sense of responsibility toward honoring God with a portion of the material blessings with which He honors us. Last year your Church Council undertook a study of what costs might be to maintain our church and grounds in the condition we enjoy. That’s a sobering concept… and we have been able to add funds annually to a Dedicated Fund for the purpose of major repair/renovation. We are cautiously optimistic that we, those who worship here now, will provide for the next generation to maintain this physical plant.

  • Psaudio Copper
Issue 92 AUGUST 26TH, 2019 Welcome to Copper #92! With the last gasp of summer comes the start of school years, Labor Day outings and gatherings...and with any luck you won't be haunted by the earworm of the wretched '60s song that shared the title of this piece.... In this issue, Prof. Larry Schenbeck introduces us to Swedish composer Allan Pettersson; on the 50th anniversary of that significant weekend, Dan Schwartz ponders Woodstock, and what it meant; Richard Murison examines the sound of music, and yes, the hills are alive; Jay Jay French leads you on a speaker chase: what will pair with $75,000 worth of audio gear? The answer may surprise you. We present Roy Hall's story of his first trip to China, from 2002; Anne E. Johnson’s Off the Charts brings us cuts from Journey that you may have never heard; J.I. Agnew brings us the details of how records are pressed; Woody Woodward brings us a warm-up for a new series with his piece on regional favorites, the Wildweeds; Anne’s Something Old/Something New brings us the story and music of the largely unsung Clara Wieck Schumann; Tom Gibbs reviews five more new records---this time with one classical release and one real clunker from a revered singer; I wonder why things can't be simple in The Audio Cynic, and in Vintage Whine, I look at different ways to make a turntable go 'round and 'round. Sounds simple, doesn't it? The second and final part of my report on the California Audio Show appears in this issue---and during the show, our friend Rich Isaacs visited a Linkwitz open house.
