Ernest Miller Hemingway was born on July 21, 1899 in Oak Park, Illinois to Dr. Clarence Edmonds Hemingway and Grace Hall Hemingway. The second of six children, Ernest enjoyed an adventurous boyhood, fishing and hunting with his father in the northern woods of Michigan. He attended Oak Park High School where he excelled in his classes, particularly English. He tried his hand at football and swimming, edited the school paper (the Trapeze), and contributed pieces to the school's literary magazine (the Tabula). After graduating high school, Ernest traveled to Kansas City and worked as a cub reporter for The Kansas City Star. In 1918, he began service as an ambulance driver for the Italian army. On July 8, he was wounded at Fossalta on the Italian Piave while delivering chocolates, cigarettes, and postcards to soldiers. He married Elizabeth Hadley Richardson on September 3, 1921. The newlyweds soon entered the literary community of Paris, living off of Hadley's trust fund and Ernest's pay as a foreign correspondent for the Toronto Star. The 1920's were extremely productive writing years for Hemingway. Three Stories and Ten Poems was published in 1923, In Our Time in 1925. In 1926, The Torrents of Spring and the widely successful novel, The Sun Also Rises were published. -

Introduction Enter an art museum or a library and you will find numerous examples of appropriation, all or most of which were most likely legal at the time. From the birth of copyright and the idea that an author, encompassed as a writer, artist, composer, or musician, is the creator of a completely original work, our legal and moral perceptions of appropriation have changed. Merriam-Webster defines appropriation in multiple ways, two of which apply to the discussion of art and appropriation. The first, “to take exclusive possession of” and the second “to take or make use of without authority or right.”1 The battle over rights and appropriation is not one that is only fought in the courtroom and gallery, it also concerns our own lives. Many aspects of our lives involve appropriation, from pagan holidays appropriated into the Christian calendar to the music we listen to, even to the words we speak or write appropriated from other countries and cultures. As artists, appropriation in many forms makes its way into works of any media. The topic of appropriation leads to a discussion of where our creative ideas come from. They, in some sense, have been appropriated as well. Whether we overhear a snippet of a conversation that ends up woven into a creative work or we take a picture of somebody, unknowingly, as they walk down a tree-shadowed street, we are appropriating life. For centuries, artists have been inspired by public life, and the stories and images of others have been appropriated into their work. -

For instance, applied to the engagement of the film-viewer, appropriation can be a more vivid term for spectatorship and reception studies, especially if we think of the active and interactive role we now tend to assign to the spectator—as viewer, as user, as player—given the different screen activities that are involved in the consumption and apperception of moving images. These include going to the cinema, watching television, using the monitor screens of our laptops and tablets, or acquiring the skills needed to play video games. In short, spectatorship as appropriation acknowledges the active participation of the viewer in the process of reception of films and the consumption of visual displays and spectacles. Appropriation and cinephilia However, in the more specific case of the cinema, appropriation can also signify a more intimate gesture of love and an act of devotion. Thus, cinephilia—the particularly intense manner of living the film experience, by wanting to repeat it and to prolong it—should also be seen as a form of appropriation. But cinephilia, as a way of watching films, of speaking about them, of accumulating expertise and then writing about films, is both appropriation (in the sense of holding on to, and not letting go) and its opposite: a desire to share, to diffuse this knowledge and create, through this sharing, a likeminded community. Cinephilia of the Internet age has produced its own form of active and productive appropriation, in the form of the video-essay: a genre that combines the history of compilation films, of found footage films and the essay film: all genres that try to make films reflect about their own conditions of possibility, and that enrich our experience of cinema by creating forms of para-cinema, post- cinema and meta-cinema. -

Student’s Name Independent Honors English Authorship Review Fall 2020 Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961) Born in Oak Park, Illinois, on July 21, 1899, Ernest Hemingway grew up to be one of the most notable writers in 20th Century America, winning the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1953 for his novella, The Old Man and the Sea. His writing career began on his high school newspaper, Trapeze and Tabula, and his interest in journalism continued after graduation when he took a job as a reporter at the Kansas City Star. In 1918, 19-year-old Ernest served as an ambulance driver for the Red Cross in Italy but was subsequently injured in an explosion. He convalesced in a hospital in Milan and started a flirting relationship with a nurse named Agnes. This brief romance, along with his experience as an ambulance driver in WWI, served as the source material for his third novel, A Farewell to Arms. Back in Chicago, Ernest took a job writing for the Toronto Star and met his first wife, Hadley Richardson. The couple soon joined a growing number of literary expatriates - like F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald, and Ezra Pound - who relocated to Paris after the war. They were a part of the Lost Generation. While in Paris, Ernest and Hadley traveled with their friends frequently to Spain to watch the bull fights, thus giving him source material for his first published novel, The Sun Also Rises. Ernest and Hadley had one son, but the couple did not last on account of Ernest’s affair with Pauline Pfeiffer. -

Metaphorical Illness in Hemingway's Works Abstract Hemingway, through his characters, illustrates the many different genres and functions of disease. More than just inflictors of sadness and pain, disease and injury are part of the human condition. They are undeniable truths that give life to humanity, Hemingway’s characters, and Hemingway himself. As Hemingway writes in Death in the Afternoon, “…all stories, if continued far enough, end in death, and he is no true storyteller who would keep that from you.” Part of Hemingway’s art is acknowledging that there is no true cure. Vitality and death, contentedness and pain, disease and survival all coexist in Hemingway’s writing as one: life. MARTHA GELLHORN AND ERNEST HEMINGWAY: A LITERARY RELATIONSHIP H. L. Neal Tate, Dean of the Robert B. Toulouse School of Graduate Studies Salmon, H. L., Martha Gellhorn and Ernest Hemingway: A Literary Relationship, Master of Arts (English). May 2003. 55 pp. Martha Gellhorn and Ernest Hemingway met in Key West in 1937, married in 1941, and divorced in 1945. Gellhorn’s work exhibits a strong influence from Hemingway’s work, including collaboration on her work during their marriage. I will discuss three of her six novels: WMP (1934), Liana (1944), and Point of No Return (1948). The areas of influence that I will rely on in many ways follow the stages Harold Bloom outlines in Anxiety of Influence. Gellhorn’s work exposes a stage of influence that Bloom does not describe—which I term collaborative. By looking at Hemingway’s influence in Gellhorn’s writing the difference between traditional literary influence and collaborative influence can be compared and analyzed, revealing the footprints left in a work by a collaborating author as opposed to simply an influential one.
