They’re hurting. And in a way, they’re scrambling. Nothing a visit from the reeling Buffalo Sabres can’t fix. Sidney Crosby picked up his 13th goal of the season, Tristan Jarry stopped 26 shots and the Penguins extended Buffalo’s winless streak to 15 games with a 5-2 victory on Wednesday night. Evan Rodrigues, Kris Letang, John Marino and Zach Aston-Reese scored also for the Penguins, who recovered from a sluggish three-game set against New Jersey in which they managed just one victory by pouncing on the undermanned and overmatched Sabres. “We’re a close group, a very resilient group,” Marino said. “We’ve had a lot of come-from-behind wins, a lot of bounce-back wins (like tonight). It says a lot about the guys in the room.” Buffalo goalie Dustin Tokarski, making his first NHL start in more than five years with Carter Hutton out due to a lower-body injury, finished with 37 saves and kept the Sabres in it until late in the second period, when Marino and Aston-Reese scored just over 2 minutes apart to give the Penguins all the cushion required. Rasmus Dahlin scored his second goal of the season and Victor Olofsson beat Jarry on a penalty shot in the third period, but the NHL’s worst team remained in a tailspin.

Besides my column in The Hockey News’ Ultimate Pool Guide, and my contributions to this year’s Score Forecaster (fifth year doing each), I put an ad in McKeen’s. That covers the big three hockey pool magazines and you should have at least one of them as part of your draft prep. The other thing you need, of course, is this Guide right here. It is not only updated throughout the summer, but I also make sure that the features/tidbits found in here are unique. I know what’s in the print mags and I have always tried to set this Guide apart from them. Once again, this is an automatic download – just pick it up in your downloads section. Look for one or two updates in August, then one or two updates between September 1st and 14th. After that, when training camp is in full swing, I will be updating every two or three days right into October. Make sure you download the latest prior to heading into your draft (and don’t ask me on one day if I’ll be updating the next day – I get so many of those that I am unable to answer them all, just download as late as you can). Afternoon Matchup: After suffering a 3-1 loss on Friday night, the San Jose Barracuda look to get back on track as the Tucson Roadrunners make their first ever trip to SAP Center. After winning four-straight games from Dec. 20 to Dec. 28, the Roadrunners have now lost three straight including a 3-2 overtime loss to the Stockton Heat on Friday. Special Group: The San Jose Barracuda killed off both Milwaukee power-play tries on Friday night and still sit atop the AHL on the penalty kill (87.9%). The Barracuda also rank within the top five in the league on the power play. On Wednesday, the Barracuda matched a season high with three power-play tallies and went 1-for-2 on Friday. San Jose is ranked third in the AHL on the man advantage (27.2%). All-Star Nods: On Thursday the AHL announced that Barracuda Goaltender Troy Grosenick and rookie Forward Danny O’Regan had been named to the 2017 All-Star game, which will take place in Lehigh Valley at the end of the month. Grosenick is having a career campaign in his fourth season as a pro, posting a 9-6-1 record in 20 games played. The Brookfield, WI, native leads the AHL in shutouts (5), is T-14th in wins, fourth in save percentage (.928) and fifth in goals-against average (2.12).

NAMING RIGHTS: Last year the county signed a $3.5 M 10-year naming-rights contract with the Times Union which will expire in 2016. Furthermore, the county is seeking a private management group to run the arena. Two firms solicited proposals last year, Philadelphia-based SMG and the B-Sens, but the county legislature defeated a proposal that would have either running the facilities.
