Whether Mary was pure from the very moment of her conception, and how this could be so, or whether she was sanctified a moment after conception, a distinction which may appear trivial to the modern mind, was a question which provoked virulent argument, royal decrees and even excommunication or exile for opponents in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. At first sight it may appear strange to examine the fifteenth-century manifestations of the debate about the Immaculate Conception, when the dogma was not defined until the nineteenth century. In 1854, the doctrine became a dogma necessary to salvation. 2 The doctrine was discussed before the date of its definition as dogma. It is immediately apparent from the general tenor of the papal definition that an unusually firm reliance was placd on tradition, as opposed to scriptural proof. This reliance provides a justification, should justification be needed, for the study of the dvelopment of iininaculist tradition and its expression in literature in the fifteenth century. Moreover, reflecting on the inferences of the 'marée montante' image described by René Laurentin, a present-day mariologist, a second more important justification emerges: Cornme les vagues se soulèvent, culminent, puis s'étalent et ref luent jusqu'à ce que la suivante porte plus loin son élan, ainsi chaque période préssent quelque aspect cache du visage de la Vierge, le découvre avec ferveur non sans excès parfois, et souvent non sans lutte.4 Dogma is defined only after each doctrine has arisen, been debated and been accepted. (Paris: Lethielleux, 1967), p.15. 6 scholastic teachers, but the fifteenth century saw impassioned debate and violent reprisals against opponents. Debate was rife in the Peninsula at the end of the fourteenth century and in the early fifteenth century. In the Peninsula itself, at the turn of the century, the Catalan monarchy was particularly active in the promulgation of decrees, demanding loyalty to the doctrine as a prerequisite of loyalty t the state; edicts were promulgated by Juan I, Martin I and Dofia Maria de Aragón.

    CMS MEMORY IN THE MIDDLE AGES APPROACHES FROM SOUTHWESTERN EUROPE Memory was vital to the functioning of the medieval world. People in medieval societies shared an identity based on commonly held memo- MEMORY IN THE MIDDLE AGES THE MIDDLE IN MEMORY ries. Religions, rulers, and even cities and nations justifi ed their exis- tence and their status through stories that guaranteed their deep and unbroken historical roots. The studies in this interdisciplinary collec- tion explore how manifestations of memory can be used by historians as a prism through which to illuminate European medieval thought and value systems.The contributors have drawn a link between memory and medieval science, management of power and remembrance of the dead ancestors through examples from southern Europe as a means and Studies CARMEN Monographs of enriching and complicating our study of the Middle Ages; this is a region with a large amount of documentation but which to date has not been widely studied. Finally, the contributors have researched the role of memory as a means to sustain identity and ideology from the past to the present. This book has two companion volumes, dealing with ideology and identity as part of a larger project that seeks to map and interrogate the signifi cance of all three concepts in the Middle Ages in the West. CARMEN Monographs and Studies seeks to explore the movements of people, ideas, religions and objects in the medieval period. It welcomes publications that deal with the migration of people and artefacts in the Middle Ages, the adoption of Christianity in northern, Baltic, and east- MEMORY IN central Europe, and early Islam and its expansion through the Umayyad caliphate.

[0212-0267 (2012) 31; 135-163] RESUMEN: En este artículo se realiza una aproximación al pensamiento del fran- ciscano Francesc Eiximenis (c. 1330-1409), uno de los autores más destacados de la Corona de Aragón. Situado en el tránsito de la Edad Media al Renacimiento, su uni- verso mental comparte aspectos de ambos mundos. Si doctrinalmente responde a los cánones del Medioevo, desde un punto de vista social —al reclamar el papel de la burguesía— plantea una economía de signo precapitalista. Desde un punto de vista pedagógico, y en un sentido amplio, se puede considerar a Eiximenis como un inte- lectual preocupado por el fomento de la vida urbana, el protagonismo de la vida activa a través del cultivo de las artes mecánicas, la expansión del saber como un método eficaz para luchar contra la ignorancia, el desarrollo de la lectura como ins- trumento para mejorar el gobierno de las ciudades y la extensión de la cortesía como un modo de atemperar los males causados por el pecado, en especial, la gula. LAWRANCE Magdalen College, Oxford 1 Retelling a series of anecdotes about the ‘vicios, tachas e malas condiciones’ of women, mostly borrowed, the Archpriest of Talavera counters the objection that his work may be a temptation to further female infamy by pointing out that women already know all there is to be known on the subject of sex. They learn it, he explains, from books by Boccaccio and others of his ilk: Todas estas cosas [de Bocacio] fallareys en los cofres de las mugeres: oras de Santa Maria, syete salmos, estorias de santos, salterio de romance, ¡nin verle del ojo! Pero canciones, dezires, coplas, cartas de enamoradas, e muchas otras locuras, esto sy.1 The passage implies that by 1438, when the Archpriest was writing, a collection of books, albeit small enough to fit in a cofre with a collection of cosmetics, was a commonplace article of furniture in a lady’s bedchamber. It also assumes that ladies were capable of reading their books. A respectable matron might be expected to have a library of devotional works—Books of Hours, the Seven Penitential Psalms, saints’ lives and vernacular translations of the psaltery—but the Archpriest claims, tendentiously, that these were usually supplanted by a secret hoard of erotic and romantic trifles. Boccaccio, the fifteenth-century Mills and Boon? The little vignette of books in the bedroom mirrors a facet of one of the striking features of late medieval culture: a gradual spread of literacy and private libraries amongst the non-professional laity which culminated in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries in the rise of a new reading public.

Buscando las raíces de esta caracterización, encontramos dos pensadores franciscanos, el beato Ramon Llull y fray Francesc Eiximenis, representando estas tendencias. ABSTRACT Romantic Philosophy characterizes the way of being Catalan with two main words: seny, com- mon sense, and rauxa, or rapture. LOCOS Y RACIONALISTAS Suele creerse, porque así se define a sí mismo, que el beato Ramon Llull era un foll, un loco. También es común considerar a fray Francesc Eiximenis su antagonista, el máximo representante de lo que se ha llamado el seny catalán, con permiso de san Ramon de Penya- fort.1 Sin embargo, este encasillamiento, aunque útil, suele esconder más problemas que solu- ciones. La taxonomía acostumbra a ser ventajosa en el campo de las ciencias naturales, pero es especialmente oscura en las ciencias del espíritu. Leamos un ejemplo: «¿No es verdad que los mallorquines son superiores a los barceloneses en sutileza de espíritu y agudeza de inge- nio?» —dice un gerundense como Eiximenis, torturador de cuerpos y almas.2 Se ha querido asociar, también, ambos conceptos a lo más intrínseco del espíritu catalán, aquél que se ha querido enraizar en Llull y Eiximenis.
