The battle for the 2008-09 WCHA regular season championship will again consist of a 28-game schedule for each of the league’s eight clubs, with each team playing the other seven four times – twice at home and twice on the road. During the course of the season, there will be a total of eight weekends that will consist of all eight member teams engaged in WCHA play. They are Oct. 16-18, Dec. 11-13, Jan. 15-17, Jan. 22-23, Jan. 29-31, Feb. 5-8, Feb. 12-13 and Feb. 19-20. The league schedule concludes Feb. 20. The WCHA family will watch the 2010 Winter Olympics with great pride, knowing that many familiar faces will dot various Olympic team rosters. MADISON, Wis. – Defending national champion University of Wisconsin is without its head coach and many familiar faces, but the Badgers are still the preseason pick to win the Western Collegiate Hockey Association women’s title, according to a poll of league-member head coaches. The Badgers collected six first place votes and 48 total points in the poll of the eight head coaches and edged out defending WCHA regular season champion University of Minnesota, which placed second with 43 points and two first place votes. The University of Minnesota Duluth, with 2010 WCHA FINAL FACE-OFF 38 points, was selected to finish third. • The Badgers go on its first road trip of the season, visiting conference foe Bemidji State. On Oct. 10 the Badgers head to Coleraine, Minn. for the first game of the series to face the Beavers at the Hodgins-Berardo Arena at 7 p.m. The series continues on Oct. 11 when both teams travel to Bemidji, Minn. to battle at the John Glas Fieldhouse at 4 p.m. • After dropping the 2009 national championship banner, the Wisconsin women’s hockey team fell 2-0 to league-rival North Dakota in the season- opener at the Kohl Center on Oct. 2. In front of a crowd of 2,590 the Badgers unveiled its third championship banner before the drop of the puck on the 2009-10 season. • The freshmen proved essential in the Badgers’ 3-0 win over North Dakota last Saturday at the Kohl Center. In just their second game donning Cardinal and White, two freshmen accounted for all three goals, Brianna Decker had two and Lauren Unser had one. • In her first collegiate start, Becca Ruegsegger stopped 18 shots for the shutout. • In the 2-0 loss, Wisconsin suffered its first shutout and fell to 8-3 in season openers since its inception in 1999. The loss marks the first-ever against the Fighting Sioux, bringing the all-time record to 25-1-0. The loss was the first shutout to start a season in program history and the first at the Kohl Center since Nov. 24, 2006 against Minnesota Duluth. • Brianna Decker had Wisconsin’s first goal of the season, also marking her first multi-goal game as she lit the lamp twice in UW’s 3-0 win. • Lauren Unser scored for Wisconsin in just her second shift as a Badger and Ruegsegger had 18 saves to shut out the Fighting Sioux in her first collegiate start. The last Badger to earn a shutout in her first collegiate start was current senior Alannah McCready against Union College on Sept. 29, 2007. • Jasmine Giles had two assists and Maria Evans had one assist as the only upperclassmen to contribute in the scoring effort against the Fighting Sioux. • Even though the Badgers have lost their head coach and some key players from its championship season, the Badgers first NCAA title came during an Olympic year in 2006. Interim head coach Tracey DeKeyser is no stranger to the program, she has been with UW since its inception and has been at the helm of the program twice before as a co-coach with former assistant Dan Koch. DeKeyser will enlist in the help of UW alums, Peter Johnson and Jackie Friesen, to assist the Badgers in the 2009-10 season. • This week’s opponent, Bemidji State (0-2) was picked to finish eighth in the WCHA preseason coaches’ poll. Last season the Beavers went 2-22-3 in WCHA play. BSU enters the weekend after a 0-2 series with Mercyhurst. In the first of the series, Mercyhurst downed the Beavers 4-1 and capped off the series with a 6-1 win Saturday night. Sophomore Erin Johnson scored both goals for Bemidji during their opening series against Mercyhurst. All-WCHA Second Team selection,sophomore Zuzana Tomcikova, was in goal for the Beavers during last Friday night’s 4-1 defeat and sophomore Alana McElhinney was in the net during Saturday’s 6-1 loss. All- time, the Badgers lead the Beavers 41-1-2. Wisconsin saw its only loss to Bemidji on Dec. 9, 2001. Last season the Badgers shut out the Beavers in three of the four meetings, outscoring Bemidji State 21-2. • Alannah McCready played in net in the third period in the first-ever U.S. Women’s Hockey Hall of Fame Game in Eveleth, Minn. • The Badgers, the defending national champions are the coaches’ preseason pick to win the WCHA women’s title.The Badgers collected six first-place votes and 48 points in a poll of the eight coaches and edged out defending WCHA champion Minnesota, which placed second with 43 points and two first-place votes.
