REMOVING (Remixed) | Noé Soulier

WHEN: October 14 | 6:30PM-8PM WHERE: Atlanta Contemporary (535 Means St NW Atlanta, GA 30318)

France-Atlanta 2016 will welcome French dancer and choreographer Noé Soulier for his U.S. debut. Noé Soulier will present a remixed version of his 2015 signature piece, “Removing” at the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center on October 14 at 6:30 p.m. He will also give an outdoor performance at ELEVATE 2016 on October 15 at 5:00 p.m. in downtown Atlanta.

Considered one of the most innovative artists in his field, Noé Soulier’s experimental and intellectual approach aims to leave the viewer with a sense of intrigue. As an artist, he explores people’s perception and interpretation of gestures through various media: choreography, installations, theoretical work and performances.

In Removing (Remixed), Soulier finds inspiration from Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, exploring actions motivated by a practical purpose such as hitting, avoiding or reaching. Unlike movements determined geometrically or mechanically, dancers share a vocabulary of gestures with the audience. The result is a fascinating composition interlaced with organized solos and duos. Noé Soulier is affiliated with the Centre National de la Danse (CND) in Paris and was recently appointed Artistic Director of the Centre National de la Chorégraphie in Toulouse, France.

***

About Noé Soulier Born in Paris in 1987, Noé Soulier earned a Master’s degree in Philosophy at the Sorbonne and studied at the Paris Conservatoire, the National Ballet School of Canada, and PARTS in Brussels. As an artist, he explores people’s perception and interpretation of gestures through various media: choreography, installations, theoretical work and performances. In Mouvement sur Mouvement (2013) and Signe blanc (2012), he created a time lag between speech and gesture in order to examine their interaction in the development of understanding. In Petites perceptions (2010) and Corps de ballet (2014), the focus is on the intent and the dancer’s movement, and aims to identify the way the performer initiates the action, thus exploring the complex relationship between intent, action and meaning through body language and speech. In the fall of 2014, Soulier performed Movement Materials for the inauguration of the Fondation Vuitton in Paris and in 2015, showcased Removing around Europe (France, Germany, Finland, Poland, the UK, Austria). Noé Soulier is affiliated with the Centre National de la Danse (CND), an institution

located in Paris and sponsored by the French Ministry of Culture. Culture

ELEVATE 2016 Hosted seasonally in downtown Atlanta by the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs, ELEVATE is a temporary public art program that seeks to activate the downtown Atlanta area through visual art, performances, and cultural events. Humanitarian work in French-speaking countries

WHEN: October 12-21 WHERE: Metro Atlanta schools

With over 220 million French speakers worldwide on the 5 continents, it should come as no surprise that French is one of the major languages used in humanitarian and development work around the world.

For this education series, students of French from Metro Atlanta high schools and universities will have the opportunity to hear from humanitarian and development workers from some of Atlanta’s most prominent Non-Government Organizations.

Representatives from the Carter Center, Peace Corps, CARE, and the Centers for Disease Control will share about their work in the field, addressing some of the world’s most pressing humanitarian issues, and how the French language can be used in a professional setting.

Students will be able to ask questions from the experts and develop a greater understanding of how these NGOs serve some of the world’s most vulnerable populations. They will also discover the value of speaking foreign languages in a professional setting.
