We first reconstructed the phylogeny of the genus Rediviva using seven genes and inferred Trait evolution an origin of Rediviva at around 29 MYA (95% HPD = 19.2–40.5), concurrent with the origin and radiation of the Melittidae Succulent Karoo flora. -

Pathways Toward Planetary Health Half-Earth, Ecological Civilization, Regenerative Economics, and Pervasive Altruism SYMPOSIUM, APRIL 17-19, 2018 On April 17-19, 2018, the Garrison Institute convened a symposium–Pathways Towards Planetary Health: Half-Earth, Ecological Civilization, Regenerative Economics, and Pervasive Altruism–to explore the intersection of these four emerging ideas, and to find their convergence and the indications of the pathway forward towards planetary health. The symposium underlined the need for an ethical framework that views planetary health through the lens of four integrated, mutually-supportive components: Half-Earth, Ecological Civilization, a regenerative economic system to promote and realize their development, and an altruistic world view as the generative field which makes possible their development. Vincent Stanley of Patagonia discussed how companies can become part of the regenerative economy. 1 Top row: Chris Heltne of the Half-Earth Project talks about the planet’s biodiversity crisis. Dr. Monica Sharma, formerly of the United Nations Development Programme, describes how a system’s underlying values determine its outcome. Melissa Nelson of San Francisco State University describes the human capacity to align with nature. The symposium built upon the Garrison Institute’s Climate, Mind and Behavior Project, which explored the nature of the mind and the patterns of behaviors the mind gives rise to, to enhance our capacity to generate climate-change solutions. The world is being reshaped by sweeping, human-caused mega-trends: climate change, massive extinction- level biodiversity loss, desertification, population growth, urbanization, and income inequality. -

For bedding plants thick foliage and rich in blooming are traditionally appreciated. However, plants with modest growth habit may form a very decorative group if planted in great numbers. Therefore, to determine the suitability of a species for bedding purposes, not only single plant should be evaluated. Data collected during several years from the experimental collection of many ornamental bedding plants form the basis of this research. All species were planted in groups, with minimum 30 plants in each. The evaluations of decorative properties of species were analysed per group. In addition to height, number and diameter of flowers, thickness of a plant group were considered as an important property. Thickness was characterized by the vertical distribution of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) in a plant group. New aspects to be followed in choosing species suitable for bedding plants and some methods to be used in comparing new bedding plants are discussed. 1. Introduction The breeders of new ornamentals often face the question if the new product corresponds to consumer requirements. To bring a new floricultural crop to the market, thorough research and breeding work is needed. By the time the results are available the trend can be over and the crop in the phase of decline in its life cycle (Vonk Noordegraaf, 1998). -

An HSUS Report: The Impact of Animal Agriculture on Global Warming and Climate Change Abstract The farm animal production sector is the single largest anthropogenic user of land, contributing to soil degradation, dwindling water supplies, and air pollution, in addition to detrimentally impacting rural and urban communities, public health, and animal welfare. The breadth of this sector’s global impacts has been largely underestimated and underappreciated. Indeed, meat, egg, and milk production are not narrowly focused on the direct rearing and slaughtering of farm animals. Rather, the animal agriculture sector encompasses grain and fertilizer production, substantial water use, and significant energy expenditures to transport feed, farm animals, and finished meat, egg, and dairy products. Animal agriculture’s greatest environmental influence may be its contributions to global warming and climate change. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations (UN), the animal agriculture sector is responsible for 18%, or nearly one-fifth, of human-induced greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, greater than the share contributed by the transportation sector. In nearly every step of meat, egg, and dairy production, climate-changing gases are released into the atmosphere, disrupting weather, temperature, and ecosystem health. Mitigating and preventing these serious problems requires immediate and far-reaching changes in current animal agriculture practices and consumption patterns. Global Warming and Climate Change Global warming refers to an increase in average global temperatures, which in turn causes climate change, such as changes in seasonal temperatures and wind velocity, and the amount of precipitation and humidity for a given area or region. 1 Climate change can involve either cooling or warming. -

Forests NOW in the Fight Against Climate Change Forest Foresight Report 1.v4 November 2008 1 This Report is intended as a guide for non-specialist stakeholders addressing deforestation and climate change within Governments, the Forests NOW in private sector, and the media. This is the fourth edition of this report, originally published in May 2007. This updated edition summarises scientific knowledge of the world’s tropical forests, the full range of the Fight Against ecosystem services they provide to humanity, and their critical role in maintaining a stable climate, as well as detailing potential solutions to reduce deforestation. Climate Change The Global Canopy Programme (GCP) is an alliance of 37 scientific institutions in 19 countries, which lead the world in research, education and conservation in forest canopies. Our work programmes The World’s Tropical Forests 6 aim to define and explore the economic value of forest ecosystem services and their role in mitigating climate change. We share these Are we Creating Wealth that’s Worth Having? 8 findings with politicians, policy makers, and financiers around the world so that they can be applied in efforts to halt global warming. As deforestation proceeds apace, sustainable development policies and Tropical Forests and Climate Change 10 positive incentive mechanisms based on sound science must urgently be developed to preserve tropical forests, which act as vital utilities Deforestation: Global Demand versus International Regulation 12 for humanity. Forests NOW is an independent global network of governments, Ecosystem Services: Beyond Carbon 14 organisations, and individuals concerned with forests and climate change, which is co-ordinated by the Global Canopy Programme. -

Right now the eyes of the world are on Bali, as we prepare to face what promises to be the most significant environmental, social and economic issue of our time – climate change. And more than ever, forests are high on the agenda of any discussion around climate change, both as a source of emissions and as a strategy for adaptation. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), land conversion and deforestation in developing countries emits around 1.7 billion tonnes of carbon annually, the fourth highest cause of global emissions. In Indonesia alone, an estimated 1.8 million hectares of forests have been disappearing each year, or about 2 percent of forest cover. Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation (REDD) Forest is now under intense discussion as a mitigation strategy to be included in a Day successor to the Kyoto Protocol. -

Although I anticipate producing a publishable version of this classification at a future date, my near- term goal is to produce a web-accessible version, which will be available to the public and which will be updated regularly through input from systematists familiar with taxa within the Lamiales. Miralles-Wilhelm National Hispanic Heritage Month is a period from September 15 to October 15 in the United States for recognizing the contributions and influence of Hispanic Americans to the history, culture, and achievements of the United States. Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. President Lyndon Johnson started observing Hispanic Heritage Week in 1968 and President Ronald Reagan expanded it to cover a 30-day period beginning in 1988. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988, on the approval of Public Law 100-402. But why those dates? The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18, respectively. Also, Columbus Day or Día de la Raza, which is October 12, falls within this 30 day period. I am proud of my Hispanic roots and have realized how they have given me a particular perspective in the different leadership positions I have held during my career, and how they may shape my role as Dean of Mason’s College of Science. In my introductory Q&A interview when coming to Mason, I was asked “Why is diversity particularly important in learning and research within Mason’s College of Science?” I replied that diversity is something that is incredibly important to me.
