  • Book Reviews & Bibliographical References to Welsh Mines & Mining
Welsh Mines Society (Member of the National Association of Mining History Organisations) NEWSLETTER 44 April 2001 Editorial Thoughts 1. Many thanks for all the material sent in, the volume appears to increase with the passing of each Newsletter. Due to a severe shortage of my spare time in recent months, caused by work ‘commitments’, several articles (some quite substantial) have been held over to the next Newsletter to reduce editing time, I have however tried to include any time dependent information. In spite of this, the Newsletter is still unacceptably late, and for this I offer my apologies. Our Society has been lucky in that the Foot & Mouth crisis hasn’t caused the cancellation of any of our meets this year - many organisations in the UK haven’t faired quite so well. ADRODDIAD BLYNYDDOL / ANNUAL REPORT 1981-82 MAXWELL FRASER BEQUEST & TREFIN ARCHDDERWYDD CYMRU BEQUEST 1982001 Ffynhonnell / Source The late Maxwell Fraser (Mrs Edgar Phillips), Slough, Berkshire. Blwyddyn / Year Adroddiad Blynyddol / Annual Report 1981-82 Disgrifiad / Description A brief description of this bequest appeared in last year's Annual Report. It consists of the manuscripts and papers of Maxwell Fraser (1902-80), authoress and travel writer, and of her husband, Edgar Phillips (`Trefin', 1889-1962), to be known at the testator's request as the `Maxwell Fraser Bequest' and the `Trefin Archdderwydd Cymru Bequest'. The `Maxwell Fraser Bequest' is by far the larger group and contains correspondence ; diaries with detailed entries, 1933-80, and a journal of a tour of Poland in 1930; drafts and typescripts of books, articles, and broadcast scripts; notes and material relating to the testator's researches in connection with these works including a large group relating to Lord and Lady Llanover and the Hall family ; circulars, newsletters and correspondence relating to the many societies of which the testator was a member (the Cambrian Archaeological Association, the International Arthurian Society, Kilvert Society, Offa's Dyke Association, P.E.N., Sherlock Holmes Society of London and other societies which reflect her interest in literature, history and archaeology, music and Celtic matters). There is a substantial amount of correspondence (letters received and copies of replies), much of it connected with the preparation of the testator's many books, articles and guides, and with her work preparing publicity material for the Great Western Railway and British Railways (Western Region) (including Holiday Haunts, 1929-62).

  • Ceredigion (Vc46) Rare Plant Register
CEREDIGION (VC46) RARE PLANT REGISTER 1. Vascular Plants and Stoneworts A O Chater February 2001 INTRODUCTION The present edition of this Register updates the last one of April 1997, and includes two major changes in format. Only records since 1970, rather than 1950, are now included, and in the Appendix all natives believed to have become extinct since 1800, rather than 1950, are given and all their sites are listed. The history of the Register from its inception in 1978 by D Glyn Jones (then the NCC’s Assistant Regional Officer in Ceredigion) and A O Chater (BSBI County Recorder) has been related in previous editions. The original format, refined chiefly by A D Fox and A P Fowles, was extensively revised for the 1995 edition by A D Hale (CCW’s Area Ecologist). This Register is now complemented by one for bryophytes (Hale 2001). Data sorting and formatting were carried out by A D Hale using the ‘Excel’ computer spreadsheet package. The data are retained in this package to facilitate updating for future editions. The spreadsheet can also be used in a limited way as a ‘searchable’ database, and the data can be sorted in various ways other than by species name (eg by site name or site status). Consideration was given to using the species recording database package Recorder, but Excel was preferred in this instance for presentational reasons as the main aim was to produce an easily accessible and disseminable hard- copy version. The Register has also been put onto the Mapinfo GIS held by CCW, and it is hoped that the site details presented on the GIS will soon be further refined.

  • Cwmsymlog Mine Case Study
June 2016 Abandoned Mine Case Study: Cwmsymlog Silver & Lead Mine Cwmsymlog mine lies 12km northeast of Aberystwyth, Ceredigion. The mine workings extend for approximately 1km down the narrow Symlog valley from its head near the shore of Llyn Pendam. The Nant Symlog flows westerly through the site before joining the Nant Erfyn at Pen-bont Rhydybeddau, forming the Nant Silo. The Nant Silo continues westerly to join the Afon Stewi at Penrhyn-coch, forming the Afon Clarach. Cwmsymlog is one of the most important mines in Mid-Wales having been one of the key silver-producers of the area, along with the nearby Daren, Cwmerfyn, Bwlch and Goginan mines. The date of the first workings at Cwmsymlog are uncertain, but there are historic records dating back to the 16th century. The greatest period of activity began in the 1620s under Sir Hugh Myddleton, from which time the mine was in almost continuous operation until its closure in 1901. Much of the site is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) due to its considerable importance for rare species of lichen and fern. There are also two areas that have been designated as Scheduled Ancient Monuments (SAM), and in 2007 the 1855 Cornish Chimney was restored by the Spirit of the Miners project. In the late 1970s concerns were raised regarding the impact of wind-blown particles from the extensive tailings tips on local people and livestock. Investigations found a marked movement of lead-rich dust nearly 2km westwards from the mine. In order to counter these problems the large tailings tips adjacent to the Nant Symlog were reclaimed by Ceredigion District Council and the Welsh Office in 1981.
